So far from all the reaction videos of "What?" that I've seen, this is the best. I love that there's focus on the production, the melody, the wardrobe, choreography, individuality, the lyrics and the message it wants to convey to the audience. Each member has individual styles conveying different types of people in the society (just an opinion). The Government, The Working Class, The Rebels/Fighters, The Farmers and The Youth. The song actually speaks to us Filipino as this hits right in the gut on what's currently happening in our country. Thanks for this reaction video guys!

I think its not just a word play, it also has a connection to the song itself. For me its also like a challenging statement like when people say something bad about you, you face them squarely and tell them "What?". To all those who say bad things about them and bashes them, "What?!" To all those who doubted them and said that they won't get anywhere, "What?!" To those who are judging them,"What?" And now they're here they accomplish a lot, they have proven their worth, "What?"

There's a playful way Filipinos reply to a friend when asked "What?" They reply: "Watawat." (flag) Idk but it seems to me that Pablo (aka Sejun) drew the title of this song from that.

@JM B. Pablo likes playing with words to give titles to their songs . "Ikako" does not exist in the dictionary but Pablo used it to mean "Ikaw at Ako". "Tilaluha" is neither in the dictionary yet it is meant to say "Tila, luha" (Cease, tears!). So I guess the original title of their latest song could be "Watawat" but Pablo turned it to "What" and added a question mark to say "Which is your flag?"

Back story... This band took a lot of criticism since their launch. They have been called kpop wannabes, ugly and won't survive the industry. They have proven a lot of their haters wrong. This song is their statement song. If you notice the last part as they were walking against a crowd that is going opposite their direction. It shows how they struggled to go through all the hate and bias. Who they are which for some haters are trash, they said they will wear it proudly. They are not ashamed of who they are and won't pretend to be someone others want to see. "We don't need bullets to raise our flag. This bars (meaning their music) will reach hearts." Basically means that their music is their ammo. These boys have received numerous awards and is even the first southeast asian group who ranked some categories in Billboard. Thus their line, "with all the tragedies.. It didn't budge me.. I am here at last!" "Thank you Father (God), you are my amulet." It is a beautiful song.

The chamber where one of the members (josh) was dragged inside is an iron maiden, a kind of torture device that has spikes inside. The person inside it is supposed to slowly bleed to death. In the context of the song and the video, the trials that they went through served as their version of an iron maiden. Being a boygroup in the Philippines made them a target of indifference and hate from a lot of filipinos, however, it strengthened them and made them even more motivated to succeed. They were kept inside the iron maiden and now they're slowly breaking free from it, unscathed.

WHAT? is a word play, which Pablo, the composer and Leader of the group is fond of doing, as with their other songs, Tilaluha (Tila Luha- stop the tears {as in, stop crying} or like tears {literal teanslation}) , Ikako (Ikaw at Ako- you and me). "The whole video tells their story from scratch to what they are now and what they can still do in the future. In the first part, they told us their story when they were bashed, discriminated and put down. Saddest part was when even the Filipinos did step down on them. They were even judged that they sound Kpop and there will never be a Ppop. They were in the news but didnt stop. They used those negativities around to pull positivities and courage to go ahead! I think Justin is a dreamer. Looking at the Earth but blindfolded. Stell hold some seeds trying to tell us to dig and dig, plant something and in the future, there will be plenty of fruits. Ken is like a king in a throne made of junk. He said in the lyrics that he picked up and collected all the trash, and that lifted him up but he keeps telling us that even he has the power now, our feet should always be on the ground. Josh in real life didnt have an education degree. But on his part he said we are all different but sometimes, those so-called educated people are the worse. And he wont pretend. He started taking off those fancy clothes because that will never define him and what he can do. Then the dreamer Justin finally took out the blindfold. Now he is ready to turn those dreams to reality. Seeds from Stell's hand grew. From the scene when he was holding soil, raining and lightning like a storm, it changed into a clearer nature scene. Then there comes the part when they are in soldier costumes which has a resemblance of Generals during the old times in Philippines. An image of a general signifies courage, focus and determination. Those people they were trying to pass through are the bashers and those who didnt like them. But eventually, the same people became their fans and they celebrate together with SB19s music. Then it sounds like it became an anthem telling us that yes, Ppop is real. We have our own sound, our own music! Thats why Filipinos, let us all raise our flag! They represent our country but in a bigger picture, they used a flag with question mark which represents each of us to show us that everybody has his/her own flag to raise. This song is about raising your flag and be proud of yourself. It showcases how a person should be not ashamed where he/she came from and just raise their identity. Their concept also portrays how filipino fought for its independence and freedom from colonizers. Making us Filipinos remember our heroes such as Government soldiers, Guirillas, leaders and many others. But their soldier costume made me remember General Antonio Luna and General Gregorio del Pilar "Goyo" (Ang batang heneral) the most. 😁😁😁

The soldier attire is actually from Philippine-Spanish colonial uniform hehe you can have "Heneral Luna" as reference 😊 And yes, this is about SELF-EMPOWERMENT and raising YOUR OWN FLAG but there's also hint of PATRIOTISM. I was looking in the comments if someone explained this part to them, I knew there will be at least one. 🙂 My husband thought it was a North Korean uniform but I have to educate him about our history. Another part of history that they include is the Murillo Map at the end.
