Watched it in its entirety. You sound like my Dad back in the 50's working on Tube sets in his TV shop. "Botch" was one of his favorite words....Slightly different than "bodge " which you use to indicate work by an amateur or unskilled person...But it meant the same thing....I have done a few bodge jobs myself...I'm 77 and I still learn something from almost everyone of your Restorations...

Fallout 4 TV with being serviced with fallout 4 diagnostic equipment; right down to the burred flathead screws over the cat's eye cover plate. It is what works after nuclear war. Great videos by the way. All these vintage sets should be restored just for historical reasons if anything.

Mildly interesting thing about those black tubulars. The ones where one lead has a swollen base? That is actually a thin brass pipe through which they squirted in the oil. Then when they soldered in the wire, the flux in the solder would migrate into the capacitor, making it leaky right from the factory. So much for the great old USA quality parts. Broken by design. I generally replace them all, even the non-critical bypass ones.

21:39 the static/crinkling noise reminds me of AM radio, it even makes that noise when you are tuned into a station. But I have always had this feeling that in a few years they would be turning the AM frequently off due to digital radio and streaming services like Spotify and Apple music, as well as podcasts taking over....

LOL!!.. 25:45 that was weird..lol! :-D the picture is looking good,,,I remember those Predictas... years ago I worked on those sets as a tech in a friend's repair shop .. I remember those CRT's in those things.. I changed one for some customers a couple times or so, and that cr-tube felt so light and fragile, and maybe the slightest bump would make it implode into a nuclear glass shrapnel-bomb... my friend would say with wide eyes, "Be sooo careful with that!.." when I would do those jobs. I never had one break ..whew! ;-)

The Predicta the epitome of planned obsolescence. Despite this they had a cool look and gained a cult following back in the late 1960s. I saw many 17ers and 19ers cut up as parts donors to repair and restore them. There were also console sets in the line that were also used as donors. As cool as these sets were their warranty problems almost bankrupted Philco.

It looked like the pins in the original sockets were stretched open kind of like a "C" after crimping they would have been a "o" shape. I was surprised you didn't try crimping them closed a little. Would have saved a lot of work soldering in a new socket.

I'm wondering how long that sand resistor, with the taps, is going to last? I've had NOS sand resistors go bad just sitting on the shelf. I've also heard that those network/couplate things can cause trouble in these Predicta sets. Apparently the couplates used different internal part values in different production runs.

Speaking of the heat issues with these sets...I swear I saw someone...may have been Phil on Phil's old radios site where he installed a typical modern computer cooling fan to cool the PC board on his barber pole. I'm going to be doing one in the near future, and it seems maybe to be a good idea. If those couplets go bad, it's a real pain. Would be interested to see your idea for tube shields? Assume mayber cardboard or just regular metal shields??
@RODALCO2007
@RODALCO2007 9 жыл бұрын
ScottTV1962 I have done that on vintage equipment. Often the fan doesn't have to run at top 12 V speed. Often 8 to 10 Volts is adequate to move the air around and the fans noise is very quiet too at the lower voltage.

I'm genuinely curious... When dealing with a set this old, with this... low quality... of a parts selection, does it pay to test each cap? Obviously, it pays for KZbin, in terms of making an interesting troubleshooting and repair video, but I mean in general repair. Is the time taken to test each cap and decide whether it is worth replacing more costly than just getting the complete set of caps and just going to town on it?

what's the value of that Glass Capacitor? is there any place i can get myself one? the reason i ask you this shango066 is because i acquired a Radio years ago, it was an eveready radio it didn't come with a manual, fairly small it plugs in, when i opened it up i found a capacitor i don't remember what reading it had, but i know the tubes were bad, the casing was falling apart,warped, it had one electrolytic and a waxpaper capacitor, the radio is basically in need of quite a bit of work, just in case if you reply back, my skype is sonicthehedgehogvy
@OlegKostoglatov
@OlegKostoglatov 9 жыл бұрын
Sonic Dash You don't need to use glass capacitors in an average broadcast band tube radio, you can but even as surplus they would be expensive and there would be nothing to be gained by using them. Wax capacitors can be replaced by polyester film caps, and ceramic caps on occasion, you can use the bright yellow ones with the axial leads or the radial lead types like Shango was using with the red or brown glazed exterior.

+Sonic “Ghost” Dash Glass caps are very stable BUT also a waste of tax payer dollars just like everything else military related especially the training in radio and electronics, Yeah you learn how to service and repair equipment BUT it's military equipment, Not too many civilian agencies use military gear in the US, so yeah a gross waste of money on the governments part. You will be surprised at how many ham operators out there have military radio training and no absolutely nothing about modern civilian / commercial radio and electronics, but since they have that training they all think they are the gods of radio and electronics..

IMHO there. Is nothing wrong in making a bigger capacitor out of two, if you don’t have the exact value. Given all the other infelicities of Philco, this mild kludge doesn’t even matter. IMHO.
