It always makes me cringe a little when I hear somebody with depression issues cornered into explaining it like it's some kind of mental malfunction, as if a person could chalk up their reaction to this existence and therefore their life as a malady based on some comparison to "normal" peoples behavior. Some might argue that the people who carry the banners for the status quo in such a twisted and vicious society are the mentally deranged ones. I guess he said that though, everybody has their thing. I just find it a little smug when people act as if there is some prototypical way of being and everyone who can't or won't accept or aspire to it are broken.

I've dealt with depression for most of my life, on and off (I'm in my mid 50s now) and, while nothing he said surprised me, he has such a gift with words that his description of the difficulty at the worst of it in even moving from one moment to the next provides me some comfort. Perhaps it's partly knowing the company I keep isn't bad at all. What I really think is that his willingness to be so naked about it felt freeing for me &, I'm willing to bet, for others who struggle with it.

I met Leonard Cohen in Phoenix, Arizona after a concert just before he was leaving the Celebrity Theater in his limousine in 1976. He actually made the time for me to pose a question regarding his yet unrecorded song, “The Swan”, which appeared in 1979 on his album ‘Recent Songs’. (‘The Swan’ it floated on the English river…’). He actually took the time to have me express my reaction to this recently composed chanson and gracefully put up with my having interrupted his attempt to exit the area to thank me for expressing my favorable reaction and shook my hand before stepping into the waiting limo. He was living in Los Angeles at the time and chose to perform at this theater two or three times in 1976 as it was the perfect venue to sort out new material for his upcoming recording sessions given the intrinsic intimacy of this theater in the round. For me, his patience in allowing me this generous opportunity was typical of the attitude in never allowing himself to feel above any attendee but rather had the innate capacity to relate on an individual level with any admirer of his work.

Interesting to see the reaction here to the attitude of the interviewer, and their perception of how obnoxious and insulting she is when, in fact, her questions are insightful and right on the mark. It's a challenge to interview anyone who is famous, it takes skill, and this lady came prepared, didn't stumble her way through it, but knew about him, and asked intelligent questions. It seemed to me that both of them enjoyed the conversation, and neither one found it insulting. Cohen seemed perfectly at ease. And he is, by the way, a favorite of mine, a poet and something of a genius. I love his music, and above all his brilliant lyrics.

self inquiry does not = depression or mental illness. Leonard is authentic. The interviewer is on a different wavelength. She is clueless.

I agree Janet. The interviewer lack depth and empathy , it sounds more like an interrogation

he is awesome ... he keeps coming back to the center of honesty and humility ... she kind of like a placeholder to practice non judgement ... her candle isnt burning to brightly ... just notice the the fine tuning of focusing on the truth. i like every ones comments. it is so nice to see / hear other like minded people ... sustains me when i get out of balance ... non-denominational blessings ... thanks for your thoughts ... ccc

The interwiever is awful ! What an unsensivity also in her voice! A too stupid woman for Leonard Cohen, however, he is an absolute Gentleman

It's amazing how the times have changed in talking about depression. When you grow up in an age where it is looked upon as a failing or stigmatized even in the sixties To it was something you hid. There are times I still cannot believe I made it this far. The main thing that I finally learned was that feeling of inertia and fear of making the wrong move, passes it's not forever. It is still very difficult but I know it's not the end. I am glad that is easier to talk about for the ones who suffer from this demon.

Interviewer for sure missed a great opportunity to have had one of the best and most open interviews about Depression.

I love Leonard Cohen. He is such a gentle, modest and humble man, God bless him, yet his songs are superb. I adore him.❤

Wow! That is a brutal interviewer. I would have a difficult time sharing anything with her.

Leonard was a true poet , he worked on his darkness and revealed himself in so many masterpieces. He was truly an amazing artist , you either appreciated his intellectual deliverance or you missed out on such an amazing profound experience of his songs enriched by his poetic lyrics.

Yes, I thought the interviewer was a little disrespectful and a little aggressive. Cohen dealt with her superbly though

What endurance! What an intelligence! The very good lesson for all of us how to behave in public with people like this "journalist".

Oh my, she's horrid. Mr. Cohen did a very professional job of handling her.

I can't even write songs when I'm happy. When I'm happy i don't really have a reason to write songs.

Love Mr. Cohen's ability to be even-handed and laugh at himself... a bit of his personality shines through, despite the clunky mechanical style of the interview. Picturing the maestro Leonard Cohen being pelted by an automatic tennis server is classic.

How shallow and inept an interviewer. Good on Leonard for proceeding with this interview. He is the consummate professional. And a brilliant wordsmith 🎶

Finally! A person on this page who makes sense. I totally agree with you on all counts. I wonder if the other "contributors" even listened to the revelations Mr. Cohen gave in this interview. It is profound and I don't think he would open up to just anyone about these subjects. Great observations! Thank you!

Go to a video about the greatest lyricist of our times discussing severe issues like depression... scroll to the comments... everybody complains about the interviewer... serves me right for wishing to see others' thoughts on his unique perspective on the topic :_0

I dont' know if it serves you right, or if I even understand, but posing a question, I think, is normal. Seems some who are fantastical about any artist of any type, when watching an interview with them, people are always at least a bit critical, of the interviewer, and I get it - they're highly sensitive. Before I read the comments here i did think the woman was crossing lines but he was cool about it. It's aher touchy, personal subject, and he's opening up, and she's a little reckless with her line of questioning, i think, as much as i don't think she was against him or trying to be mean spirited.

Clearly not; she saw that he was perfectly willing to address these issues, so she pursued them; any interviewer worth their salt would do the same. She's a bit hard edged and clumsy about it, but he gave her good, interesting answers that are worth thinking about, so I'd say the interview is successful.

I sincerely came to hear LC voice which i find soothing to my anxious addicted mind and found very unsettling remarks about the reporter...LC was a practicing Buddhist...acceptance and suffering was his path perhaps I need to learn more from him when I see such negative remarks in the comment section. Namaste 🙏
