I think some albums show his chops . Power metal and CFH definitivly show his chops , schizophrenic performance . Vulgar is like an extension of that but morphed in his own , more gritty and tough Still the shriek and the brightness still there of previous years . Just more mature . Far beyond driven showed a more " Suffocation " and hardcore kind of stuff vocal approach TGST showed a more dark , bluesy , and more grindcore / black metal kind of vocals ... As strange as it sounds beign more extreme and depth it showed more range than FBD . FBD , and i took a little time to like , even.it has planet caravan in all , but its kind of the lower , mid part of his range , except Sheddin skin , throes of rejection , few stuff on Use my third arm and im broken when it have kind of rest of old school higher resonance . TGST , you have more modulation between the low / mid register and Upped belting and the higher schrieking . And Ballads obviously And thats unique case falsetto in his career in Pantera ( no , his Judas prietesque singing was full extended / mixed voice with high larynx technique , this is NOT falsetto or even pure headbvoice either ) in floods , but in a disturbing way . Reinventing the steel show case more his matured raspy voice with the years of experience pushing extreme while backing into a more old school register again . And doing great range . Even its more distorted and direct like Vulgar , if you listen well on headphones , especially in the layers behind, he did have the brightness back of his earlier years . Theres few high notes in that album .

I believe he first started dabbling with heroin slightly before Far Beyond Driven or while recording it. Just listen to his voice and the lyrics. The lyrics for Shedding Skin and Hard Lines and Sunken Cheeks says it all. By the time TGSTK came out he was beyond experimenting. I don't think he was full blown addicted until during the end of Pantera. He couldn't afford to be addicted touring the World. Its part of the reason he overdosed in Dallas in 96. He had no damn tolerance, and he was easily able to finish that tour up. Something he couldn't do if he was a full blown addict by then. I believe he was just using on and off recreationally. Now in the early 00s after Pantera split when he wrote the Down II and Superjoiny Ritual albums he was a full blown addict. Something he was able to maintain by recording at his home. Im not exactly sure weather Down nor Superjoint toured the world around this period. If not, than it's partly do to his addiction. Not considering that most of his band mates were also addicted to heroin and various other drugs then. It was the only way to take away the pain. And he wrote some of the most relatable lyrics then too in regards to drug addiction. Just analyze Stone the Crow back when he was recreationally using and from Ghost of Mississippi when he was full blown there's no going back now. He lays it all down in a great interview he did with Layola University in New Orleans. He describes how and why he started using. Described a typical day in the height of his addiction. Phil wasn't innocent by any means but what a lot of ppl fail to mention is the Abbott brothers alcoholic addiction. The two didn't mix, the brothers just loved to be the life of the party. You had to drink if you hung out with them. They also had tons of hanger ons. So Phil isolated himself which only did it's part in estranging the band. I honestly believe it was a lack of communication during this period that prevented them from going on. Reading Rex's book helped put this period into perspective for me. The brothers were devastated that Phil kept wanting to do his side projects, then Rex even left to join down. But Rex would still join the with Rebel meets Rebel , just not with Damageplan. Phil has always been known to be unhinged and to say some wild shit wild being inebriated during this period. So he said some shit that the media spun naturally. Now weather the Abbott Brothers took it to heart or not, who knows? I believe that Vinny did and even more so after his brothers untimely death. The fact of the matter is, is that they all used to be brothers back in the trenches when they were just a mere local DFW band. The had been touring non stop over the last 10yrs and they all needed a break from one another. So Vinny Paul may of took it personal, I believe Dike always held onto the possibility of Pantera reuniting again once the time is right. Phil tried to reach out to them, but whoever was managing the situation wouldn't let them talk. It's easy to point the finger here, buy by any means it wasn't Phil's fault. A lot of variables came into play and the band was burnt out simply put. No one could of imagined what would happen to Dime could ever happen. It's all so tragic in hindsight. It's bs what that pos did, he took away one of the kindest most down to earth talented metal musicians of all time. I can vouch first hand just how cool Dime was from a fans point of view. I'm fortunate to be from Dallas. I was 19yrs old, it was the summer of 03. My friends and I ventured to some random pool hall in Arlington, Tx. One of my friends was meeting up with someone there. We walk in and lo and beyond it's Dime, he was just chilling by himself. I'm sure the majority of ppl were already used to him being there. He literally lived 2 miles away. Anyways I didn't want to bother him, so my friend casually walks up and his whole demeanor changed. Here he was honestly he was drunk af, he looked somber and to me it looked like he had been stressing for quite awhile. I mean he had no entourage nothing whatsoever. So my friend confronts him and asks for an autograph and I'll never forget it. He busted out a sharpie and was like hell yeah boys I know y'all have some Pantera shit for me. I know one of y'all better have too. I never ran so fast in my life. Forunately for me I had taken my whole CD case out of my car and took it with me in my friend's car as we went to Arlington. I grabbed the first Pantera cd I saw, which was this album The Great Southern Trendkill. He signed our shit, we thanked him and went on our way. I immediately went back into my friends car to wait on him to do whatever he was doing there. About 5-10 min later came Dime staggering drunk stumbling to his ride. I believe it was an all black suburban. He was all by himself and I yelled out Dimebag you're the shit man! I honestly probably could of went up to him and had a decent conversation. But I really didn't want to bother the man. He did respond to me when I yelled out to him. That was my fortunate little encounter with the man. He honestly was all about his fans. Afterall he apparently always had a marker on him to sign shit for ppl. He wasn't an egotistical stereotypical rockstar. He easily could of told us to fuck off. Since he was all by himself he didn't have a bodyguard or an entourage to tell us to fuck off either. He truly realized how much it ment for a fan to meet their metal heroes. He just so happened to be from the same area as myself. It was truly epic af, they only one that I've failed to meet was Phil. Somewhere during the period between Vulgar and FBD. He always be in New Orleans during their time off. Which I understandable since that's where he was from anyways. The brother and Rex would always do a couple of special random shows locally. This is how I originally got my Power Metal tape signed by all 3. My mother used to go see them all the time at the Basement club and she got that tape signed for me. I was maybe 10ish then and I remember giving her my tape and telling her please get this signed if they'll let you. Sure enough she came back with my tape signed. I remember being a but bummed out that Phil wasn't there so I couldn't get his autograph. Anyways, yes it's very tragic how this legendary band ended. I know for a fact that they would of reunited if Dike was never taken away from us.

Then I went home and listened to the TGSTK and was like ‘that song wasn’t on there!’. I had to go back a few days later and ask the store guy what he was playing. @@smashdalde9713 Well here is my take on the black album. GREAT ALBUM!!!! Some really awesome songs, and well written. Enter Sandman is catchy and the video was awesome. Sad But True was HEAVY! The B-sides were fucking killer! Stone Cold Crazy and So what? Now all of this being side if this had been a brand new band just coming out, I'd instantly be a fan. But when you say "this is Metallica?" it's a bit of a let down. More so because I was afraid of the direction they were heading in. I was stationed in Washington state when I was riding in my car (I had a bose speaker system) The DJ came on the radio station and said “roll up your windows and turn your stereo to 10, this is panteras new song Drag the Waters” The tone on that release is their best sounding ever ❤

Trendkill is so dynamic, some of the heaviest pantera songs ever, with some of the softest pantera songs ever, which in turn made the heavy hit that much harder

Their best record, by far. A journey through their darkest times, with such different tones and feelings. Definitely their most brutal, advanced and experimental work. Just listen to Dimebag's riffs for example, like in The Underground In America, his most twisted and heaviest ones.

Best metal record of all time. I can't tell you how much destruction took place in my youth to this record. We would be at a party, and if this came on, the whole demeanor of the atmosphere changed to complete chaos. Slamming beers, moshing in cars, headbutting friends, destruction of property, complete casos. Let's just say I am glad social media didn't exist this time of my life. Long live Pantera! Long live the Abbott Brothers! \m/

I feel the pain and I see it in Phil's face and voice I wish I could talk to him for 5 min and let him know we all love him (nohomo), and it has to be so hard for him, man, it almost brings me to tears seeing his reaction... GOD I MISS PANTERA SOMETHING AWFUL! I CRY LIKE A LITTLE GIRL AT TIMES WHEN I HEAR THEIR SONGS AND HOW THE SONGS USED TO MAKE ME FEEL, GODDAMN! ITS ALMOST TOO PAINFUL, BUT I LOVE THEM LIKE NO OTHER BAND EVER...JUST BECAUSE OF THE SHEER TALENT THAT IS SORELY MISSED!

From such an impressive back catalogue, I would have to say this is my favourite Pantera release - it's heavy in a way that really didn't exits before, also with a lot of beautiful atmosphere and scope. And Phil's vocals ... damn - so much emotion. It's another level here. This album was a statement (after many they had already made and cemented with previous albums); incredibly intense and with no apologies. This was Pantera warts and all.
@HankNarrowUrethra3 жыл бұрын
Always been my favourite Pantera album as a whole - absolutely devastating! A pure expression of Pantera and probably pretty apt that it reflects the darkness of Phil's problems during many of those years. The layers upon layers of haunting backing vocals just makes it absolutely amazing to listen to over and over again!
@costa70873 жыл бұрын
my favourite fucking album ever. it's a trip of feelings: starts brutal and agressive, goes groovy and nice, gets darker and atmospherically dark, then closes up again with nice groovy and heavy stuff. 100% well balanced
