The date was Saturday September 8th 1990. I was 16 years old. The Venue was called "The Ritz" in NYC (254 W 54th St) This was the original location of iconic disco club "Studio 54". The place held maybe 3,000 people? Anyway, the line up was Suicidal Tendencies headlining, Exodus, in the middle & this group from Texas called "Pantera" opening the show. (They played the Cowboys from Hell album) I never heard of them before, but immediately thought of the Ford Pantera Detomoso GT-5 & I knew it was a badass car etc. I remember thinking well, that's cool so they must be cool. So there we are standing out back behind the place trying to see if we could meet some of the bands before the show etc & hearing the sound check. I heard these guys jamming & knew right away that I needed to be in there to see these guys. I didn't play guitar at that time yet, but I knew what I was hearing was "correct" (if that makes any sense) My buddies were like "whatever man, we are here to see Exodus & Suicidal" I said ok see ya later & went inside. Not 10 minutes later the show started & before the first song had ended, there were my friends standing next to me. Looking at the pit, feeling the energy of the performance, watching Phil jump around like a madman along with Vinny, Diamond Darrell (at that time) & Rex do their thing. That was it. We were hooked. The rest is history & anytime after that when PanterA came to town to play a show, we were there. We talk about shows we went to back in the day & realize that we are so thankful to be teenagers during those years & witnessing once in a lifetime musical acts. Thank you for that experience.

I was semi-homeless, broke and trying to learn to play the guitar. I spent what little money I had, borrowed a friend's car while he was at work and I drove to Tower Records and bought the Vulgar cassette. I still have it.

I had been playing in metal bands for a couple years in my teen years and had learned so much from Pantera. I eventually made my way into hardcore and I was so bored by what was there, everything sounded like metal for beginners. I would eventually start a project with a friend that after a gig, he and I knew that traditional hardcore wasn't where we belonged. We would replace our singer and drummer and renamed ourselves Coalesce and Pantera's influence is all over our records.

31:11 - That moment on the airplane with Dime is on the Pantera 3 DVD :) I still have it! He drew " Roach class " on his gut with a swirly circle, if I'm remembering correctly lol

I pissed my pants the first time I heard it. Didn't leave my car Alpine tape deck, (not CD yet) for one year! No joke! Perfect album to tune a car stereo to as well. Shit was just destroying.

Cool video. Perfect to watch during these stupid COVID times. I will never get tired of watching a Skype meeting with a few of my favorite band members lol. Pantera was my first metal show I've been to. I was 15 in the summer of 2001. I wished they would have played more songs from TGDTK but they only played war nerve. I agree a lot of great songs from Vulgar Display Of Power. That album or a song from Far Beyond Driven was the first time I heard of Pantera. It was 1995 when I first discovered Pantera. I found I listened to Vulgar Display Of Power and Far Beyond Driven the most. I was about 9 years old or something at the time lol. I listened to them so much I couldn't believe I caught them live!!! I will definitely remember that shit til the day I die! Fucking miss the Pantera days. Was really hoping for one more album after seeing them live on the extreme steel tour. I also remember watching The Exorcist and the devil answers father Karras and says "that's too much Vulgar Display Of Power Karras..."

Very nice interview, and in this day…holy fuck…how did you get them to do this? Amazing! I first heard VDOP when I was 16, in ‘93, and it totally changed my fucking life. It bridges the gap for me between glam “metal” to thrash/groove metal and allowing me to realize that there were heavy metal bands that sounded unbelievable as far as heaviness but could have decent, catchy hooks with insane guitar solos and kick you in the fucking face lyrics AND with a singer who did t just growl or make pig noises the whole album.

St Vincent covered a song...... "Really.... huh" lol $? That interviewer is a true fan and a class act. Excellent excellent interview. I would do just about anything to have a documentary detailing the making of that album. Like what they did with the Black album. I don't know if it's 100% true but I talked to the front of house sound man pantera's sound man at a show and one thing I wanted to know he told me Vinny used a 20-in kick on vulgar.
