It seems symbolic that they're prioritising punishment and control over self guided study in schools. I went to a pretty rough school, and the exclusion room was tiny. Much smaller than a classroom. Much smaller than the library. It wasn't supposed to have a classrooms worth of kids in it at any one time. You could maybe fit 5% of the students in it. Because there aren't many kids that are so much of a problem that they have to be physically separated from the other students.

Hey Phil, Arkansan here living in a county one of the book bans happened in (mentioned in the article). My roommates mom was the head librian at the public libary. An employee set up a feature near the front containing books that were LGBTQ+ positive and didn't contain any graphic material. But that made some doctors in the city over upset and they petitioned the county to remove it. Many people I know went to fight it and even had some viral tiktoks about it but nothing could be done to convince the conservatives in power. My roommates mom ended up resigning by "suggestion" and was even social ostracized from her church. Books kept me out of trouble as a teenager when everyone around me was joining gangs, dropping out of school, and ending up in juvi and later jail/prison. I would hope that's not how they handle situations like that. At the very least they should be paying for therapy because that would 100% be traumatic especially for a child. Also even if it was the right car, was it really necessary to point a gun at a child? I doubt a 6th grader would be considered an accomplice in a car theft and would need a gun pointed at them.

This Houston district thing, removing books really gets me. I came from a really religious but poor family. The only way I got to escape and also get information that I otherwise would have been ignorant to, was through books. I didn’t have the money to buy books, and you usually won’t have the gas to go to the public library all the time. “Oh, you have the internet” How do you afford a phone when you can’t even put food on a table? How do you afford PCs in your house when you struggle to pay a light bill? Without books, a lot of people in poverty have no other way to educate themselves, especially the kiddos. They’re hitting a lot of poverty stricken schools with this new change, and I know it’s way more about keeping those kiddos uneducated than it is about discipline. I live in Houston btw.

For bail, easy solution that'd stop many states from unreasonably holding people pre-trial is demand that the state owes the citizen for 16 hours pay per day at the federal minimum wage and that must be paid each week (use the 13th amendment to back this law). That's on top of all other services to support the person that must be provide free of charge to the detainee. Texas also passed a law allowing the state government to rule elections null and void in Houston's county if there were any issues or suspected issues. Could be. Though there are a lot of reasons libraries get rid of books, whether it be something like excess supply, too much wear, replacements, updated volumes, lack of self space, donation books they don't have room for, etc. There are also used library books floating around that people basically never returned to the library and ended up selling or donating later down the line. I don't understand how removing libraries from schools and replacing them with "disciplinary centers" benefits children? It makes zero sense. There should already be spaces for lunch detention and detention. I was on lunch detention for so many weeks just because of tardiness. There are kid juries for other kids as a punishment. If I didn't have books for detention, I don't know what I would've done when I finished my homework. Books were my life for a large part of my childhood. We all know what this sounds like.

The thought of schools shutting down their school libraries is so sad. The school library was my safe space during lunch and recess when i was bullied :((

I hope that family gets some sort of compensation. They could be traumatized for life.

They were certain there was a weapon in the car.... in other words, we are getting our excuse for taking your lives ready now, and we will make sure to "find" it later. Luckily, we brought an extra one with us just in case. Those people will sue and they will hopefully and rightfully win. Unfortunately, it will be tax payers that will pay for that mistake.

sounds like a nice lawsuit for that family

She slso shouldn't show up 2 hours late to a show in the heat and ask ppl to pour water on her cuz its so hot. I hate how rappers always do that too show up 2-3 hours late and act like its ok. Its not. Everyone should get a refund.

Phil used to report the news, now he's just propaganda. The Russia story is a prime example of this a decade ago he would have condemned Ukraine for targeting civilians. He used to report middle of the road, now he just regurgitates left wing propaganda.

Removing libraries to turn them into discipline rooms is just wild to me. Like whoever actually thought that was a good idea needs to be fired. Like right the fuck now.

If I was that family, I'd be calling lawyers to get a lawsuit filed IMMEDIATELY.

I hate that the story of the family being traumatized by overzealous law enforcement is just quickly skipped over. What was the reason for running their plates in the first place? I'll wait...and miss me with that they do it randomly BS.

@@wajmgirl "Automated/automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) capture computer-readable images that allow law enforcement to compare plate numbers against plates of stolen cars or cars driven by individuals wanted on criminal charges. The devices are mounted on police cars, road signs or traffic lights and capture thousands of images of plates." (It was probably done automatically, and a computer or coding error caused the mishap, things like debris or camera blur can cause the licence plate to be read as the plates of a different vehicle, other things like a typo in police reports on the actual stolen vehicle can also have caused the mishap too.

Sue her. One is water that she asked for that wont cause any damage the other can be seen as a weapon in court.

i saw a video over the weekend of Chad Grey from Mudvayne being splashed with beer in and he tries to punch the guy back. which many people will say this guy is the nicest and has been pushed to the edge, he took it in stride enough, but it's just so frequent.

What do you expect is going to happen when you throw something at someone? Everyone has lost their goddamn minds. Why are they throwing shit at people in the first place?

This one was the exact same make, model, color and license plate. Just AR vs AZ.
