These people are thinking just because Xbox spent 70 billion dollars they shouldn't be laying people off. That's not how it works.

Firesprite, Playstation London Studio, Playstation Japan Studio, PixelOpus, Deviation Games (who had partnered with Sony/PS) have been either closed and/or people layed off (some were relocated to work on other projects). The same applies with Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios being closed. There will unfortunately be layoffs, and/or some people will be reassigned to other projects. Whether it is a Sony/PS Studio (or partner studio) or a Microsoft/Xbox studio, closures and layoffs are never pleasant. Microsoft and Sony have business' to run and unfortunately that will sometimes mean layoffs, relocations, or studio closures. If costs are not controlled well enough, a company can see lower profits or Market Cap value (or both). In the case of Sony (for example), their MC is currently at $96.7 billion (down $60 billion since Dec 2021). My thoughts and prayers go out to those people affected by the layoffs and studio closures. 🙏

Very true, when you have 10B in revenue and only clear 600M in profit, of course you're gonna have to change things. Same with MS. They made a profit on the back of ABK, but it was really slim even though it was large comparatively. If you only see a 2 or 3% increase in revenue while leaving out the new addition, that means changes were going to be made, and that would have happened to either company and has happened to both

Wait a minute. So SONY lays off studios like BEND ( Who created Days Gone ) and the dev said it won`t be a part 2, cause the fans didn`t buy enough copies of Days Gone. And was it news saying it`s over for SONY? What about all the other studios they laid off? SONY`S doom & Gloom can we say that now. As a whole the gaming industry is suffering from Lay offs. Didn`t the company Take-Two lay off some people as well? So what`s the point of SONY still being around then?

Why did no one talk about how Sony is currently running Firesprite into the ground only a year or two after acquiring them? Sony fired all the leadership from Firesprite and replaced them with execs that reportedly treat the devs like trash and ruined the culture the studio once had when they were independent. No wonder you haven't really seen anything big from Firesprite for a while because the studio is a complete mess at the moment. Where tf were the articles about Sony's mismanagement back then?

Sony laid off employees from some studios. They didn't close those studios, the most recent studio they closed was London Studio which is a studio they created and not acquired. The news you see about Xbox is because of the scale of layoffs they are doing which is way more than Sony as well as closing multiple studios, ones they just bought with the promise of supporting them to create new games for Xbox and Gamepass. Then turned around and did the exact opposite by shuting them down and porting those games to PS/Nintendo. The only reason a platform holder would do that is if they arent making enough money to continue with just their console and PC strategies. Sony is just now starting to port to PC showing that PS is struggling with just console. Both companies are in completely different levels of struggle and Xbox just happens to be the one struggling the most.

​@@ANTORT1993 You do realize Xbox is making more profit hand over fist than Sony is, right? It's not Xbox whose profit margins are the worst they've been in a decade, it's PlayStation. Not to mention the claim that "Sony didn't shut down studios" is a lie. Sony shut down Japan Studio (the first-ever first-party PlayStation studio), PixelOpus, Guerilla Cambridge (a studio Sony acquired, not created), and now London Studio over the last 3 or so years. They even laid off a bunch of people from Naughty Dog and the recently-acquired Insomniac, their two prize studios. Out of the big three, PlayStation is the one struggling the most financially, hence why Hiroki Totoki and Herman Hulst have openly expressed that PlayStation will become more of a multiplatform business going forward and will no longer just rely on PlayStation console/game sales. Xbox is struggling as well, but most of it is in large part because of the impatience of shareholders who want the money back from MS's ABK acquisition as soon as possible, among other things.

Yes they reported record profits, but that was only attaind by the ABK profit numbers, if the deal didn't go through this numbers would have showed that xbox was losing money every year after year. Those profits were good for MA because it gained from stuff ABK released on its own because MS wasn't in control until recently. Now that they are MS will be footing the bill for the development of new games from this studios, they spent last few years releasing games they didn't full finance themselves as they bought them during development. Now that they have to run all them by themselves they realize it cost a whole lot which is why they are closed some studios and releasing games on other consoles.

With or without ABK I think this would have happened with Bethesda's studios. Think about it - Redfall would have still launched broken and with all people that already left they would have closed them. HiFi Rush still would not have sold well or been finished by many people and a sequel would not have been greenlit. What did ABK change? MS still dont want studios whos games dont make profit.

Couldn't watch last night Durt but I'm watching this morning. Business as usual seems to be the key word again this week. And once again we see more fake outrage from pony-bots and pony bitches everywhere. This is getting tiring now. When will people see that the people at the top are only concerned in numbers, profit and ROI's. I'm not always happy with their decisions but I'm not the one making these decisions, and I'll be the first to admit that I am NOT qualified to make these kind of decisions. Xbox will be here today, tomorrow and further down that line that ponies can't see their brand surviving the forming landscape that's being sculpted by Phil Spencer. I am a consumer, not a big top notch business head and while I have an opinion, my understanding of these scenarios is limited. The difference between myself and ponies and pony-bots is that I'm not out here trying to tell everyone that I know what I'm talking about in this decision. They know more than me and I know more than ponies or pony-bots (most likely). Just shut up, and buy your game and play it or go on Twitter and tell everyone that you played it and didn't like it (coz it's Xbox). I've been watching you since before covid Durt, and then Shaan. There's a couple more I watch but that list is getting shorter. But the inescapable truth in all this is Xbox are doing a lot of new moves and no one is familiar with this new Xbox. Phil pulled back Xbox from the brink of demise and no one thought he'd pull it off. But he did! And here we are. Now he has to continue with these massive, world changing moves and hussles and the best way forward is this one. And who's to say that some AI tool (which MSFT has invested into heavily) hasn't divulged to Phil that this play is the only one that could work? Phil Spencer IS Dr. Strange and Thanos just lost the glove and next comes the final wave before this battle is over and done with! Cheers Durt. Great show. See you soon Brother.

People treating HiFi Rush like it's the second coming now that Tango's gone, but hardly anyone bought it when it came out and even less people bought it when it came to PS5. They had all these chances to get the game and they shrugged it off and moved on. Nobody cared until Tango was gone.

I definitely cared about Tango from the very beginning, but the PS5 fanboys and the media didn't. They tried to downplay it because it was an Xbox exclusive game. That, and the complete lack of marketing for the game from Microsoft (shadow dropping it was a mistake in retrospect), resulted in it flopping. Also, I hate to say it, but Hi-Fi Rush was just too pro-consumer of a game for its own good. It should have been $60 instead of $30, given that it took 5 years to make and wasn't really all that cheap or low budget to develop. Microsoft should have treated it like they did Redfall, Forza, and Starfield: as a big AAA tentpole release for 2023. Treating it like it was a small indie side project when it really wasn't was not a good idea, it turns out. And the game should have never released on PS5 because clearly Sony fanboys were not gonna buy this game, so that was another mistake as well. But that's a whole nother story.

Theres a difference in Tango making a 5 year big budget game that didnt sell (among all their other non sellers) and Obsidian making Grounded and Pentiment on the heels of Kotor 2, Outer Worlds, Fallout NV. Same with Rare , 30 years plus of excellence making SoT. Compared to tango for 14 years making commercial flops and the studio head leaving. Gamepass can support side projects that are niche, not studio main games that continue not to sell. big difference in context.

I been gaming since early 90s. My first console was Sega Genesis. My take on the Xbox situation. It’s not all about the layoffs and closing of 4 studios. It’s the Xbox division as a whole. Ever since Xbox existed Microsoft been trying to find their place in gaming. Their best console was the 360. Since then, From a business perspective (share holders) Microsoft been screwing up. They shot themselves in the foot with Xbox One (24 hour check in and cable box) even though now devices require some time of check in but back then it was bad move. Xbox Series X/S (Game Pass). The 360 was perfect but they almost blew that with (RROD). I just feel like they don’t learn from their mistakes. From business perspective Nintendo worst console was the Wii U. Sony worst console was the PS3. Sony and Microsoft are both doing bad but what happen previous generations make Microsoft look worse. Sorry for long comment
