Yes, this is the state of luthiery and guitar tech work in the modern age. Guitars are cheap and under-perform in some aspects. Meanwhile performance parts to address these issues tend to be expensive. Factor in the cost of professional tools* to ease work flow and inspire confidence in potential clientele that bring you their $400 budget guitars, or their several thousand dollar vintage pieces. What do you get? Smart-asses on the internet who will criticize ya. *You'll also be criticized if you use cheaper tools from, say, Harbor Freight.
@rickbaker45715 жыл бұрын
@@MuscleDad420 there are so many holes in this "highlighted reply" that it's comical. $3500 Custom Shop guitars have many of the same issues, so blaming it on a "cheap" or "under performing" guitar is ridiculous. And I'd rather be an "internet smartass" than an pot head dumbass, so lay down the pipe and just say NO.
@MuscleDad4205 жыл бұрын
Rick Baker It’s a highlighted reply because it’s a response to your comment you dumbass boomer lol. A $3k guitar is not likely to have sharp pot metal saddles or poor tuning keys. Charging for parts to improve upon issues present on a $400 guitar is a write off to make an okay guitar better. Stew-Mac has nothing to do with the cost of locking tuners or saddles with rounded-over edges. They only offer the product. My point is cheap guitars are killing guitar techs and luthiers because people like you throw a tantrum when they’re handed the bill. The tools are “professional” because they’re designed by and marketed to those in a niche trade. Sure, Stew Mac digital calipers won’t be much better than something a third the price but Phil is doing a commercial and being comped with free tools. Use your head. As for China, it’s more than capable of producing good quality parts and tools if the price is right. In some industries they’re lightyears ahead of the West. If you’re buying cheap junk, it will be junk.

A bit of relief on the neck instead of a perfectly straight neck is the way to go.
@arthurszabo77165 жыл бұрын
I don't remember and I don't want to rewatch it to know, but if he straightened the neck before putting on the strings, the string tension pulls it into a bit of upbow, and there you have your relief. If he straightened with the strings, then your point is valid
@stricknine86235 жыл бұрын
@@arthurszabo7716 That is a good observation. The problem with doing that is that you may end up with quite more neck relief than you need or quite less neck relief than you need. It is very unlikely that it will end up "just right" doing it that way.

@Kaptain Kid Really? Guitars don't need neck relief? Put all that effort into changing tuners and saddles and leave the neck straight. It's going to buzz like a bitch.
@rogermoore27985 жыл бұрын
Correct...you ensure the neck is straight when levelling the frets. After the strings have been installed and 'pulled to pitch' the neck bow thus produced can be adjusted (but not straightened) along with the string height (via the saddles) to give you the action you like. Personally I set up only the 1st n 6th string action first. Once i'm happy with these two outer strings I then use my under string radius gauge to set the heights of the othe four strings to match the fretboard radius. Remembering to check the intonation regularly.

The highwood saddles definitely made a noticeable, positive difference to my mIm Strat in sound and feel. Adding locking tuners was a worthwhile upgrade too. However the biggest improvement for the least amount of money and hassle was certainly replacing the nut for a tusq one and I’m surprised it wasn’t one of the mods here given that Danny E over at StuMac has made that mod on a few of his vids. Swap the string tree upgrade for a nut upgrade and, for me, these are definitely must haves for any squier or mIm Strat.
@stewmac5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. We looked at that, but it's hard to build an upgrade kit that has a nut that will fit all Squiers and imports universally. We found enough variation to not be able to have a one-size-fits-all option, but you're right. A bone nut is a good upgrade option.

It is a good way to ruin your guitar. Phil has always used stewmac on his channel and always says they are expensive and you can find cheaper tools but he is a professional and uses professional tools. You get what you pay for. You can buy a Harley Benton and get a good guitar but an Eastman single cut is not a rebranded Harley Benton. Yes, it is. It's not trying to be anything else. Okay, a how-to and a commercial. Feel better?

I'm trying to upgrade my squire cyclone but there's no spec sheets on sizes. Will it be the same as all squires? It has great vintage tuners but I want vintage locking.

I JUST bought the exact guitar brand new from Zzounds. Seems perfect: plays great, sounds great. Luckily, I'm not sophisticated enough to need to spend all that money and do all this stuff to make it into a guitar that's ACTUALLY good. Plus, how about a before and after so we could see the incredible difference made by the upgrades?

Good video Phil. I like how to improve your guitar videos. They give you the confidence to do this yourself. Thanks

Nice video. Contrary to popular belief any screwdriver will work on a guitar, you don't need a stewmac one ;)

Give Phil a break! Maybe the video should say "For Luthiers only" But all of us know where to get the cheap tools! I would rather watch him do it with the good ones and then make my own decisions on each tool. Phils a pro!

Best stew Mac video I have seen. Great job Phil. Yes their stuff is expensive but it is like buying craftsman tools instead of harbor freight.

Could you guys show how to positioning the saddles from zero without the calipe ??
@RitusG5 жыл бұрын
You don't need to use calipers. Just put the new saddle on and eyeball it close, than set your intonation like normal with a tuner.
@onpsxmember5 жыл бұрын
Search online for the picture of a PRS wrap around bridge. Roughly adjust the saddle position to match that shape. After that some fine adjustment and you got it.
@briangodfrey50795 жыл бұрын
@@RitusG Yes. The calipers were just used to speed up the adjustment. You'd still have to check and probably tweak it.

Ahhh just grab you black and decker drill and eye ball everything. If you mess up grab your jig saw and cut the wood right off and wood glue a nice piece of maple wood from Home Depot. Just sand it nice and hammer on your tuners with a little hammer. 😂😂😂
