I use Sorby spiraling/texturing tool to decorate the top and bottom of this platter. Color added with Tombow markers. Lots of "Firsts" on this piece. Visit my Facebook Page for previous projects: / phils-woodshop-1470648... Thanks for watching and please subscribe!

Thought I would watch some of your older videos whilst you recuperate Phil, I know you are super critical but that came out great, actually looks like it has a fair bit of age to it, in fact if it wasn't so crisp, maybe a few knocks and dents, it could easily go as a period piece. I've set out trying to make a beer tankard out of a 5" diameter log and ended up with a nice 3/4" x 10" dowel! LOL A ton of wood chips on the floor and my head hung low! We've all been there I guess but as long as we learn something I think it's OK! I love this bowl and you must be very proud of making it! Thanks for the video! Tom

I think the plater is beautiful and the colour (yes that is how you spell it) looks good. Although the green is not as good as the blue, it separates the blue which you could not do if you put another vibrant colour in. With texture you need the green. Phil, it really came out beautiful! The color was a nice touch! Was that a solid piece of birch wood? Or Birch plywood? I have a texturing tool like yours and use it more than I realize. You can get different patterns by simply rotating the tool left, right or even straight on. You did great in the design of the bowl, my only recommendation would be instead of poly which yellows over time use spray lacquer for musical instruments. I have hand sprayed it with a spray gun and the finish is phenomenal! There are two types of lacquer used, the one to use is Mohawk M610-40; Nitrocellulose Wood Lacquer for musical instruments providing unique depth of gloss, superior color and gloss retention, adhesion, and exceptional cold check resistance. Advantages: 1. Easy to use, no reduction necessary. 2. Good spray flow leveling properties. 3. Alcohol and scuff resistant finish. 4. Excellent rubbing and polishing characteristics. 5. Minimum shrinkage on aging. 6. Superior cold check resistance (cracking) - passes 20 cold check cycles on 1/8” plywood, 5 coats. This is what I use for items requiring a hi gloss hands free finish for show pieces. The other spray finish is; Minwax oil based spray can lacquer M103-0500 I hope that I haven’t insulted you with this, but you asked for opinions and well that’s mine… Take care Phil! P.S. Shellac is the best hand finish, yet and again my opinion…

Well Phil, for all you put yourself down at times, you truly are an artist with such an innate understanding of wood. The platter turned out beautifully and I hope your reticence doesn’t put you off doing a coloured and textured piece in the future. Since stumbling across your channel fairly recently I have become addicted to watching. I must admit I do chuckle, but not because I think you are doing anything wrong (I’m no woodturner), but simply your wonderfully droll sense of humour helps lift my spirits and take my mind off the mindless hatred of the war here in Europe. I absolutely love the end result. I’m a commercial artist and I would recommend your using either Prismacolor or Copic markers for your next color endeavor. These are a higher quality alcohol-based marker and they have a very large assortment of colors available. You will get a much deeper saturation of color if you color the wood before the sanding sealer. If you do one coat of sanding sealer, then color you can control the depth of color and be able to add fine details. In either case spraying on the polyurethane finish is a very good idea. Take care.

Love the finished piece Phil and the colours (correct spelling) compliment each other. I think the texturing looks great too but you would have had a tighter spiral effect if you had reduced the speed. 400 rpm sounds slow enough but so far out from centre the speed is a lot faster. Love all your videos and wish I had half of your talent. I am 70 from across the pond and have been turning for 2 years learning from masters like yourself. Take care and keep the videos coming.

Phil - Love the plate, texture and colors(U.S. spelling of colors) . Request: would like you to demonstrate how you would support this plate and other turnings for final trimming of the base. As a relatively new turner that would be most helpful. Thanks for your sharing of your expertise. Johnnie C
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, John! When I turn platters I almost always use a recess so there may not be further trimming of the base. If I had used a tenon, I would have used one of my flat, round blocks of wood and some non-slip material to hold the piece against the chuck, tailstock support and just removed the tenon on the lathe. I show this in many bowl turning videos, probably a couple hundred times, I guess. Hope that helps!

Hi There Phil, I'm just getting into turning. I bought a lathe about a year ago and just in the past month or so start using it. I turned an Elm burl bowl for my first project. It turned out better then I had expected. I think I'm going to like the lathe, A Lot!!! Your video's are very inspiring to me. I always look forward to your next one! I haven't got into texturing yet, but I do like the looks of it. Once I get a little better I'll have to give it a shot! Thanks!! Oh, and I think I like the color too, I'll have to give that a try as well. Bob

Single board, Hubert. This is a piece I've had for years. I bought a bunch of hardwood from a cabinet shop and it had a lot of really wide boards in the lot. Still have a few. 😊

The Sorby tool company was founded by my ancestors (5 and 6 generations ago). I still bear the Sorby name. It is nice to see their tools in use (even though I think the company is now more Lockwood than Sorby). All the best.

This is a very popular piece among my visitors, Doug. My daughter has already claimed it but I told her she will have to wait until I'm gone. I enjoy the comments from my visitors. I like to keep it around to show that I can do something besides what I really enjoy doing. 😊

Phil I guess by now you know i'm an open and honest guy and I love the platter it looks fantastic great finish and a smashing piece of wood but I feel that texturing wood that perfect is not right texture should be natural like most of the wood you work with adding texture to wood that good is like ripping a brand new pair of jeans on purpose but each to there own and your honesty speaks volumes about your character and yes god hates a man with no balls.....

Well, like the piece is titled, Steven, "Learn from my mistakes!" LOL! It is a great piece of wood, however, to me, the best pieces are the ones with bark on and natural defects. I felt something as "plain" as this piece of wood lends itself to a little tinkering. But, great minds like ours can differ and still have mutual respect. Thanks for your great comment! Phil

Phil. Call me a pedantic Englishman (or forgive my ignorance - whichever is appropriate!), but I'm sure you regularly use a 3/8" Bowl Gouge. At the start, one of your "firsts" was that you were going to use a smaller gouge. You then proceeded to use a half-inch!! It was admittedly a long time ago, but when I went to school 1/2 was always bigger than 3/8!!! Regardless, it turned out beautiful (as always!)
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, you would, of course, be correct, Phil! But, you may be mis-hearing or mis-recalling. I almost always use a 5/8" gouge. About the only thing I use the 3/8" for is removing the tenon or maybe some fine detail work, occasionally. I'm glad you like this piece, thank you! 😊

We both had a lots of first's on this one. This is the first time I viewed this video, I know you made it a while back. I too want to do a platter some day. It will help to muster enough courage to turn it. I surely hope my first platter turns out as beautiful as yours, but there is a fat chance it will. I will be like a scared rabbit but I will tackle it too. You were pretty calm on this project. You showed no apprehension in the way you made all your decisions. Every cut was the right one. 💡 KEEP ON TURNING

Thank you! I always recommend buying used. Get one that will accommodate whatever size you want to turn. The advantage is, they often come with tools and accessories that can cost more than the lathe if purchased separately. 😊

I use water-based dye quite a bit ... I apply it to the bare wood, let it dry (sometimes use a heat gun if I'm in a hurry), then hit it with a couple of coats of de-waxed spray shellac from a rattle can. That way I avoid runs/smearing, and can apply whatever finish I want over it. I have the same Sorby tool ... most of the time it just sits in the drawer. I do use it to create rosette-like decoration on small boxes, etc. but have never tried it on bigger stuff. Nice looking piece ... I'm sure your wife will appreciate the effort you put into it!

Hi Phil. Another re-watch of an oldie for me. Love the texture and hope one day to be able to buy the Sorby Texturing tools, but still feeling the sting of the cost of the new lath! :-) Sooo - I will stick with the natural turnings until I somehow manage to convince my bride that I "Really Need" those texturing tools. As you say -- "By for now" Stay safe - Dennis

Cool, thanks, Dennis! I've got the texturing tools but I use them so seldom that, for me, it was probably a wasted expense. Still, if you can convince the bride, you'll be ready for anything! 😊

New Turner with a hobby mini lathe with just belt movement to change speed. Love your presentation style. Just made my first bowl....well until I took the bottom out when removing the tenon, oops,, so really pleased with your decision to leave the recess. Also so glad you defined the blue and green with a groove...appears the old addage is as true in turning as it is in fashion...Blue and green should never be seen without a colour in-between.... now back to your crotch and bark turning...Best Richard Cardiff Wales GB

Hiya Phil! I was going to suggest after adding color, a very light sanding over the scrolling to show off the texture. But you final result looks amazing and I wouldn't change a thing. Phil, you're a little hard on yourself buddy ! That looks great, especially with all the 1st in the project. The texture is a really nice addition especially with the colors. The blue really seems to pop against the green with the texture. For something you don't do a lot of, you sure as hell did a marvelous job ! Thank You for always doing such nice projects & telling us what you are doing as you do it. Another beautiful piece !
