Phil Hartman was one of the greatest improv comedians to have ever lived. He was so much fun to watch whether in an interview, TV or live SNL. This man was an amazing writer and just a great family man as well. So sad his life was cut short in the manner it was.

I love how Phil Hartman’s comic persona, the guy in the suit and tie, was a complete invention: in reality he was a laid-back, t-shirt-and-jeans, pot-smoking hippie surfer dude who designed album covers for rock bands… crazy! He didn’t even become famous until he was forty, either - proof it’s never too late to hit it big with your third, fifth, or eighteenth career.

I've been hearing about Phil Hartman for years now from various people and how he was a genius and all that. Today was my first time actually thinking "you know what? I think it's time to look him up". Didn't even look familiar, but from the get go his cadence, speed, and comic mind really made me be so attentive to what's happening and soak it in. I go into the comments, and I see people saying "what a tragedy" "lost too soon" "I still can't process his loss". Me not knowing anything about him, I google him. Ok death this year, spouse this, kids that... wait, murder-suicide by his deranged wife. I couldn't believe it!! 49 years old?! so young! he was still working and still very much relevant and very much very good! for all these years i had no idea, but now i know...this is truly one of the great tragedies of the comedy world, and to some..it was biggest. RIP Phil

I just think it is quite sad that the entire genius of the man is eclipsed by his deranged wife's murderous rampage. This is like the ultimate win for the woman... Not only has she murdered him but in people's minds, the tragedy completely encompasses what brilliant and awesome joy he brought to us, the common folks watching him... I think the best way to remember Phil Hartman is to deny the woman her win and keep him alive in what he excelled at. I hope Phil and Norm, Super Dave and Chris are having a real blast right now, making all Heavens laugh.

Dave had to be on his game. When you have a witty, intelligent and hilarious guest like Phil Hartman, you had to make sure he didn't end up laughing at you instead of with you. The man was a comedic genius with every character he ever portrayed, completely believable. That man literally made me laugh until I hurt.

THANKS so much, Don!!! I was so very very downhearted when his death was announced on our news in New Zealand. Although I had seen him on SNL only via compilation 'Best Of...' videotapes over here (and film roles) I was a huge devotee of 'News Radio'. What a tremendous loss. One of the biggest natural talents ever!

I never really watched The Simpsons or his run on SNL, but I've been addicted to Don Giller's channel...and man does Phil Hartman have so much life in him. It's just so weird when there's someone who has so much life and then one day they just don't exist. I have no doubt he'd be one of the biggest actors in Hollywood today if only because of his unsupressable charismatic life energy. You can just feel it...and even Hollywood wouldn't need to validate that...it's something only people who love him and fans of his work can validate. I wish I was familiar with his work.
