He was not an American song writer. He was a Canadian citizen and remained one his whole life, lived and loved in Montreal and continued residing there. His literature and most of his music was written there . Thanks

I saw Cohen twice in Adelaide when I worked as local crew at the Entertainment Centre there. It was an amazing experience to see him up close - he was this frail old man who pulled himself up on stage clutching the rail of the stairs and looked like he could be blown over by a slight breeze but as soon as he started to speak and sing he seemed 10 feet tall and like an eternal, elemental being - it was the most uncanny thing I've ever seen - like his being was not contained in his physical frame.

To everyone who’s losing their shit because the narrator mentions the Great American Songbook, be aware that there is no Great British Songbook, no Great Canadian Songbook etc. It’s just a useful way to validate how good the songs are.

The western world is referred to as US, Canada , Australia , New Zealand and most of Europe .their political system operates pretty much as an oligopoly and democracy is window dressing , Due to donations the constitution allows Big business .police services and many government Ministries to make decisions that erode our democracy . Like it or not, North Americans and South Americans are Americans. Must we quibble over the semantics? Yes? Ok then , let’s start with the misappropriation of “America” as synonymous with the USA. It is a malapropism.

Knows zero about what he means to US.. he means everything to me. He will always be within me.. all apologies if I sound unkind. Not intended as such. I'm a Texan and he was a Canadian..it was obvious in his lyrics. He died the day trump won in 2016... I felt that was so Him..
