Recheck the intonation is where to start. The brand of tools you use doesn't matter. If you changed string saddles that is possibly the reason for a different sound. Check all measurements again and check the pickups height too ✌

Yes, this is the state of luthiery and guitar tech work in the modern age. Guitars are cheap and under-perform in some aspects. Meanwhile performance parts to address these issues tend to be expensive. Factor in the cost of professional tools* to ease work flow and inspire confidence in potential clientele that bring you their $400 budget guitars, or their several thousand dollar vintage pieces. What do you get? Smart-asses on the internet who will criticize ya. *You'll also be criticized if you use cheaper tools from, say, Harbor Freight.
@rickbaker4571
@rickbaker4571 5 жыл бұрын
@@MuscleDad420 there are so many holes in this "highlighted reply" that it's comical. $3500 Custom Shop guitars have many of the same issues, so blaming it on a "cheap" or "under performing" guitar is ridiculous. "professional tool"?? Really? How much of StewMac is made in China? Just like HF... perhaps a bit better, but don't act like these tools are anything special. And I'd rather be an "internet smartass" than an pot head dumbass, so lay down the pipe and just say NO.
@MuscleDad420
@MuscleDad420 5 жыл бұрын
Rick Baker It’s a highlighted reply because it’s a response to your comment you dumbass boomer lol. A $3k guitar is not likely to have sharp pot metal saddles or poor tuning keys. Charging for parts to improve upon issues present on a $400 guitar is a write off to make an okay guitar better. Stew-Mac has nothing to do with the cost of locking tuners or saddles with rounded-over edges. They only offer the product. My point is cheap guitars are killing guitar techs and luthiers because people like you throw a tantrum when they’re handed the bill. The tools are “professional” because they’re designed by and marketed to those in a niche trade. Sure, Stew Mac digital calipers won’t be much better than something a third the price but Phil is doing a commercial and being comped with free tools. Use your head. As for China, it’s more than capable of producing good quality parts and tools if the price is right. In some industries they’re lightyears ahead of the West. If you’re buying cheap junk, it will be junk.

Surprisingly, the Indonesian bridge and trem block were excellent as is. Altogether, only spent $850 on a used Squier I picked up for $200. Now that's how you save a boatload of $$$.

I have been purchasing some Stewmac tools over the last while. It is quality equipment and most of the tools demonstrated by Phil are useful over the long run. The locking tuners are nice but it may not be practical for most to purchase tuners that need the mounting hole reamed and a bushing press is another added expense. The up grade work on the tuners is expensive for a single use. But, the tools are nice.

5:03 For anyone adjusting the bridge saddles to the radius of the fretboard: Make sure that each individual saddle is NOT at an angle. They don't form the radius by looking like a radius but more like small steps. That's a common setup problem. We need more content from Dan.

@arthurszabo7716
@arthurszabo7716 5 жыл бұрын
I don't remember and I don't want to rewatch it to know, but if he straightened the neck before putting on the strings, the string tension pulls it into a bit of upbow, and there you have your relief. If he straightened with the strings, then your point is valid
@stricknine8623
@stricknine8623 5 жыл бұрын
@@arthurszabo7716 That is a good observation. The problem with doing that is that you may end up with quite more neck relief than you need or quite less neck relief than you need. It is very unlikely that it will end up "just right" doing it that way.

@rogermoore2798
@rogermoore2798 5 жыл бұрын
Correct...you ensure the neck is straight when levelling the frets. After the strings have been installed and 'pulled to pitch' the neck bow thus produced can be adjusted (but not straightened) along with the string height (via the saddles) to give you the action you like. Personally I set up only the 1st n 6th string action first. Once i'm happy with these two outer strings I then use my under string radius gauge to set the heights of the othe four strings to match the fretboard radius. Remembering to check the intonation regularly.

The highwood saddles definitely made a noticeable, positive difference to my mIm Strat in sound and feel. Adding locking tuners was a worthwhile upgrade too. However the biggest improvement for the least amount of money and hassle was certainly replacing the nut for a tusq one and I’m surprised it wasn’t one of the mods here given that Danny E over at StuMac has made that mod on a few of his vids. Swap the string tree upgrade for a nut upgrade and, for me, these are definitely must haves for any squier or mIm Strat.
@stewmac
@stewmac 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. We looked at that, but it's hard to build an upgrade kit that has a nut that will fit all Squiers and imports universally. We found enough variation to not be able to have a one-size-fits-all option, but you're right. A bone nut is a good upgrade option.

@@sam127001 I just looked and this is not true. They have some similar ones, but the StewMac ones have a couple of custom features that the HD ones do not. Whether you personally need those features or not, the fact of every manufactured product in the world is that custom features cost extra to produce - and especially in the small quantities that these are being produced. You'll find this to be true in everything: compare the price of cheap Costco toilet paper to 100% recycled, or compare the cost of a Toyota Camry to a McLaren 720S. Is it possible to modify a regular single coil by adding a Telecaster bridge pickup base plate, so it then has the three screws, instead of the screw on either ear? I was just wondering if it was at all possible and whether or not to try it out and see if I liked it more than the stock Squier bridge pickup. I'll upload a video of the results if it's doable. I don’t know why all the negative comments. This was a stewmac video not a know your gear video. Give Phil a break. He is just trying to make a living doing what he likes. He is an accomplished luthier and is qualified to demonstrate stewmac tools. Try using a stewmac reamer and a harbor freight reamer. There is no comparison. I have used a harbor freight reamer. It is a good way to ruin your guitar. Phil has always used stewmac on his channel and always says they are expensive and you can find cheaper tools but he is a professional and uses professional tools. You get what you pay for. You can buy a Harley Benton and get a good guitar but an Eastman single cut is not a rebranded Harley Benton. My only gripe with stewmac is their shipping costs. $10 for shipping a $10 dollar product is a problem. I would rather see a stewmac video with Phil hosting it that someone else. Most of these comments are by Internet "EdgeLords" who think they have to be snarky to everything because they rule from their basements. You are spot on. Most of these comments deriding Phillip are stupid and silly. They are just commenting to make noise.

@goodguystu Generally we don't chime in on these type of comments. However, I think it is worth mentioning that we asked Phil to help us launch this new product. That was the purpose of the video. We provided him no script and just a modest fee for his time to make the video. We have been a supporter of what he is doing (and his channel) for quite some time and we were proud to work with him on this product launch. There's nothing nefarious about it. No major sponsorships. Just a couple of content producers who are both guitar enthusiasts getting together to make a video.

My god some people are petty as fuck. How dare he not underachieve and stay with the little guy?? I don’t think people even know what “sold out” even means these days. Apparently it’s impossible to take any opportunity for yourself without being considered a “sellout” to these twerps.

I just got this kit to use on my original Squire '51. I just roughed in the tuning machines. (did not have to ream holes) Man they are way shorter than original. Dunno if good or bad thing, but really gonna change break angle over the nut. Hope it works. I love this guitar, but definitely wanted the lockers and the better saddles.

I am familiar with the pricing of dial calipers! 55 dollars for the stewmac 6" (154mm), with .0005" (.01mm) resolution calipers is actually not bad. Cheapest chinese impots with good resolution are 25.00. 100 dollars for top Mitutoyo quality. The Stewmac 36-bit set at 46 dollars is pretty expensive however there is a variety of sizes. Premade kits will have duplicates that might not have variety. Something to remember when buying a set at home depot. Or a import tool supply house. Stewmac are billing themselves as specialty tools. Not sure of Stewmacs warranty on the tools. They are priced the similar as tools with a lifetime warranty

I JUST bought the exact guitar brand new from Zzounds. Seems perfect: plays great, sounds great. Luckily, I'm not sophisticated enough to need to spend all that money and do all this stuff to make it into a guitar that's ACTUALLY good. Plus, how about a before and after so we could see the incredible difference made by the upgrades?

You don't need to use calipers. Just put the new saddle on and eyeball it close, than set your intonation like normal with a tuner.

Search online for the picture of a PRS wrap around bridge. Roughly adjust the saddle position to match that shape. After that some fine adjustment and you got it.

Ahhh just grab you black and decker drill and eye ball everything. If you mess up grab your jig saw and cut the wood right off and wood glue a nice piece of maple wood from Home Depot. Just sand it nice and hammer on your tuners with a little hammer. 😂😂😂
