That point about how metaphors can be better descriptors because they evoke specific emotional responses I think is really interesting. I feel like in certain situations and especially when writing, being able to make the reader or person you're talking to think about specific memory they had can be a super powerful tool. Good stuff keep up what you're doing

And as Liz said in the video, shared context is key in attempting to evoke a specific memory in another person. For instance, my husband once described me as a "relic". My mind immediately conjured an image of the withered hand of a long dead saint slowly decaying in a cold stone sepulchre in the damp catacombs underneath the ruins of a forgotten monastery. Needless to say, that wasn't a pleasant thought and I took offense. At which point, he quickly explained that he was actually thinking of something precious beneath a glass display in a museum. So, of course, my mind brought up a picture of a withered mummy's body suffering the indignity of a slow public disintegration for an attempt to amuse bored teens into feeling a connection with discarded history. Then my husband, in a state of repulsion from the mental images I described, a state of shock that my mind would even keep such thoughts on file, and exasperation at my mind's resistance to recalling something pleasant, explained that he meant something like the crown jewels of England. In my husband's mind, a relic is a revered item from the past that is preserved and displayed for posterity. In my mind, a relic is something that has fallen into such obsolescence that it's decomposing. If a person wants to communicate evoke a certain feeling in his/her audience, s/he needs to know his/her listener(s) well enough to use the language that would recall the intended image and emotion. In my husband's case, he could have used the words "National Treasure" to describe me, and my mind would have jumped to The Bill of Rights or The Declaration of Independence. But I still would have been offended. I mean, who wants to be a once-loved, but now seldom considered, item presented before a disinterested party?

No it isn't but to relate the action of that "something special" to something else that uses the same motion would be a metaphor.

A metaphor is like not comparing what something is like by saying what it is like, but by saying what is alike by not saying is like. Damn, how hard is it.

Metaphor helps to communicate ideas without limiting them to the encumbrances of specific definition. This is why poetry can be so effective in delivery subtleties. Pointing towards something rather than defining sharply. One may argue that there is safety in vague speech; but in the context of philosophical discourse, beware of walled ideas and the limits of language.

Metaphors reflect how we think, not just how we speak. Her first premise that we don't really mean what we say when we use metaphors is inaccurate. We mean it because it is how we make sense of things. When I said above that metaphors "reflect" how we think I meant it, because the metaphor that knowing is seeing is embedded into our ways of thinking about knowing. "See" what I mean?

She lost it when she said even if they taste the wine they may not have the same taste as you do. If that is a worry, then how could any metaphor be better? I mean how could you trust what is being used in the metaphor is exactly the same?

Ezra Ch:9 you can't unless you have justification for believing that in the context of your speech others will understand the metaphor in the same way you are intending it to be understood. Certainty of that is useless. But I think that is where her pause comes in, because of W.V.O. Quine's bunny situation and the Arguments for skepticism.

How does a metaphor refer to philosophy? I'm a doctor of philosophical sciences in Russia and do not understand what you're talking about, can your channel be about linguistics?
@billytalty7 жыл бұрын
Seriuous Mult it's all philsophy in the fields of practical epistemology, philosophy of language, and philosophy of mind; how one uses tools of language to derive the warrant for their beliefs into packets of information for other minds to receive that, apart from the context, would be nonsense bits of information. Dr. Camp is talking about her work on perspectivical imagination which tries to answer why our minds are hardwired to do metaphor or context dependant justification, and what practices we can further develop in understanding this process, in order to utilize our minds more fully in different situations.

i like the comments calling mary stupid i guess intelligence ends with the individual holding it seems nobody wants to share mary philosophy isnt twisting thing until theyre overly complex its opening up a situation, event, believe, emotion, etc and trying to understand the complexity that lies within itself unfortunately the human language can only express a certain amount of complexity and so most struggle to simplify the things were all thinking thats where philosophers come in
