My husband told me about this poem today. He said that every time he read it, he had a slightly different interpretation of it, though the years. I was grateful he told me about, "What Work Is", because I'd never heard about it and enjoyed it as well. I can imagine how, from childhood to adulthood, my husband may have reacted to this poem, and we enjoyed talking about it and hearing it read, with feeling, by Kristen Dupard.

I've been reading this poem for thirty years. I remember reading it in The New Yorker in my department chair's office and carried it straight into my classroom and read it to my students. I own almost every book Levine has published and was lucky enough to meet him and see him read a few times. We lost a giant when he died.

A good poem doesn't need performing, only reciting.

I am speaking to you from across the chasm of 5 years to tell you that I think this is categorically untrue.
