Thanks for the great and informative review. After much scrimping and saving, and deliberations on which lathe to go with, I went with the current version of the 1840. It actually arrived today. Looking forward to putting it to use. Glad to hear yours is still a source of joy after all these years. I hopeine will be as well. Thanks again for the video. Great stuff!

Loved the review, I have the 1224 and love it, wish I could have afforded the 1840, but will save up and get one down the road. Really am impressed with your videos and the information you share on the specific tool you're using, speed your turning at, etc. I always learn tons. Please keep up the Great work!

Thank you, Jack! Just be aware, the newer model of this lathe does not have a rotating head stock. They changed it about a year ago.

Thanks - yes I know that. The head stock on my current lathe does rotate but I hardly use it. In fact, if when I to put the tenon in chuck the hole previously holding the wood screw does not align with the tail stock perfectly, then the head stock is put under pressure and oscillates slightly.

Hi Phil! Been a suscriber for quite a while now and just stumbled onto this review. Very good job. Upon my retirement I treated myself to a new JET 16x40EVS. Slightly smaller but with all the same features as the 18 inch with the exception of a 1.5 hp dc drive 110v power system. I certainly love it and it is quite nice to be able to turn a dial to select the speed need for the task at hand. Keep up the turning videos. I do love them and have picked up quite a few ideas from you. Again thanks for what you do and KEEP ON TURNING!!

I had an old Delta lathe for 20 years and made lots of great stuff with it and more importantly, had a great time with it. Then I decided I wanted to turn larger items than that 12" swing would allow. I was 69 years old and wondered if it was a wise decision to spend that much money on a lathe I may not get to use for very long. I can tell you, I love every minute on it and am really glad I spent the money. Thanks, Tom, for watching and commenting!

Hi Phil. These were on sale on cyber Monday for $2209. Next year maybe,Hard to decide Laguna or Jet! If you wanted to change the position of the wheel on the quill You could take the wheel off and grind a new flat on the spindle. Tighten the locking screws down on the new flat and the handle on the wheel will be in the new position.

Thanks for the review Phil. Yours is the first I've seen on Jet's latest generation of lathes. I run a small JWL 1221VS and it's great, just not big enough. I'm wanting to upgrade soon. I just haven't decided which brand to go with. Most lathes come out of Taiwan and lots from the very same factory regardless of brand. Maybe, I analyze too much LOL
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you CAN analyze too much, Charlie! If so, I do it too. I thought I had decided on getting the Laguna 18/36. I read every word I could find on it and watched several videos. Then, Jet came out with the new generation and It just seemed to me to be better. The rotating head stock did it for me, I think. That and I read one of Laguna's own comments that said don't let anything hit the bed or legs because they could break! Didn't sound like they had much confidence in their own machine so I wouldn't either. In any event, I'm very happy with my choice and I wish you well in your quest for a larger lathe. I'd love to know what you eventually decide on.

Thanks Phil for the great review. I am just getting into wood turning and am researching lathes. The Jet 1640 EVS has everything in would ever need, but the 2 HP, 220 V 3Ph motor is very tempting and I think I will spring for the extra couple of hundred dollars for that feature. From what I understand the 3ph motor maintains torque at lower speeds to avoid stalling. On another note: I wonder if you were to use the shorter Morris tape that came with the lathe, if the position of the handle on the wheel would be in a better position for you to eject the live center.Thanks again for a very comprehensive review

Thanks for the the in depth over view, Those pinch blocks in the banjo are the best!! This is great news to me, I’m looking at a larger lathe and jet was in the running because the headstock can rotate for outboard turning, the pinch blocks don’t mar your tool rest post, it may take a little getting used to but in the end your better off. You may want to get some contact cement to glue the rubber mat to the headstock, as you said, a minor annoyance. For my needs I’m going to probably buy a jet.

@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop

A Shopsmith is a fine machine but most of them do have kind of a fast "low" speed. You will find it necessary to ensure a piece is in balance before you start. A bandsaw will come in handy for that but a handsaw can work, too. 😊

Thank you, Mark! Be aware, the newer 1840 lathes do not include a pivoting head stock. It still slides but does not rotate. They lowered the price because of this. There is a local dealer that sells several different brands of equipment like this at a discount. He's located in Auburn, Washington but I can't remember the name!

Howdy Stephen! In this review I had a few nit-picky things I mentioned. I used double-faced tape to stick down the rubber mat so that's fixed. I got used to everything else, no issues at all. Each day I walk into the shop and see the lathe and it puts a smile on my face. No regrets! If you are considering this lathe, you should know they have revised it. It no longer has a swivel head stock. They have lowered the price to reflect that. Thank you for watching! Phil

Great to hear. I have a smaller Jet 1221 that I enjoy using. I'm looking to a bigger lathe so I can turn larger pieces and it would be nice to stay with Jet since I'm already used to the touchy speed control. As far as the swivel head stock, that will not be a problem for me. Thanks again for the information.

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Awkward moment here, hate to say it. Had to cancel the order because I missed the voltage in the description. Cannot wire 220 to the unattached garage 30 feet from the breaker panel. Stepped down a notch and ordered the 1640 half horse. Most of the great features and will definitely fit. You'll be fine and you'll have a great lathe! I think all of the newer technology allows you to think about your piece rather than the lathe, which for me is a big plus! Phil

Thanks, Fred! I made it for my wife's office where she used to work. It's just a box made from 3/4" plywood with a drawer mounted with full extension drawer slides. When she retired I brought it home and mounted it under my Rockwell lathe. When I got this Jet lathe I just installed 2x4's on the shelf ledges in the stand and set the box on top of those. It fit nicely side to side but there was still room on top so I built another drawer unit to set on top of it. Both pieces hang over the back of the 2x4 shelf by quite a bit, at least a foot. I don't have any measurements, just make it whatever size fits in your configuration.

Hi Phil, good to meet you here. It's a good review, currently there are offers on this machine in the uk. At the mo I have the 1440 VSM with bed extension and the outboard tool rest. I do use the bed extension but not yet for the purpose intended. It looks like the legs and bed maybe universal and thus the extension may well fit the 1840. The 1440 is a Reeves drive. I have no criticism of it save that the low speed of 350 is sometimes not low enough if you have a piece that is out of balance. But then you and the machine 'dance' for few minutes until it gets in balance. In your experience what is the big advantage of EVS save for low speed and reverse? Last but not least, I have noted not one but four sand o flex's on your wall! Presumably different grits, or are you a collector?! Have fun, keep turning.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Ray! The lathe that this one replaced was Reeves drive. It was a big step up from my former 4 speed, change the belt on the pulley's, type. I loved that lathe but it was only 12" capacity and I wanted something larger. Other than, as you said, the lower speed and reverse, EVS is sooo much quieter. Also, being able to adjust your speed without having the lathe running is a big advantage. Also, the lower possible speeds help with the kind of stuff I like to turn, much of which will never come into balance. And, I simply would not want to do without reverse. Makes sanding so much more efficient and even possible with some of my pieces. Additionally, zero maintenance. No lubing the pulleys or adjusting tension. It just makes turning so much more enjoyable to me. I do have four Sand O Flexes visible, each with different grits. My most used is 180 grit which I use for all bark-on pieces. I also have probably another dozen of them and lots of refills. Not a collector but a user. I was a boy scout and like to be prepared! Phil

Wow, that's a big step, Tommy, good luck with starting a new hobby! I always recommend buying a used lathe of a size capable of turning whatever you decide to turn. The advantage of used is, they often come with accessories, chisels, etc. which can be a major investment if purchased separately. Any name brand will do.

It's a great lathe, isn't it, Stan! I thought I would go with the low range speed setting but turns out, I went with high. I seldom turn over 1200 rpm, though, so not sure why I did. My previous lathe had legs that the shelf behind the lathe rested on. The 1840 doesn't have that so I had to add legs to the front of the shelf. It works well and I like having a place that collects most of the waste and a place to lay my tools. The downside is, I would love to be able to get around the back side of the lathe and can't. Oh well, can't have everything! Thanks for watching and for your comment, Stan! Phil

Great review. When you the compressed air to turn down the speed, it made me laugh. Not at you but at the touchyness of the dial. That could be a small problem. Perhaps a dust cover type add on would solve the possible problem.

Nice review Phil (maybe a little too nice). If I let my wife watch this video, she wouldn't understand any of it. So, you are now going to have to explain to her why I need $3000 for a new lathe. I bought one about the same size (18x46) with outboard turning capability about 4 years ago for about $1500. I thought about doing a KZbin review on it, but I would have to bleep out half of the audio to keep it family friendly. In short, you found 3 things about your Jet lathe that were a little irksome, but I would be hard pressed to find 3 things about my lathe that are not a pain. I'm not going to mention the name brand, but I will say that I wish I had watched your video first. Instead, I watched a video of a guy comparing a Jet lathe to the brand I got (which sold me on the choice I made). Anyways, love your videos and the work you do. You always seem to turn out a nice piece from something most people would throw on the burn pile. : )

It's a shame that your lathe didn't live up to your expectations. I hate when that happens! I actually love this lathe and have overcome, with little effort, the shortcomings I mentioned in this review. The good thing is, they've dropped the price on this one. The bad thing is, they removed the rotating headstock. It still slides, just doesn't rotate. Still a good lathe, I'm sure.

I was/am considering the Grizzly 18" lathe thats a little less money. I own the little Jet mini 1014 and am very impressed with the quality of that tiny thing vs all the other mini lathes Ive looked at that Im thinking of maybe just sticking with Jet even though they are a little more expensive but you typically get what you pay for. Im also considering the Laguna 1836. That new Jet 1840 sure is a good looking piece of equipment. You still satisfied with it? Yes, Mark, the spindle will stop using that method. I would say, from full stop of the dial, flip the power switch and it takes almost 1/4 turn to get the spindle to move. If you want the speed knob to stay in place take the knob off and put a o-ring on the shaft. You may need more than one to make it thick enough. Then put the knob back on and push it in as far as you want before you tighten the set screw. You can easily adjust the tension by how far you push the knob on. Works great.

Phil, I'm addicted to your videos and am preparing to purchase my first lathe next month. I'm not one to jump in and spend $$$$ on something that I am just getting started in so I am looking at a Jet JWL-1221VS 12 inch w/variable speed to get my feet wet and then see where I go from there. I had a question regarding the headstock bearing that you had problems with; have you had more than one issue with it and have you found any resolution as to how to extend the life? Do you feel that by turning the rough blanks that you start out with may cause excessive torque or stress on the bearing? Maybe more HP is needed in the drive motor? Have you had any issue with the live center bearings? Sorry for all the questions but you seem to have a good insight on the Jet Lathe and so I hoped you could answer these nagging questions. Thanks again for your great videos and I hope that you are doing well.

I see you got some of your questions answered. This lathe has large, double bearings so I don't think that or the 2HP are an issue. I just think maybe the bearings weren't pressed on the shaft far enough. I think it is fixed, now. The live center also has large double bearings and no issues at all.

By accessories, Rex, if you mean add-ons to the lathe itself, none. They only make about three and none of them interest me. I don't think you can go wrong with the current model of this lathe or the PM2020. They are both great machines.

We had checked the tech-parameters on the Jettools.com also, but doesn't find too much differences. Could you specify something through your "lenses"? It could be very helpful. Why do you choose this one and not the inferior model? Thank you again, and waiting your reply.

Hi Zoltan! The main difference is the first number. That is the diameter of a piece that can be turned. So, I can turn an 18" diameter on mine, by 40" long. That alone probably would not have made me choose the 1840. My local dealer sells blemished tools for less. I got mine, with a slight tear in the label, for $1,000.00 less than retail. Easy choice, huh? I hope that answers your question and I thank you for watching and commenting! Phil

Hi Zoltan! Well, you would think Jet would get it right on their own web site, but they didn't. The headstock on the 1840 slides and rotates. I don't know why they didn't put an X there. Outboard turning is possible on the 1840 by sliding the headstock all the way to the end of the lathe. Then attach a bed extension to the lower mounting points provided by Jet and that is where you will put your tool rest. Everything that is missing an X should have one. Believe me, this lathe can do everything the 1640 can do but with more power and size. Phil
