I like the music in the background. Perfect for watching a viking ship...

Interesting that you decided to visit Chicago. This is the 2nd replica Viking ship to visit Chicago. The first was in 1893 where it sailed from Bergen, Norway to Chicago for the 1893 World's Fair. Afterwards, it sailed down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. The ship was christened "Viking".

To ro a ship like this you need minimum a 100 men. That is just to ro it. then you need to steer and do other things as well. This ship is built on the west coast of Norway. Close to a city called Haugesund. The lokal king at that time ( 980-1030 ) had over 30 ships like this. at that time it was many kings in Norway. so you can imagen how that will have been looking if a fleet of this ships coming up the river. More then 3500 men. The vikings use to drag their ships a cross land if needed to continue the voyage. They was peoples of all trades, worriers, black smiths, carpenters and so on.

What size engine does it have?Because there's no rowers, and sail's flat up until 1:53 or so. The refueling comment and it backing away from the quay comfirms that.

They were required by Maritime Law to have backup engines. Other videos state they had two John Deere diesel engines around 35- HP. Each. Also navigation and radio and GPS on board were required.

She is motorsailing, I think for pilotage pourposes and narrowness of seaways and traffic.

I gotcha. I think later I found out she was trying to catch up with a bunch of other sailing ships for a Tall Ships Festival.

Hårfagre = fairhaired. The "å" is pronounced as the o in go.

Cool, is the ship motor powered because I didn't spot any oars when the sails were down?
@PhilBaumhardt7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it has a motor as well, which in a way is kinda disappointing but for practicality and safety only makes sense.

And it has a nice quiet diesel engine.

This is not a real viking ship, it is too big and too wide. It has been modified to fit maretime code hence it is a mordern take. Try looking Sea stallion from glendeloch up, that ship is a true replica.
@fixento5 жыл бұрын
I doubt maritime code has much to do with it, her beam is more for stability and room for the crew shelters because you bet the crew is not living on the decks.

Roskilde 6 was found in Denmark and was 37 meters long. Ormen Lange is thought to be about 40-45 metres long while this ship is 35 meters.
@NorseGraphic4 жыл бұрын
It's too short, actually. Lacks around a couple of meters. Keep in mind they had around 100 or more people on the longships. You don't go raiding a village with 35 peeps...

They must have more than two shafts and diesel engines on that boat just like the Vikings did.
