I saw the movie first. If you do see the movie, go into it with the understanding that the main characters were played by actors who tried their best to match the original vocalists' performances, not professional singers who got into a Hollywood film. Many bash their inability to measure up but I praise their ability to get as close as they did, I loved it.
@Fedorchik15363 жыл бұрын
It wasn't actors's fault, the filming process itself was incredibly flawed and simply set to get bad performances. They did the same thing with "Cats" and made it even worse.

Far as I'm concerned, the 10th anniversary concert is the best iterations of this musical (the 25th anniversary concert is a close second - it has a better Javert, imo, but not as good a Valjean, and I prefer some of the side characters in the 10th anniversary edition). Both concerts have basically every song in order, with a few bits of text to provide any missing context for the following song. The overwhelming majority of the story is told through the songs though, so you're really not missing anything by watching the anniversary editions. I would recommend either of those over the movie. Javert (the character singing this song) is the bad guy; a cop chasing down an ex-con named Jean Valjean, who broke parole in order to avoid the stigma of having been in prison. His crime? Stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving nephew. He got 5 years hard labour for the theft, and another 14 for multiple escape attempts.
@masteryoda4583 Жыл бұрын
Alfie boe in the 25th anniversary is too belty and has too powerful of a voice for valjean. This is why colm wilkinson is the definitive valjean. Valjean's voice is supposed to bring out the raw emotions of the character as much as possible and not just belt everything out. This is especially true in "bring him home". The whole point of the song is valjean is praying for a SLEEPING Marius. He practically should be whispering. The song should be gentle and soothing, and a booming voice like alfie boe's isn't gonna do it justice. Besides, the song was literally created for colm wilkinson. The creators of the show stumbled upon him practicing his falsetto and decided to write the song as his voice was perfect for it. Noone has even come close to colm's delivery of it. So although alfie boe is an excellent singer and a very good valjean in his own rights, he just doesn't portray valjean as well as the original valjean, colm wilkinson.

This is the 10th Anniversary of the Musical. I read the book in high school, it was required reading, but had never paid much attention to the musical, but was flipping through the channels in October 1995 and came across the 10th Anniversary broadcast on PBS at the point where they sew singing “One Day More”. I was mesmerized, and had no clue what the heck I was watching, but wanted more. I saw it was going to replay in 2 hours so I recorded the rebroadcast of it and rewatched it. I bought the CD. And then went to NYC and saw it on Dec. 31, 1995 and walked to Time Square for the ball dropping. I’ve also seen this when they came to Dallas 5 years ago. As awesome as it is to see this live, this 10th Anniversary with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the choir, and the All-Star cast is enchanting. After seeing this and the second encore sang in 17 languages, I was disappointed on Broadway when they sang Auld Lang Syne but that’s the price you pay for going New Years Eve. It’s been a few months since you have done this but it is an excellent show. You can see the whole thing on line. Or you can just review “One Day More”. It sums up the entire first act in 2 minutes. You will be totally confused without knowing the story, but it will whet your appetite and be awesome so see your reaction.

Philip Quast is awesome as Javert. just watch 10th anniversary concert. i think it's on KZbin. Even if you watch it without context it has some text narration to fill the gaps and the songs are structured in a way that most of the story conveyed through singing. Movie is good for context (even if it loses some from the story itself), but it's filming process was, at best, unfortunate. The singing is just bad, even good singers sound bad.

Without giving too much away, this is Javert, who is chasing the main character for breaking parole. He is the antagonist but not a "bad guy". He believes in the rule of law and that justice is black and white. He believes that you should pay for your crimes, even if it is stealing a loaf of bread to feed your sister's starving children. To me, he is just as sympathetic of a character as the lead, Jean Valjean, and the play portrays him in a good light - especially with this song - even though he is hunting the protagonist.

The story of "Les Miserables" from the book by Victor Hugo , of the same title, is set in Paris in the latter part of the 1800's, a time of great political unrest. As an aside, when I lived in London, my sister dragged me off to see the musical at least three times, I remained unimpressed by it at the time. This was the case for several years until I too became a "victim" of the "Susan Boyle" phenomenon, when she gave an incredible performance of "I Dreamed a Dream", from the show, in Britains Got Talent. The Video clip which went viral across the globe, enraptured me too and I began to research and evermore appreciate the show and the amazing music..!! Now it is a firm fravourite of mine...!
