I agree Michael, the Atlantic 75 of this is demo quality So many tracks sound amazing, the slight pause on If Leaving me is easy and the horns on Behind the Lines are amazing In The Air drums and bass wow!

For me, the Steely Dan UHQR Can’t Buy A Thrill was the biggest jump in sonic quality from the originals. But this one is a very close improvement given that it is a non-UHQR. The “discovery” you mention is so true as the LP came alive, especially the two instrumental tracks which I barely noticed before. Nice review Michael

Michael, is the vintage copy you used here made from the mastering done at The Mastering Lab? Look for TML in the dead area. If not, what you have in your old copy is not what Phil Collins preferred at time of release. Back then, Phil had gotten back a few masterings of the album, including the UK version and was not happy. Phil, after noticing records of his own that sounded great were mastered at The Mastering Lab, brought the masters over there and once all was done, he was finally satisfied with the mastering of his great album.

The words “Kills It” is way overused and is a disservice to comparing records More detailed, a modern vibrant forwardness It sounds very nice and you described some of those elements effectively If I was looking at albums I would feel most compelled to upgrade this would be low on the list Bought it and Mingus to check out the ATL 75 45 series early There are redeeming qualities of both pressings Hearing extra detail in an 80s sonic sheen studio pallet isn’t always necessarily a good thing Looking forward to Chad bringing on Selling England By The Pound in November Who knows - the blackcap barons might toss a coin to settle the score

This was a Virgin UK release, if we are talking country of origin, so I'm unclear why you review an American 1st to the Atlantic75 edition. This was a UK production unless I am mistaken.

Indeed you are mistaken. Many albums by UK artists were actually recorded in the US. Some of the work by UK bands such as Supertramp & The Police were also recorded in the US (LA usually), and Phil Collins’ Face Value as well.

Idk, 2 of the 3 studios where tracking took place were in the UK. The bigger question is: where was it subsequently mixed and mastered, and which master is considered the original. As you well know the first cutting was rejected, so I’m really not sure. Please let us know.

*Face Value* is an '80's favorite of mine. I have an original on the Virgin label that I bought in 1980 and it's a good sounding record, but I always thought there should be more dynamics in it to fully flesh out the sound. I don't believe that's possible with a normal length LP at 33 & 1/3. Phil hits his drums very hard and Hugh Padgham captured it oh so well, but that's a difficult sound to preserve. I was disappointed by the Atlantic CD version as well, but Steve Hoffman's remaster on gold CD a few years ago really brought cuts like "Droned/Hand in Hand" & "I Missed Again" roaring to life. I reckon 45 RPM is the reason the new reissue sounds so good.

I have just received my copy of this masterpiece. They have sincerily tried to give us everything that we bargained for. My opinion, it is very dynamic. The percissionist that Phil is, comes better to expression. For some songs I need to adjust the volume, higher or lower. Other songs have a longer ending than the version of 1980. On record 1 you hear a piece of the beginning of the next song on side 2. In those sences I regard this also as a demo. I am happy to own this fresh master without loosing any content

I used to think I was an audiophile, but I realized I care much more about the music than the specific pressing or format. I'll get the best version that I can of the album I like and be happy with that. I just picked up the 2 Genesis Atlantic 75 45rpm that are available so far, not because they're audiophile-grade, but because I believe they are masterpieces and the Atlantic 75 45rpm are the best versions you can get right now. Can't wait for Yes - Close to the Edge, Fragile, Yes ST (gonna pass on 90125) as well as Genesis - Trick of the Tail, Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme. I'm just happy they exist, even if they are kind of expensive imo. Most albums I love most don't get that kind of treatment. Can't even imagine paying for a UHQR of an album that I didn't think was an absolute masterpiece. Anyway, that's just me. I still enjoy your take and your videos :D

The monarch pressing is a mix bag with Michael Reese and George Piros cuts. Phil Collins only approved the TML cut by Michael Reese. What I have heard and read is that the Townhouse cut is a copy cut and mastered differently compared to Michael Reese cut, which also was the master copied to other countries and mastering facilities in UK (which is why there also is a strawberry cut).

Is better sounding bass and lower frequency sounds in remasters vs original pressings a function of modern listening preferences? Meaning that strong bass is a more favorable sound now than when the original was produced such that ‘weaker’ bass in the original was deliberate.

I am just cherry picking from the Atlantic 75 series. A difficult decision for me is whether to go for the Coltrane Favorite Things. On the one hand, It is in my favourite top 5 jazz albums. On the other hand, I already have the ORG Music 45rpm and the 60th anniversary mono/stereo AAA release. Hopefully you will help me decide. Giant Steps is a No-Brainer since it hasn't had anything approaching an audiophile release for a very long time unless you are prepared to lay out ERC level money.

Respecting your opinion and purpose, but spending 90 EUR for such overplayed music and since plenty of good enough sounding pressings are available either in the own collection or on the 2nd hand market or digital is a waste for me personally. That new Atlantic 45 rpm series impo is priced way too high for its content except for 1 or 2 Jazz titles, which may fill some gaps in the collection. Hopefully the pressing quality is 1st class vs. what I have experienced in the last months with QRP.

Not a great Phil Collins fan, but I bought it because on Face values only 3-4 songs are on the weaker side, so it is an ok album for me. Great sound on the 75 reissue I must say (hey and 88€ when I bought it at your shop), but the OG are not sooo far away imho. Gated Reverb on snare (bad bad digital, be aware) was invented by an accident during recording of drums for “Face values” by the way. After this, one had to accept in 90% of all pop & rock (incl hair metal) productions this sound signature from the 80ties (never liked it 😮). No offense, but your videos are trending into info commercials, which I understand of course.

The 45 pressings sound better to you because i think these records are compressed. I’m also not a fan of two or three songs a side. The original always sounded wonderful and if you have a nice clean pressing, there’s no need for this. Sorry Michael to be fare with you, I love original pressings, I’m just not a fan of these new reissues and especially these records pressed on a 45 format.

… my words. I guess the US market will absorb these partially also due to the lower price. I guess the Europeans may be a bit more considerate and pull out their OG or early pressings again or find good quality records in the 2nd hand market for way less money. Sorry, but impo AS is trying to milk a currently recessing market. There are far better ever increasing record buying choices out there.

These 45 RPM are the complete OPPOSITE of compressed you have TWO albums with the same number of songs as ONE second Bellman and Grundman are two of the BEST sound engineers in the world. PERIOD so I think you need to re listen to the 45 because your not hearing the difference. If you doubt what I say then listen to Grundmans reissue of Licomotive Breathe and compare it to ANY other pressing and if you think it’s not better than your system needs upgrading

Michael, I have three pressings of Face Value. Two are US pressings and one UK. One of the US pressings GP@AT (cut by George Piros at Atlantic), the other US pressing has TML-M (cut by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab). The UK pressing has TML-M as well. Can you confirm which US mastering you have, please! I agree 45rpm LPs can sound fantastic, but for me you lose the flow of the music as an entity... the way the artist wanted it to be heard.❤
