More like unintentionally/accidentally. The mermaids was there to eat them, so obviously she was too. It doesn't make any sense why she wanted to save him? She just saw one guy an intend to drag him into the water to eat him, but when she caught him the boulders fall onto them at the same time. So, yeah, it was all acidental.

@@norakirayumi it wasn’t. She rushed out of the water to pull him out of the water, then left. If she was trying to eat him, she would’ve kept her grip on him and broken his neck or something. The moment he’s dragged out of the way, she lets go and goes to leave, only to get stuck. Anybody could see that she was caught by the debris facing the other direction, as if she were leaving, not facing him, as if she were going to kill him.

For the people that don't know what happened to the sailor at the end, the mermaid saved him. In the movie one sailor says that a kiss from a mermaid saves a person of drowning, so she kissed him and now the both can breathe underwater. Philip era alguien noble que tenia compasion por los demas, y eso provoca que sin buscarlo logra que la sirena le otorge la eternidad. 2. La hija del capitan, realmente queria ayudar a su papá a salvarse, logra tambien obtener mas años de vida. 3. Al final el pirata Jack, indica que la fuente es caprichosa y prueba el merecimiento de esa vida eterna. 4. Los españoles al ser tan dogmaticos, destruyen la fuente por la consideran que profana los lineamientos de la divinidad. Jajaja.

At the end of the movie she kisses him so he can breath underwater and is now capable of living in the sea with her...
