Phil (on loan from Genesis) and John were touring with jazz-rockers Brand X when they sat down with us in Santa Monica for some stories and fun on Friday 9/21/79.

I didn't know he had died. Sad. I saw them at the Marquee and also at Ronnie Scott's. Morris Pert was the percussionist. I just remembered that Ramsey Lewis was in the audience at Ronnie's.

Brand X so far ahead of their time! Their debut Album, “Unorthodox Behavior” says it all!! I saw them perform at the Barrel Head in western NY in 1977 and they blew the roof of the place!! Still one of my finest moments of live Jazz/Rock EVER!! What a performance by Goodsall and Colins-!- even Morris Pert was outstanding. Such great memories. 😎🥁

thanks so much for sharing this. I was a huge fan of Brand X all through my teens in the 70s but I didnt and couldn't have had access to any of the clips of all the stuff with brand X with Phil Collins on drums back in the 70s england. Because all we had video wise was The Old Grey Whistle test. And BX hardly ever got on there. Prog and Jazz Rock weren't OGWT or even Radio fodder.

Some fans have laid it on Genesis that Collins didn't stay in Brand X - but he probably would have preferred to stick with them if it hadn't been for his solo career. He kept his hand in the game until around the time Face Value was released.

Nah he did what he wanted. No mysterious force made him do anything.

Collins continued to make great, varied music long after Face Value. It may have been a little harder to find amidst all the pop stuff, but it was there. And live, he was always phenomenal.

Most (ignornant)people underrate Phil as just a Singer. Primary he is a talended drummer in Brand X and (the early) Genenis).

Phil couldn’t sing then and he certainly can’t sing now! He was a fair drummer though.

I totally agree with you Ronald. One of my closest friends and music collaborators cringes every time the name Phil Collins is mentioned. He never gives him a chance based on his awareness of the more pop years with Philip Bailey , 80’s Genesis and even the Tarzan soundtrack. Which to me is great music too, definitely more polished and accesible but good music none the less. Phil was a monster player during those early Genesis years. Having albums like Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Trick of the Tail on your musical resume should definitely show listeners how well rounded of a musician Phil Collins was.

Even on Flaming Youth's lone album he stood out as the best singer in the band.

I'm always amazed to see how unpolished some of these 70s musicians are. Of course, Brand X and John Goodsall didn't make it big, but Phil, of course, was huge in the 80s. Also, I had no idea that Phil had to audition for Brand X. I would have thought it was more just a matter of him finding time. I also have no idea what The Boffomundo Show is.

Yes lots of awkward line of questions. Disco? Grandizing Toto in front of them. How should they respond to that? Releasing a 45 single? Very cringy. Everything has its place but we are talking to Brand X here. Maybe that's why John Goodsall looked disinterested in a lot of the conversation.
