But now you’re more in and analyzing and digesting another kinds of music. I’m a Spanish black male and rock music lover so for me was a real challenge 45 years ago. Thompson and Phil Collins were together since the earliest 80’s so they know each others and the Genesis/ Collins music. Keep it up 🎉🎉🎉🎉 And you’ll see how you music 🎶 world will rich every day

There is a story behind this drum duet: Genesis was on tour and they were sitting in the hotel room just before the concert. Phil and Chester sitting on chairs the other way around and opposite of each other. One of them then started drumming on the back side of the chair. The other one then took over. After a few minutes both were in sync. The whole duet was about 30 minutes. They used to play different parts of the 30min when they were on tour. Amazing

Mind bending. I have not seen this particular performance. So intricate, this is beyond comprehension. Every tour has a different drum duet. The two of them played together in Genesis for 40 yrs. and their unison, precision is staggering. I had the great pleasure of witnessing their duet live in 1978 and it made me a Genesis fan for life. At first it was "what the hell?", then it was "wait, what are you doing?", then it became mesmerizing, followed by an explosion of appreciation of the greatness on display by the audience. The two of them stole the best concert I have ever heard. Blessed. ps Often this duet would move seamlessly into 'Los Endos' and stunningly blew everyone's mind. This band could give you live music as no other!

I think I was about 15 when this tour came to town. As a young drummer, I was HUGE Phil Collins and Genesis fan. After the show I came home and was talking to my dad about the show and how I wished I could tell Chester what an inspiration he was to me and he just said "why don't you call him"? And I was like, "What? How?" And he said that there were really only 3 or 4 hotels in the city where the band could be staying and suggested I call them and ask for his room. The second hotel I called (The Ritz Carton) was where he was and they put me through to his room! I was in a state of shock and a little flabbergasted but managed to tell him that I loved his play and he was a big inspiration and all that stuff and he was super nice. We chatted for about 10 minutes. He gave me some practicing tips and other advice and then he said he had to go to bed because they were leaving town early the next morning. Thanks again Chester!

The drum duets go back to the early ‘80s and are so cool to watch…thankfully they’re on KZbin…there’s a video that shows how they threw this one duet together in a room backstage using a bar stool with each guy drumming on the metal frame while facing each other and they give each other non verbal cues to mark where they go next in the duet… and then they went on stage and performed it as if they’ve done it hundreds of times.. it’s like a question/answer type of solo where Phil plays a snippet and Chester replies with his answer…and they continue to go back and forth while stopping at the same time on purpose as they move along to the big finale…Genius drumming👌👍✌️🎤🔥🥁

Genesis drum duets actually go back to the 1976 Trick tour with Bill Bruford and Phil, although very short that year. When Chester joined the Live Genesis band in 1977, they did the Dance on a Volcano/drum duet/Los Endos on every tour through 1982. Then they started dropping Volcano and it would be drum duet/Los Endos. I saw Phil and Chester do drum duets at 14 live concerts (4 Phil concerts).

Sadly Phil Collins can no longer play drums. During a 2007 tour with his former band mates from Genesis he injured his neck. That amazing drum break three-plus minutes into "In the Air Tonight" was the result of a recording studio accident (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpqrZZ-kq7Zno9E) and it changed recording history. *But* you can't duplicate that studio technique on stage in a live performance. To get the impact there, you have to have two phenomenal drummers playing in perfect unison. And in this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqWViXlorrSdaZY) you can see that this what is happening, Phil Collins and Chester Thompson playing in unison. You can't talk about Phil Collins without talking about Chester Thompson. They belong in the same sentence.

Not a song, but a drum duet PERFORMANCE that Phil and Chester worked out by a lot of playing. Alot of it was probably improvised initially as they just play off each other and vary the timing, the groove and so forth. Chester drummed with live Genesis and for Phil's solo band tours as the 2nd drummer from 1977 to 2007. 30 years of drumming together. They did drum duets at every live performance for 30 years, each tour would vary a bit. They have very similar styles of drumming and thus they had chemistry and played in sync with each other so well. Notice Phil is a left handed drummer and Chester is a right handed drummer, so their drum kit set ups were mirror images of each other. I was fortunate to see Genesis live 10 times, and Phil solo band tours 4 times, so I got to see these great drummers play 14 times together. Always a highlight of every show were these planned duets. Phil chose Chester to play with Genesis live as the 2nd drummer after he heard Chester drumming on Weather Report Black Market album and on Frank Zappa's Live at the Roxy album. Phil liked his jazz fusiony swing, which Phil also had. If you haven't yet, DRUM DUET/LOS ENDOS from GENESIS LIVE AT WEMBLEY, 1987 TOUR ON VIDEO. AWESOME PERFORMANCE.

Phil is, IMHO the greatest Rock/Fusion Drummer of all time. I suppose the there are some Neal Peart fans out there that would disagree, but all you have to do is listen to the Brand X "Product" album, and you will need to re-adjust, and if THAT does not do it for you, then Genesis "Selling England By The Pound" (album) will seal the deal. All his earlier stuff excuses all his later Pop sell-out music. POLO, you don't need to react this but stick it on the 8-track in the truck and have a listen, it will take you on a JOURNEY my friend. Genesis "Selling England By The Pound", NOT the song, play the whole ALBUM and you will get deep. The peak of OG Genesis w/Peter Gabriel, I have never NOT owned a copy since it came out, it changed my (musical) life.
