I was in Dido in the early 1950s as a lad in the RNR for my month’s training, I was a deck boy in the MN and joined the RNR at that time ..She was in the middle of Portsmouth harbour made fast to a bouy alongside HMS Jamaica and for a short time HMS Trafalgar , several of us occupied the stokers mess on the port side ..Your beautiful model bought back memories, thank you Philip...Sadly I think she was scrapped in 1957...Happy days lol .

These are indeed beautiful ships and a lovely model. I hope one day to have the opportunity to build a smaller one for myself.

A wonderfully atmospheric work of art, brilliantly made. My uncle Lt Kenneth Todd served in Dido and Resolution during the war ( off West Africa round to Mombasa Trincomalee and back and thought Dido was the happier and better ship by far, saying correctly handled, the 5.25 guns were extremely handy especially against U Boats E Boats and aircraft He would have loved this model.

it would be so wonderful to see these master model makers at work showing how to do some of the small detail items lite bollards, or life rafts.

It took dozens to build the original, but one amazing talent makes the model.

Amazing! ...Since the beginning of the pandemic I have been building the ships "The Black Pearl" and "Queen Anne's Revenge" based on plans, scenes and images, although it has been difficult because I cannot dedicate myself full time due to economic circumstances. This art is majestic and I would like to be able to dedicate my full time to it.

Yes I agree with your summation of the Dido class. Rather surprisingly the RNZN ended up with the ultimate Dido, HMS Royalist, as the result of RN budget cuts that ended the modification program and resulted in her being a modern orphan. She was a lovely looking ship and I'd love to model her as she was after her reconstruction. Perhaps a better value AA cruiser than the Tiger class? The Flyplane 5 system was installed with two Mark 6 Directors, supposedly capable of dealing with 700 mph targets, and 3 STAAG self directed Bofors mounts that were apparently quite impressive when they worked. Just a shame the rest of the ship wasn't up to it by then, in terms of hull, accommodation, and machinery.

If only I had the resources to commission a model. Had you ever thought of including forward hull warping common on light combatants due to their high speed and wave action ? Great work sir thx for Sharing

No third forward turret? 🤔👍

Dido was completed with only four turrets. The fifth was added in late 1941.

I worked alongside two men who served on Dido. Les Read and Dusty Miller. Les can be seen Atop one of her fore turrets in Pompey harbour photo. I did a painting of her for Dusty and Fully agree with Philip that they were handsome vessels. But, surely, Philip, she had all tnree Foreward turrets in 1940?
