Alexander gets a lot of attention(for good reasons) but Phllip was a pretty skilled commander as well. His feigned retreat here was a brilliant move. Breaking up the enemy formation so that the more elite Thebans could be encircled while his veteran men tied down the Athenian troops. Easy to see where Alexander got his commanding skills from.

@@caseyh1934 true, we saw in alexander's life that he was great on the battlefield but was lacking a good deal in his political manuvers. He frequently failed in his attempts to appease the persian nobles and his own greeks, and nearly died multiple times due to that. Furthermore he failed to properly consolidate his gains and his empire, leading to it being broken immediately after he died. He should have been slower in expanding and should have tried for more heirs, so that they could have continued his work expanding. Its possible rome might have been conquered had it been a united macedon rather than just epirus fighting them.

This gives a lot of context for Alexander's later destruction of Thebes. His father treated them leniently because he needed allies against Persia. Alexander learned that they would never be an ally.

Phillip did all of the work, expanded the nation, made reforms, setting Macedonia up, deploying the sarissa pike -all tools building up Alexander - including choosing his tutor a man you may have heard of named Aristotle.

Germanium It was just mostly just big words from sparta with no action to back it up. Sparta had declined so badly that even the philosophy lovers of athens would have no problems wiping them out. In fact phillip chose not to invade sparta simply because it was just not worth his time. Even alexander just to snub the spartans gave luxuries and rewards to all greeks except sparta. It was pretty insulting to be honest. Sparta was already so miserable nobody even bothered with them.

Alexander the Great may well have been the greatest military commander in the history of the world but Philip II doesn't get nearly the credit he's due. He handed his son the keys to a formidable war machine, innovative and well trained. He also raised Alexander from birth to become what he later became (even securing Aristotle, one of the greatest philosophers and scientist the world had yet known, to be his teacher). Greatness only very rarely materializes out of thin air and Alexander was certainly no exception.

In the historical records, what is today commonly called "the league of Corinth" is mentioned as "Kinon Ellinikon" (ΚΟΙΝΟΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟΝ) which in fact translates as "Common Hellenic" (or Greek commonwealth). This is how you will find it written by the hands of the people who lived those days. The..."league of Corinth" term is simillar to that of "Byzantine Empire", confusion and slandering. The name "league of Corinth" only gives room for manipulating history.

Thanks for the information. I'm so fascinated by the Byzantine Empire and Hellenic civilization myself. While I agree that the term ''Byzantine'' is a purely historical construct, possibly designed by Western European historians to discredit the Eastern Roman Empire, it was also necessary to give a name to the unique civilization that emerged from 7th century onwards, and Byzantine Empire helps to make that distinction. It was still the Roman Empire, but it evolved into something very distinct. Roman in military and imperial tradition, Greek in thought and language, and Christian in faith.

The effort and amount of research you must do not only for the actual main content but a feature I've waxed lyrical about before on another video that I bet most people don't even notice or realize how much WORK that would be to put ALL those towns and settlements/trading posts on the map. No one else does that. Its unreal. But obviously you'd need to research maps from that time period to get them and to get them in the right place on the map. Sounds like SOOOOO much effort. Its worth it guys, it really is. Good documentary, but the title is misleading, it is a Thebean-Athenian coalition and not a greek of better said Panhellenic, the Aetolians, Epirotans and Spartans didn't take part in this war . Also Demosthenes didn't hate Philip for the reason of him being a Macedonian rather the real reason is that he took pretty much every city in the north that belonged in the second Delian league

Astute observations. Demosthenes characterized Philip to further his own end, which was to persuade the Athenians and ultimately all the Greeks of the danger Phillips autocracy posed to their autonomous way of life. After Philip came to power he subjugated city after city, and Demosthenes could tell that he posed a threat not just for the states in his vicinity but to the whole of Greece and to the civic way of life the Greeks valued so much. A life without liberty was a life not worth living in the view of citizens of the poleis. That was also Demosthenes' own very noble view. It's difficult not to sympathize with him. Alas the Greek cities thought it was going to be a nominal kind of hegemony and disregarded Demosthenes' sound advise. We can understand that as well. The Greek cities weren't about to be drawn into a costly war when Philip had not yet shown any clear sign that he intended to subjugate Greece. And so Chaeronea happened. The philippics don't represent Philip himself but rather the urgency felt by Demosthenes to defend against him and the perceived level of threat posed by indecisive foreign policy on the part of Athens.

Phillip was a danger sure, for the Delian League as they in turn build aggressive cities on the shores of Macedonia in order to claim the timber and gold that Macedonia had. Also ''Autonomus way of life'' or eleutheria was something that every citizen had even those who lived at kingdoms such as Epirus, Laconia (Sparta) Argos, Thessaly, Aetolia, Macedonia. The freedom always was a part that everyone is equal in the eyes of law. The Athenians just took that a step further and when they held the hegemony at the end of the Persian wars they turned the Delian League into Athenian Hegemony thus sparking the Peloponisian war. Also, when they liberated themselves, with the help of Thebes, they, once again, tried to create the second Delian League, which tried to become again an Athenian Hegemony thus sparking again the Social war!!!! I am a Greek and I too believe that Eleftheria (freedom) and autonomy a is sacred, but the Athenians didn't hold their end of the bargain in that regard, Sparta is guilty too for that matter. Also ''Greek cities'' isn't really the term that I will use. We are in the era of coalition or leagues. Arcadian league (Argos Messene and the rest of central Peloponnese) Boeotian League (Thebes and Aeolians), Delian League (Athens and the Ionian city-states), Chalcidian League etc. Also, you regard Demosthenes as pure idealist, and to be fair it's true BUT, again, he was an Athenian patriot. He could care less about the freedom of Aetolia (Naphpactos=Athenian aggressive settlement in Aetolia) or Macedonia (Neapolis, Pydna, Methone=Athenian aggressive settlements in Macedonia) or even of Chalcidian League's (Potidea=Athenian aggressive settlement in Chalcis). see that's the reason that only the Boeotian and Delian League fought in this battle as the rest just accept Macedonia Hegemony during the end of the third sacred war and after the punishment that Phocian League received.

I am curious about where you would draw the line between authenticity and understandability though. For example, if you used the native names for countries in the World Wars you would be talking about Deutschland, Nippon, Belgique and Österreichisch-Ungarische. While many English speakers could probably follow what you are saying, I think the majority would struggle to understand every name.

I've seen arguments with some good links and points in other videos covering this part of Greek history that the sacred band may have been less lovers and more like shield brothers. Something about how someone got the various words for the different types of love that the Greeks used confused. Pretty common still even in this day. Thanks for the vid.

Yep, the "definition" of the Sacred Band is up for debate. In a nutshell, it's either A) an actual small elite unit made up for male lovers (not impossible at all), or B) a unit with mature soldiers training their "favorites" who are young boys. The problem is mostly in translation of certain words from Greek that creates confusion. In all, my personal opinion is that we can't know for sure which of the two Sacred Band was, perhaps even a mix of A and B.

Thebans were sworn enemies of Athenians for centuries. All the sources we have about the sacred band come from athenian sources. It is like germans won the WWII and 2k years after we have only german descriptions of the allies. Athenians called Boiotia the land of the Thebans , " Land of the cows. This is not a definition just for the cows but for the people themselves" .Meaning all thebans were cows. This is how much the "liked" Thebans..

It still sounds "Makedonia" for Greeks, except for people who fall for slavic propaganda, cause Slavs call it Macedonia, allthought Slavs wouldn´t exist yet back then, and for another 1300 years... My mother (greek) was stunned in 1967, during a trip in Germany, where she found out, that Slavic propaganda has worked that good, that US-Americans didn´t know that Makedonia was founded by Greeks, but supposedly by Slavs instead, althought the name is more than 1000 years older than the first existing Slavs in human history (those Slavs far-far away in Russia, and not before much later, also arriving near Greece)...

If you visit the battlefield of Chaeronea, you’ll see that the Sacred Band was positioned on the far left flank, next to the Athenians and not the far right next to the main Theban army. They were buried where they fell - 254 bodies buried in pairs - in a mass grave marked by the Lion of Chaeronea and their bodies would not have been carried a kilometer from the position of the right flank to where the grave site is. There is precedent for this as well - Theban commanders Pelopidas and Epaminondas positioned the Sacred Band on the left wing in order to oppose their opponents’ best troops, most notably at Leuktra in 371. This detail doesn’t change the overall understanding of the Battle of Chaeronea but it’s an important note nonetheless.

An interesting thing you didnt mention is how Philip conquered Tesaly without ever invading it. Whenever Mekedonian troops would enter the region they would always do so by the request of atleast one city or faction in the region itself, he did this for decades also giving lavish gifts and inviting to feasts the weaker factions in the region which started seeing him as their friend and protector. Eventually he destroyed the most powerful ruling faction and was by his friends and allies elected the new king of Tesaly, and married in to the former ones bloodline to give the defeated factions hope that they may yet find their place in his new order if they cooperate. It was becomming ruler of Thesaly which gave him a seat on the helenic counsil. And oh how Thebes would regret teaching Philip everything they knew from politics to military maters when he was a worg there. For it was Philips son, Alexander the Great, which would level the city.

Phillip learned military structure , strategy, delivery in Thebes. He grew up there. And he was tutored by the 2 greats of Thebes -- Pelopidas and Epaminondas. In a way Phillip was semi-Theban.

Fan fact: After the battle the Thebans burried the fallen soldiers of the Sacred Band in a massive Memorial monument in the site of the battle. This tomb monument exists still today, search for the Lion of Chaeronia. I think something like 276 dead bodies were found burried there but I couldnt find more information about them. I would be interested to learn about the anthropological data of the fallen

While occupying the Ionian Greeks at the same time They also sent gold to the Spartans to battle the Macedonians won by Antipater on behalf of Alexander the Great. The Persians also invaded Greece and burned Athens before being driven out. Alexander the Great ended their empire.

@@HistoryMarche guys relax! Makedonia and Macedonia are both right. Makedonia is the greek word and Macedonia is the english word. All the english terms sounds a little bit deferent than the greek words. Thousands of greek words sounds deferent than the english words. For example, the greek king "Selefkos". The english people say, the Greek king "Seleucus" . That doesnt mean that Seleucus is wrong. It is just deferent languge!
