Love your videos Phil. I just got my first lathe and you are my favorite teacher here! Don't be too hard on your self. I laughed when you said : "you're probably all laughing at me right now". I laughed at your comment, definitely not at your work, it's an amazing piece of art and gives me loads of inspiration.

Phil, you have NO need to doubt yourself & your woodturning. It was hard wood & different wood but your approach to your woodturning & your desire to expose the beauty within a piece of wood, regardless of its size & shape, leaves little room for doubt that you will succeed in producing a 'thing of beauty'. An 'artist ' creates apiece because THEY WANT TO, not because someone places a set requirement on. Be bold & resolute using your skills, which are abundant, produce your piece then let other people decide if they like it or don't like. As long as YOU, the artist - woodturner likes it that is what 's most important. That being the case I am sure that the majority of people who view it are going to like it & most of those people are, like me, going to love it. Your a great woodturner & don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Different for you, sure it was but it turned out to be a delightful 'emerging goblet. Well done my friend. Stay safe & well & keep them coming. Don

We love the contrast between “this is kind of what I started with” at the bottom and “this is what you can do if you really apply yourself” at the top. And the colour is just amazing - so rich and chocolatey.

My wife and I go and dig out iron wood stumps out of the ground. What looks like old rotting wood is an amazing treasure every time I cut a new pice. Some are brown like youe some are almost black and occasionally we get some that shimers like gold. Awsome job thanks for sharing.

Phil you got one thing wrong: me laufhing at you. On the contrary: I truly admire that you made the brave decision on trying to go out of your comfort zone with turning a goblet. Especially with that kind of very hard wood. I had my own share of going out of my comfort zone so I exactly know how it feels. The grain of the wood looks awesome. For me a goblet is never easy to make. So congratulations on this project! Awesome.

Well Phil. You did a marvelous job. There were a few moments where I wanted to give you an attitude adjustment for your opinions of your ideas and self doubt . You ARE an artist no matter what you think about yourself. Yes the wood is the show but like a potterer that manipulates the clay - the wood is in your capable hands. Beautiful stunning creation

Your goblet for not having faith in your spindle turning method turned out GREAT. You didn't need a blueprint for it. EXCELLENT as always. YOU reminded us when you were sanding the end of the goblet you were talking about sanding lightly . Too much sanding will cause friction of the paper heating the wood which may cause the wood to weaken and the splits may get bigger. Good job!!!! KEEP ON TURNING

Good evening, Phil. I like it. The wood as amazing. Very glad you settled on the shape, it is exactly correct. I may have used the detail tool and created a ring to form the base of the cup as it sets on the log. That may not look 'emerging' but that's my thought. Thumbs up, my friend.

Beautiful piece Phil! Thank you for sharing. Here in southeast Indiana our ironwood is also known as blue beech. Like your piece, it is a very hard and dense wood. Now that I've viewed your video; I have some confidence that I can turn the couple of pieces that are sitting in a corner of my shop. Thanks again!

phil i think it looks just beautiful brother . desert iron wood huh . when i was a boy i worked with my uncle in the woods he rn pulp wood to the paper mill in manistee michigan . what a wonderful place that was as a boy . stunk to high heaven but such a cool place . a big tractor we called them skidders would come and when i say big i mean big . my uncle had a 11 speed flat bed international semi truck and the top of the tires on this skidder were taller then the cab on his truck . sorry got off point lol . my point was my uncle got into some iron wood with his chainsaw and the sparks just flew out of it it being the first time i ever saw iron wood i thought he hit a nail . he cut for a while then stopped to sharpen the saw . i asked him about the nail and why he would keep sawing through it . he laughed and said no buddy its iron wood . it gets its name from the sparks it throws when sawing it . it is caused by minerals in the ground . now i dont know how much of that story is true on how it gets its name but thats what he told me and well thats what i know about iron wood lol . so if it is iron wood you have there it is a beautiful piece . love the way you made it look and sorry for such a long winded comment lol . i kinda miss my youth and wish i would have payed more attention to what i was being tought back then . sure would know alot more and be alot better for it now . bless ya brother again beautiful work phil . bless ya buddy

I know how you feel when you don't think you have good grip on the part but jump in and giderdunn!!!! If you mess up, don't show the video. Nobody will know. This piece turned out splendidly. You should be proud of your work, your followers love it. Keep-on-keep'n on!!!

HA! Don't show it, huh? I wouldn't have any videos to share if that was the case, Grampa! LOL! I don't mind showing my goofs. Maybe lots of folks have goofs too and we can all commiserate. I am proud of pieces like this because I really taxed my skills and came up with something respectable. I'm really glad you like it, thank you! Phil

Ugly wood outside, beautiful inside. You made it emerge not only as a goblet (or egg cup?), but also as a beautifully finished conversation piece. The contrast of the rough and smooth, weathered outer surface and rich interior wood makes for a very nice end result. Well done in spite of your being unsure.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
