I don’t think I’ve ever seen this battle covered before. For a matter of fact I don’t think I’ve seen Philip II covered much at all except for the battle of cheorenea.

IMO the notable book “By the spear. Philip II, Alexander the Great, and the rise and fall of the Macedonian empire”, (Oxford University Press) by prominent Scholar Ian Worthington, is the best study over the legacy of the Ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedonia.

Philip II is truly a great man, easily on the level of Alexander for what he had to compete with and what he achieved.

I would say Philip was just as capable if not more than his son. Alexander was at the head of an army that Phillip trained and built. Phillip made it possible for Alexander to be the Great.

@kaiza9184 Agreed, however I don't think if Philip invaded Persia instead of Alexander he would be as bold, he would have taken a peace to consolidate his holdings and definitely would have taken the marriage. Just my thoughts however, would have been a more stable empire

@@kaisertog7685 You’re right about that. Phillip was very patient and calculated. I don’t think he would have invaded Persia. If he did he I also believe it would have been very stable under his leadership. The world might have been a little different if Phillip was never assassinated. 😬

Excellent, commendable work. I do have one objection though: the repeated mention of "Macedonia" and "the Greeks", in a way that it might sound as if Macedonia and "Greece" where two different entities. The fact is, that there was no unified Greece at the time, the race of the Hellenes consisted of a plentitude of independent City States, sharing a common Ethnicity, language, worshiping the same Gods etc. The fact that they were fighting amongst them, creating alliances etc., was a historical truth, but that was how things were at the time. Philip's greatest achievement in my view was to unite all these City States one way or another and thus form the so called "Hellenic League", under the commandership of the City State of Macedonia (the militarily strongest Hellenic City State at the time), the main objective being, through the concept of synergy (1+1=3), to deal with the Persian threat once and for all. His son Alexander went on to achieve this goal and spread the Hellenic civilization to the then known World.

Thanks for your comment! I'm sorry if you got the impression that I was trying to unify the southern Greeks into a singular entity. My intention was to compare the different situations that each were faced with. As the southern Greek city states had many similarities to each other; Military Tactics, Religion, Geography. While the Macedonian Greeks had vastly different Geography and were surrounded on 3/4 of there sides by "Barbarians". The Macedonians also used vastly different military tactics not adopting the Phalanx until under the reign of Philip II. But you are right, after rereading my script I can see how someone could easily get the impression I was referring to them as a more unified entity, I will be sure to pay more attention to this in the future, thank you.

My main source for this comes from Diodorus Siculus' Library of History. When he recounts the events he states, "Philip his brother, who had escaped from his detention as a hostage, succeeded to the kingdom." this can be found at the end of 2.4.
