To address a common criticism of this video: I understand that Marvel took a bunch of obscure comic book heroes and turned them into massively popular properties, but there's a huge difference between comic books and video games. You can take just about any superhero and turn them into a cool movie series. The very concept of a superhero makes for broadly appealing cinema. These characters also have long histories with loads of story arcs to choose from. Comic books are already so similar to movies, you can look at any series and already see the movie potential. It translates so well. Nintendo has a bunch of extremely Japanese-flavored properties, many of which started as surreal and minimally developed NES games. Most of them have very little story to speak of. They've always focused on gameplay first. They would have to build these universes almost entirely from scratch and transform these properties into something very different. Marvel took superheroes who punch and shoot bad guys and made movies that everyone liked because everyone likes watching people punch and shoot bad guys. Expecting that same audience to watch a video about little plant people or talking animals in space or whatever is not reasonable. I'm not saying Nintendo can't do ANYTHING with their properties, or that any and all projects are doomed to fail. But I just don't think the Marvel comparison works at all. This is apples and oranges. Adapting completely different works created using completely different philosophies from completely different mediums.
@AceBattleStorm5 ай бұрын
I agree, it's not a good comparison
@Satellaview18895 ай бұрын
Most comic books have more traditional stories in them, whereas a lot of Nintendo games are more focused on just being good games, meaning they wouldn't translate as well to film. It's a good point.
@AntiAnnihilator50005 ай бұрын
It feels like you're making two or three points in one post. I agree with some of it. Marvel has a formula that is mass-marketable and applies to the vast majority of their properties (and nearly everything they have adapted as a film). It's easier to come up with a successful line of films in their situation because it all appeals to the same sort of audiences. It builds a cohesive fanbase in a way that Nintendo can't count on having on a company-wide basis. Nintendo would have the challenge of figuring out how to market each franchise they try. I disagree about the obscurity point for a couple of reasons. First, the idea that the MCU's early lead characters were obscure is a misconception. Yes, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk did not have Spider-Man or X-Men levels of popularity prior to the MCU, but they were the most notable characters Marvel had the film rights to at the time the MCU started. They were all staples of popular culture even if the public's knowledge of them was kiddie pool shallow. Sure, the audience might have thought Hulk's name was David because of the Lou Ferrigno show and they might mostly know how the Avengers line-up functions through the Justice Friends parody in Dexter's Lab, but it's not like they went out of the gate with Black Widow or Ant-Man. The lead characters had all been heavily adapted in Marvel's 90's animated outings and had been featured prominently in video games across two decades before those movies happened. Second, I think you overemphasize the size of the existing fanbase and downplay the concerns over if the games can be adapted well. Games that are less popular, but which are very story-driven could theoretically be great material for adaption. Consider the case of Earthbound. It follows a very simple archetypal "Hero's Journey" plot structure with enough twists and turns that can easily be truncated to its key plot beats and fit into a two hour movie with no story/plot/dialogue invention required on the part of a studio and with plenty of opportunity to pander to adults' nostalgia for childhood and to give children the kind of wholesome messages family films revolve around. The game's fanbase is microscopic compared to Donkey Kong or Luigi's Mansion, but at least the studio wouldn't have to go through draft after draft of a script trying to figure out how you squeeze two hours of entertainment out of a guy sucking ghosts up with a vaccuum or a monkey chasing a heap of bananas. Somehow the Mario Movie ended up actually happening, but that kind of directionless, tortured writing process is exactly how you end up getting serious film projects valued at hundreds of millions of dollars stuck in development hell in the writing room. The more Mario series movies that exist at any point in time, the harder it will be to give the spin-offs some semblance of a plot. Of course just going for what works and building off of it is the more likely course and would be considered safer by Nintendo's film partners, therefore would be more likely to happen. I don't mean to suggest because Earthbound would be easier to adapt that it would be more likely to happen, but when you look at the failure to adapt the Metroid movie, I think it should be apparent that the same problem has a risk of looming over the copious Mario spin-offs that seem realistic at this juncture. I think anyone endeavoring to adapt Nintendo franchises must seriously consider if a faithful adaptation can be made without having to bend over backwards to make it work as a movie. Sometimes, as with the Mario movie, the fanbase is big enough that it makes sense to do that anyway. I'm inclined to think workable source material is better for a production than attaching it to an already popular series. I get that Hollywood conventionally assumes they have the games' fanbase as viewers by default, but that usually isn't true if you look at the history of video game adaptations.

On a positive note - this will actually encourage Nintendo to CARE about the stories, characters and lore in their games from this point forward. Dedede’s body begins jittering a moment after taking hold of the dark matter orb. He collapses, but then his body rises as if puppeted with invisible strings. “Kirby,” his voice says, off-kilter. “We don’t need to fight anymore, Kirby. I’m happy now.” Dedede slowly turns around, his head turning farther and faster than it should. “Kirby, please hold this. It’s so wonderful,” Dedede’s voice slurs and droops. His eyes now face Kirby, pitch black. From them leak a dark, starry liquid that streams down his face and stains his robes. “I can see the universe, Kirby. I can see all of it.” His voice sounds choked up, as if on the verge of crying. “Just… hold… it…” Kirby appears mildly concerned at most. He wonders what flavor of ice cream he will have when he gets home. “I CAN SHOW YOU INFINITY, KIRBY.” Dedede’s body limps toward Kirby. He coughs up more of the dark, starry liquid as if he were drowning in it. “IT’S B…E…A…U…T…I…F…U…L…” The starry liquid now leaks from every part of his body. Dark veins pulse as he quivers uncontrollably. His neck bends back and snaps as his skin bursts. The flesh melts from his body, his hand still clutching the dark matter orb. With the last bit of air still left in his lungs, Dedede gurgles out, “H…A…P…P…Y…” Flesh and bone alike dissolve into that starry liquid, puddling around where Dedede’s body once was. The puddle widens and deepens. Staring into it, it seems to go on forever. It rises and expands, appearing to wrap around everything in sight, consuming the shrine where the dark matter orb was held. Kirby no longer feels the ground beneath his feet. Something reaches deep into Kirby’s mind. With the guttural force of a supernova, it speaks only one word: *”EMBRACE”* Kirby looks into the void and sees staring back at him with a trillion starry eyes the Infinity of the Universe itself. It sought him out to consume him. It seethes with desire and envy. It now embraces its only true rival, the only other truly infinite cosmic being. All it needs to do is crack him open and absorb his infinitessence. Strawberry ice cream with rainbow sprinkles, Kirby decides. But dessert will have to wait. He needs to eat dinner first.

It really is kind of shocking how Nintendo hasn't announced anything on the TV side of things - especially now that movie industry is in a death spiral as far as quality, originality, box office numbers and general consumer interest goes. The pandemic changed everything in this regard. Streaming services, expensive prices & food, social media and noisy audience members have made the theater experience obsolete; it seems the only movies that do legitimately well these days are massive pop-culture "hype event" flicks that are either one or more of the following: 1 - Major (usually first-time) movie adaptations based off of a popular IP or brand (Barbie, Mario Bros, FNAF) 2 - legitimately good, passion-driven films and sequels, often backed by respected film makers (Oppenheimer, Top Gun, Dune,) 3- Visual spectacles that can only be fully appreciated through a big-screen viewing (James Cameron's Avatar, Spiderverse) 4- Family films that kids love - forcibly dragging parents, siblings and other relatives to cough up the money and watch it with them (Minions, Jurassic World) Even then, points 1 & 3 aren't surefire guarantees for a successful sequel or potential movie series. If the quality is bad, then people will inevitably drop out and abandon it (see: Star Wars, Marvel, etc.) Example being, I don't predict a ton of people flocking to the FNAF sequel outside of fans because it was just THAT bad, and I personally have no interest in seeing the Mario Bros. sequel, as I wasn't impressed with the first movie. It'll still make its money thanks to kids dragging their parents & relatives to see it, but Arlo is right in this regard: unless if the quality of these movies improve, then interest WILL inevitably fizzle out - especially for the older "nostalgia-based" target demographics. This is just how it is for the modern movie landscape; TV shows honestly have an easier time now.

Having the majority of the movie take place on Norion or something with the baby in custody would give ample opportunity to show Samus actually spending time with the little guy, too! If we’re talking Mario spin-offs, Peach doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hades for her own movie. She’s too linked with Mario for that to work. I would actually say the same for Yoshi. Wario actually has a chance thanks to his multitude of games to pull from. Also, Don’t count out series like F-Zero, Star Fox, or even Punch Out. They may not have the fans to back them up, but their general concepts would actually make for a compelling movie. As to the Smash movie, it could work, and to those who think Mario shouldn’t be the main character, Mario is and always has been the main character of Smash. (Except for Kirby, but his face isn’t as recognizable.) To those wanting shows, pick one. Any could work. My money’s on a new Mario show though.

I think the big thing that should be considered with making movies is the idea to expand the awareness of an IP. Metroid might not sell many games, but if Nintendo thinks that’s Metroid movie or show could grow the brand, that would be enough for them to want to make it, and studios would look at it as more IP they get to adapt which is all they’re thinking about right now. The video game movie boom seems to be either happening or on the horizon, so studios will be looking for things to adapt, even if they don’t have the biggest sales. At least, that’s the way I see it.

On one end: Considering how different all Nintendo franchise are, it would make WAY more sense for them to be self contained than linked in a Cinematic Universe On the other end: Making a cinematic universe of Nintendo movies will incentivize Nintendo to make movies out of more obscure franchises in order to fill up their NCU roster a bit more. Also, Smash Bros movie would be so fucking cool.
@raistlinmajere71495 ай бұрын
But we can also get the issue of the movies slowly being the same thing over and over which is the biggest critcism of the more recent marvel movies. If we get a Cinematic universe from Nintendo I would hope they could make each movie or show unique and interesting without each one feeling the same.
@johnclark9265 ай бұрын
I don’t like the idea of a Smash movie, but I am in favor of Nintendo’s less ubiquitous series getting some spotlight. I think one of the fundamental issues plaguing cinematic universes is that every film has to conform to an overarching genre, for Marvel this has been action/comedy and for DC this has been action/drama. If things were to build towards a Smash Bros movie, then Animal Crossing wouldn’t be able to have a nice slice of life movie because then they would be trampled over/flipped upside down for an epic Smash movie. Nintendo’s strength is their breadth of genres and characters, I’m not saying there shouldn’t be any crossover (for example, I’m fine with the kitsch “Punch-Out Pizza” reference because Mario was already a referee in Punch-Out, it’s not too much of a stretch that their connected together), but I think they have too much to lose pursuing a Smash movie compared to if each film was a self-contained story.
@calvinbrinenestoris23575 ай бұрын
@@raistlinmajere7149 Yeah, they'd need to avoid that. The problem that a lot of both Marvel and Nintendo stuff have in common here is that most of their initial stories revolve around the same premise: An unlikely hero (or small group of heroes) does a bunch of cool action stuff to beat a bad guys who are causing problems everywhere, eventually preventing their endgame and killing the bid bad.
@calvinbrinenestoris23575 ай бұрын
@@johnclark926 IMO, the best way for them to handle a Smash movie would be for them to only make ONE, and have everyone's minds get wiped at the end, that way it's a crossover that doesn't affect each individual world as a whole and people wouldn't have to watch the whole cinematic universe to know what's happening.
@henryhere5 ай бұрын
It really wouldn't be. It would be a jarbled mess, coming up with convoluted ways to get everyone there, the plot wouldn't be any good because smash bros has never been about the plot nor has it ever had a cohesive one. "Oh but brawl did it" no it didn't. It was fun, and the cutscenes looked cool, but as a story it was a complete mess, made to justify the levels. Subspace emissary is my favorite thing in smash bros, but if it proves anything it's that a smash movie WOULDN'T work, because it only works as a playable party/competitive game
@Stephen-Fox5 ай бұрын
One thing you missed in your analysis - Hollywood used to make these smaller budget films that made (often with larger ROI because if you're only spending 10-20m, as horror often used to cost, plus another 10-20m marketting because you don't need to market lower budget films as much, you don't need nearly as many bums in seats to make 5x profit). At some point the major studios decided they wanted to focus exclusively on the high budget films that either or were huge hits or major flops for the studio. Doesn't change the conclusion ('big IP only rather than just things that could be profitable if the budget was kept under control') but the way it gets to the conclusion differs somewhat.

I just don't know what to think with a Zelda movie. We don't even have a good idea of what aspect of the series they'd want to adapt. One camp says it's obviously going to be Breath of the Wild /Tears of the Kingdom - a retelling, or just that it's set in that iteration if the series with a new narrative. These are the games, realistically speaking, most active (as in people currently interacting with the series) fans are familiar with. They've sold far more than any prior Zeldas, and it appears to be the direction Nintendo wants to go in, in defining Zelda's identity. The other main camp I see is Ocarina of Time as the basis for a Zelda movie. Prior to Breath of the Wild, it was the biggest Zelda. It has the most iconic depiction of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. If you want to grab older Zelda fans, evoke a more traditional medieval fantasy story, this is probably a good bet. However, it is pretty old. For this to work, they'd need a big new remake of Ocarina of Time to reestablish that version of the series in the public eye. I'll also include that Twilight Princess could probably form a lot of elements in this version of a Zelda film, even if it's not a more overt homage. Sadly I don't think other options for Zelda movies have much realistic weight. Majora's Mask is just too weird for general audiences to not be a big risk - I'd only expect to see it if an Ocarina of Time esque movie does well. Wind Waker and other games in the series would almost certainly be animated if adapted, which would of course be too risky for boring executives and all that, sadly. So yeah, either Calamity Era modern Zelda, or some toss up between Ocarina and Twilight Princess. The smart money is on the new games. Nintendo follows the money, and that's where they want to go. I don't expect us to see an adaptation of classic Zelda, with the green cap and a fairy anytime soon. What I do expect, unfortunately, is endless references - oh wow look it's a mosaic on that wall that looks like Link to the Past Link pixel art 🤯 Then Link quips "huh, why was the ancient hero's hair pink??" I'm not... exactly expecting great things from this movie tbh .

A couple things to consider: Even though many Nintendo franchises maybe don't have the pull to bring in huge audiences, a cinematic universe where they get their own movies could actually MAKE them household names. Marvel's own cinematic universe was populated with characters that next to no one other than hardcore comic book fans knew before their movies came out (Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, etc.) but the fact that they existed in a shared universe with other good movies allowed them to lift each other up and create shared success. People went to see them not only because they looked like good movies on their own, but ALSO because they knew they'd eventually crossover with characters they already knew and loved, so I could definitely see something similar happening with Nintendo's IPs! However, especially because Nintendo is taking their time and going to multiple different studios to make adaptations, I think something like your pitch for a Smash movie would be far more plausible. I'm thinking something like Across the Spider-Verse: have Mario be the main character and our primary focus, but have him hop through pipes to different universes where he meets a bunch of other characters, and have TONS of little cameos and easter eggs to appeal to hardcore fans without alienating general audiences. A very exciting idea that I hope comes to fruition one day!

I'm not placing a lot of faith in Nintendo movies, at least not now, but I am very intrigued to see what Nintendo does from here. The Mario movie opened up so many possibilities and I think Nintendo should grab them by the horns now. I'm staying cautiously optimistic for the live-action Zelda movie, and would love a DK movie too. In terms of Fire Emblem, from the perspective of a brand new fan of the series, I think the franchise is best suited for anime adaptations. Each season/series can be based on one game, or two games for Blazing Blade/Binding Blade and Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn. This is all wishful thinking, btw

I once had a dream where I watched an early few minutes of a Star Fox movie. It showed Star Fox as a wise-cracking young pilot who, after a chase scene, crashed on an asteroid but managed to escape his pursuers, proceeded by him humorously talking through possible ways to escape his situation, before realizing he had none of the tools to do it, potentially setting up some kind of rescuer, if I know my opening scene tropes. Art direction was similar to Zootopia and I remember his design being way more expressive than in his games. It was fairly quippy and campy but I would be intrigued by a proper origin story, which the games have never really done. What was he like before he was a star pilot? Before losing his father to Andross? Before meeting his team and conquering his first few missions? I think it has way more potential than you'd think at first glance.

I feel like the best method is to use a “Prometheus” approach. Make a movie that could appeal to a large audience, but only subtlety connect it to a franchise in the trailers. Kind of a “if you know, you know” deal. The fans will recognize it and want to see it, the general public can get interested because it’s an interesting movie. Then when the movie comes out and the reveal at the end more firmly connects it, the fans will still be happy and the general audience can look further into the series if they want. Metroid could absolutely benefit in this way.

My pitch for a metroid movie- Troop transport lands on a planet prime 2 style for a mission, pirates show up and wipe them out, one survivor. First half of the movie is the survivor interacting with familiar ememies, avoiding pirates, sending a distress signal. Samus responds to the signal, arrives, we see her save the survivor, the pirates retreat just from her presence, showing how powerful she must be. We see samus and the survivor interact, she stays silent, she doesn't laugh at jokes, shes merciless with enemies, she's almost scary. Finale involves shutting down the pirates and then escaping, metroid lab discovery, queen metroid boss fight, self destruct escape timer sequence, samus takes off her helmet. Then an after credit scene with ridley looking at the camera and winking.

It's worth noting the only person who knew Samus's character fully at that point in time was Yoshio Sakamoto, and he only started getting to know her character with Super Metroid in 1994, as it was his first project as a director for Metroid. He wasn't in the talks with those movie directors, and he was still likely fleshing out Samus's character since Fusion was the first game to really do that, and the Metroid Manga that tied in to Zero Mission as a prequel story to it. Those didn't come around until 2002 and 2003 respectively, so no one really knew Samus's character in more depth until then, so the John Woo Metroid trilogy must've been in the talks pre-2002.

Honestly, I would be shocked if Illumination didn't pick up a Splatoon movie for their first non-Mario movie. Their Sing movies are all about musical performances and feature artists like Pharrell Williams and Tori Kelly voicing characters, so having licensed music interspersed into the soundtrack would actually be fitting for the universe, and they could cast actual pop singers in the roles of the Squid Sisters and the like. I could see the plot being sort of like the Splatoon manga focusing on a group of four friends who are teamed up to win a Turf War tournament, but one of the friends gets recruited by Captain Cuttlefish to stop the Octarian army in Octo Canyon and it makes that one friend have to try and balance both situations. I could also see an argument for a Fire Emblem movie, albeit not to the extent of these other movies. I see it more as an theatrical anime adaptation of one of the games, in the same sense as the three theatrically released Fate/Grand Order movies (or like the Demon Slayer and Haikyu movies that did get an international release in theaters). As for which game they'd choose, I would say it's between an adaptation of FE1/FE3 (just because that's Marth's story), adapting Awakening, or adapting Heroes. Three Houses is sort of tough to adapt given that the plot branches out into three different paths and they aren't likely to adapt ALL of the paths in the game. There is some merit to adapting Heroes in my opinion, since you'd be able to feature many different characters from across the series and use them for marketing, though I could see it being a limited roster that expands with any potential sequels (i.e. only select characters from FE1/3, Awakening, Three Houses, and maybe Ike and Lyn as standalones in the first film, followed by select characters from Fates, PoR/RD, SoV in the second). Also yeah, Kirby feels like a shoe-in for a movie. While not as popular as Mario, I do feel the design would draw in kids a lot, and the anime even made a general plot structure you could follow if you didn't want to directly adapt a game. And for comparison, while still not on the same level of popularity, Garfield as an IP has basically been quiet outside of the comics since Viacom acquired the IP (because their next TV show still hasn't come out), and yet the Garfield Movie has surpassed $100,000,000 worldwide in terms of box office with kids walking out of the movie with Garfield shirts and merchandise. You could easily make the case that Kirby could perform similarly.

After Zelda and Mario, I would honestly feel like Kirby would be next to hit the big screen or a service, Metroid isn’t big enough

Dude, I hadn’t even thought of a Luigi’s Mansion movie! You are right! That would be an absolutely brilliant Halloween move, and really does feel plausible! Make it happen Nintendo!

Kirby is definitely the next movie they should work on. He's recognizable. Friendly and we can have colorful settings with dark undertones and show off his world.

Haven’t watched the vid yet but I wonder whether a live action Metroid or animated Metroid would work the best, I could see both working well (animation WOULD be easier to transfer different designs onto the big screen compared to live action, but live action I do think could still work)

Honestly Metroid is probably the franchise that most fits live action, given that the artstyle has a more “realistic” look to it compared to other series

While I wasn't a fan of the new Mario movie, I do appreciate its existence as now, movie & game discourse have one property with both the most and least faithful adaptations possible; now people can choose which camp they fall in as far as faithfulness goes. My friends & I prefer the ‘93 movie, tho maybe that’s just how fun it is to watch as a group. I’ve got a lot of hope for the Zelda movie, if only because Wes Ball is the director-literally they picked the guy that tweeted out a decade ago that Zelda needed a big, Avatar-like movie. He also directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which has done really well so far, critically and commercially. Definitely less skeptical about this movie’s success. And as for every other property, I don’t need big blockbuster theatrical releases for Metroid or F-Zero, but can’t we get some anime movies for them? 2D or 3D, either could work, and just make it super stylized to match the vibes & aesthetics of each series. I get that Mario’s billion dollar box office haul is gonna keep dollar signs in the Nintendo exec’s eyes, but just throw a series at a studio like Madhouse or Kamikaze Douga and let ‘em cook! Anime itself is getting more popular year-over-year-we’re getting a Lord of the Rings anime movie this December, that’s bound to be a big deal. Where were you when the scrabulars invaded?

The minute a Kirby movie (hopefully) gets announced, I’m literally going to scream like a banshee and faint wherever I am (I already loved the anime so much, a movie could work so well)🤞🏻

For Zelda to truly work as a multi movie franchise, they would need to take a “Lord of the Rings” approach. An epic hero’s journey spanning 3 movies and while I personally adore Zelda and would welcome it, I don’t know if they have a cast of characters that could sustain that level of high fantasy. We need multiple protagonists to follow interwoven stories. I hope the movie does great, but I am also a tad nervous

They could do it so that it follows Ocarina of Time ‐> Majora's Mask -> Twilight Princess

If Nintendo gave me a check and told me to write a script based on any of their IPs, I would easily choose Metroid and try to make it as close to an R as possible.
@gunned_5 ай бұрын
Not a show or movie idea, but I think a return of nintendo comics/manga would be cool and a way to output lesser known ip in a different medium, if done well of course.

Arlo, here is your proof that a metroid movie is VERY LIKELY: 1. The rumors say that a metroid movie is very likely. 2. If Nintendo makes more movies they might be like 'aw, heck, why not?' And try it. 3. Audiences love large sci fi blockbusters. If they play their cards right, they'll make a fantastic pg-13 rated live action science fiction action masterpiece with Samus working with federation marines sorta like Aliens, with large parts of the metroid lore portrayed masterfully. Huge action setpieces, snappy dialog, and an overarching story involving phason that wraps up nicely enough at the end is the PERFECT sequel bait that SHALL spawn into an entire metroid Prime trilogy of movies! If they put enough big actors, action scenes, and just make a GREAT movie, audiences will love it, and the series will be a pretty large success. Obviously not mario numbers, but pretty great. I AM COMPLETELY CONFIDENT THAT A METROID MOVIE COULD ABSOLUTELY WORK. You should listen to your editors more. By the way, while I have you here, I love your content.

For it to work, it totally needs to lean heavily on its Alien basis. It wouldn't really be a 'kids movie', but it would be so amazing.

Ach… there’s so much potential for a Zelda film franchise to be the next big thing though! The stories in Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask would make for a *fantastic* trilogy. Skyward Sword would make an interesting prequel movie. Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks, Spider-Verse or Puss in Boots the Last Wish-Type experimental animated trilogy. Twilight Princess would be your 30 years later legacy sequel that people would hate for ruining the character of Hero of Time Link/Hero’s Shade. A Link Between Worlds, parallel universe cash cow. Link’s Awakening, a Lynchian expressionistic standalone movie by a prestigious director they’d convince. And if they want to go original, there’s a ton of other threats in multiple Zelda games-Vaati, Yuga, Demise, Agahnim, Ghirahim, Bellum, Malladus, Veran, Onox, Twinrova… Themes to explore, primarily power, wisdom, courage, but furthermore, history, legacy, corruption, friendship, brotherhood, love, betrayal, despair, hope, acceptance, growth, time, I mean come on!!! You could mix and match, release some on the big screen, others as shows, streaming exclusives, etc. Disney, and the market, needs some competition, and Nintendo can bring it!

I think an animal crossing movie could do really well especially if it’s pretty low budget because of the low stakes, slice of life narrative just push the cute cozy factor and I think it could work
