Whoah! Where have I been? I didn't know Phil Collins sang Soul Jazz! I loved the Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Woody Herman versions of this old tune. Collins does a great updated arrangement!

Phil Collins should do nothing but this kind of music. I didn’t even know who was singing when I had the Jook Joint CD. I couldn’t believe how fantastic this was and found out it was Phil Collins and was shocked. Best thing he’s EVER DONE. Wore that CD Out.

This just shows the Genius of Quincy Jones. To take the gifts of someone extraordinary like Phil Collins and put him in a completely different genre like an old R&B standard and have him sound incredible. Im not taking anything away from Phil. I love his voice and already by himself, Phil Collins Has got Soul! It just needed Q to put it all together :)

It´s not a R&B standard. This is a Duke Ellington´s classic song.

Collins does a nice job but the real artistry here are those wonderful players and Quincy Jones' extraordinary arrangement of this marvelous Ellington/Strayhorn tune. The changes Jones created are magnificent so I'd like to lobby for priorities if I may. Hundreds of vocalists could have sung this well but Q's arrangement of this brilliantly composed tune is where the real magic manifests. And certainly Collins was very wise to hire Quincy so more power to him.

I love this song! Who on earth was trying to compare Quincy Jones to Kanye West? Only real producers can write music for a Jazz Orchestra for sure! Music today, especially the "Auto Tune" music that young people are dancing to a lot hardly makes sense to me in terms of true enjoyment.

He forgot some words in the 2nd verse, but overall Phil Collins did okay here. Quincy's arranngement was "of its time". A little too "funkified" for my taste, but okay. I suspect that the "worst version ever" to quote Pink Creams (and the comic book guy in the Simpsons) is being sung at a Holiday Inn somewhere. Peace
@lindabarnett37944 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly, he nails this melody line which is a bit tricky. Good job. Could do with a bit less orchestration, the beauty of this song is it's simplicity for me. Still other than the refrain, it's not one to go humming in the bath tub, you know ~
@janedvinsson2 жыл бұрын
That was okay! But don't take the words from me, cause then Coilns doesn't stand a chance...or how was it now...?
@ArthurKaletzky14 жыл бұрын
A great rendition - what in French would be called "une grande reference" of a great jazz (not R&B) standard. Really puts Phil up there as a very good jazz singer . Quincy's orchestration's a thing of beauty but that's not him conducting, is it ? If you want a great female version of this song, try Ella's (slow) or Karrin Allyson's (fast, almost uptempo).

Worst version ever! this song goes best with the big band jazz era. you dont incorporate contemporary jazz instrumentals into the master piece ! Duke Ellington would turn in his grave if he hears this!
@Oldscule629 жыл бұрын
+Pink Creams So in other words, Duke Ellington would have been made at Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones and a few other musical geniuses for taking his work and STILL KEEPING IT RELEVANT instead of in mothballs! STFU Because you don't know jackshyte about Duke Ellington! Quincy Jones created another GREAT CD!!
@jazzedinvegas9 жыл бұрын
+Pink Creams The sign of a truly great composition is it's ability to cross generations & styles both forward and back .. Bravo to Quincy for this arrangement of 20 years ago of a composition from 75 years ago. Whether any one listener considers this to be the worst or the best version is totally irrelevant. The words & the notes tell the story. As Duke would say; "and now you know what jazz is."
