Find local cooperative organizations, get in contact with people giving out food, find ways to create or participate in non-corporate community spaces. The stronger our local communities are, the harder it is for authoritarianism to take hold. So get involved, even if it just means getting your produce from farmer's markets and community gardens more than the grocery store. It all helps!
@Turkeysocks3 ай бұрын
@@willbortin3595 This is not exactly true. It can actually be easier for authoritarianism to take hold with a strong knit local community. Just look at 1930's Europe. Most small communities only had a few people who were pro-fascists views among them. It only took those few people to sway entire communities to go along with the fascists at the very least, and in some cases turned the entire community into a fascist stronghold. It's one of the many reasons why Germany was so successful in rounding up the "undesirables" during WWII for their labor/death camps. I'm not saying don't try to forge a strong bonds with your neighbors and community. Just be mindful that it only takes one person to poison an entire community.

And now, with Chevron gone, they're front and center to implement the corporate chapter of Project 2025. A year or two before the Dodd ruling, Leonard Leo took control of a +$1 billion donation from some electronics billionaire and made it the war chest of every right-wing initiative going forward. The right talks about about this cabal of leftists and their nefarious plan to indoctrinate their Marxist gay agenda. I would love to see this plan. The Karen Read trial was WILD to say the least, and it was almost slapstick to watch how badly the investigators fumbled the ball on this, intentionally or not. Even if she really killed her boyfriend (which I don't believe), the way this case was investigated should've gotten this case thrown out. Highlights include: - DNA evidence gathering in Red Solo Cups, being transported in a Stop&Shop bag. - the people inside the house where the victim was found were not interviewed at first, and when they were, they were interviewed all together. Which you'd usually prevent, you know, so they don't line up their testimonies with each other. Not here. - the crown witness for the prosecution changed her testimony, to now claiming Karen Read said "I hit him" _only after_ conspiracy theories popped up blaming the crown witness and her family for the death. - the lead investigator knew that a snowplow driver plowed the road of the crime scene multiple times the night of the murder, but withheld information that he knew that, let alone interview the guy. Plot twist, the defense found him, got him on the stand; his testimony: The body wasn't yet on the lawn by 2 AM in the morning. - the Medical Examiner couldn't conclusive determine John O'Keefe's death as a homicide, and admitted that she couldn't confirm that the wounds he received were from being hit with a car. Paraphrasing, "One theory as to what happened is as likely as any other," in her professional opinion. - independent forensic experts in accident reconstruction (paid for by the FBI who, surprise, are apparently investigating the actual investigation for misconduct) determined that it is physically impossible to have happened the way the prosecution laid it out. - the forensic "expert" of the prosecution holds the academical degree of "Trooper" (meaning, none), and as basis for his accident reconstruction told the jury under oath, "The crime scene talked to me." The list goes on. It was a mess.

3 things that stood out to me: -There was never a search of the inside of the home. The home owners then got rid of their family dog, completely renovated their basement and sold their home shortly after the incident. -Brian Higgins (key witness and police officer) removed the SIM card from his cellphone, drove to a military base, and trashed the device and SIM card in separate dumpsters amid the investigation. He also got a new phone number the day before he was going to be subpoenaed. -Jen McCabe googled “how long to die in the cold” (spelled wrong) at 2:27am the night of the death and deleted the search. The body was found around 5-6am.

@@k8dom Agreed! The "Highlights" (or rather lowlights I guess) were specifically regarding the way the investigation / prosecution was handled. As someone who used to work in the corporate call center for Red Roof Inn, this is unsurprising. The problem is that nearly every RRI is franchised, and there is quite literally no quality control (at least when I used to work for them years ago) on the franchised locations. Whenever corporate shut one down, office staff would even joke, "imagine being so bad you get dropped by Red Roof". They are clearly aware of the problem, as I had numerous calls from front desk staff asking me how to bill for a "3 hour stay" and multiple mentioning having rooms dedicated for short term stays like that. This isn't including the locations that outright fraudulently charge customers cards for false charges. Red Roof Inn made me hyper vigilant in any motel now, including obsessing over the door being properly locked and checking my card for any fraudulent charges. Corporate knows what's happening, and to say otherwise is an outright lie on their part.

Hearing about Project 2025 horrifies me! I already had an argument with my mom about how I feel it’s wrong about Oklahoma’s idea of mandatory bible stories. I tried to explain how the use of religion in politics has a big effect on fear and dictating minorities, especially as someone who is LGBTQ and Asian. I find religion is only going to cloud judgement and be used for personal advantage, and not everyone is a Christian. Unfortunately her response to that was “we’re Catholics, we have different standards and are more open.” But how can you when you are oppressive about women reproductive rights, autonomy and freedom, especially as their own daughter (by birth anyway). So it scares me how US politics will influence the way I can live comfortably and feel safe.

I worked at a red roof for several months and I witnessed so much shady stuff going on there. I was never totally positive about anything like sex trafficking but we were never given any instructions on signs to look for. In fact most of my training just involved making sure all the rooms got sold every night. All we needed was someone with an ID, didn’t matter if that was the person actually staying in the room or not and a $100 to $200 deposit depending on the night and whether or not we thought the person seemed extra rough. I did hear fights, shouting, and physical abuse but it was the owners who were engaging in it. I had no idea what to do other than to turn up the volume on the tv in the lobby. I was forced to sell rooms that I knew probably had mold in them. Eventually the hotel got shut down for a while because of the rampant mold, exposed wires that were a major fire hazard, and other various safety violations. I had already left at that point because the mold in the office had causing my autoimmune disease to flare up really bad plus I just couldn’t handle the owners anymore. All the shady stuff, terrible pay, and horrible environment just became too much. They have reopened under a different name now but it’s still the same owners and I don’t have much faith in them changing.

@@weinteruptth.1479I appreciate the positive intent behind this comment but but it misses a bit of the point. Not to mention that trying to be active in any form of politics as an openly (or closered) queer person can be very difficult. Community outreach and charity work sure but anything really political in nature and people get upset when LGBT+ get involved or is the subject (at least where I live) Not to mention, if the above changes go into effect there will be far less workers rights protection in jobs for people of diffrent sexuality or trans gender identity. Which is very concerning as those protections have been in place for a very long time. But even outside of that there is likely to be a rise in Queer Hate if P25 goes into effect in any large way. I get you were trying to encourage OP to tune out and focus on what they CAN change around them but unfortunately with elections on the way it's good to stay at least some what tuned in so that you can react and spread the word about policies that you support or oppose. For example they wouldn't know about the threat of P25 to their own rights if they never watched this video. So while local committees are very important and doing Community work is always admirable it's a bit tone deaf to suggest that this isn't something to feel a bit bummed about. At least on the initial watch of the video. I mean no offense to you but I do hope you understand some of what I mean and why I disagree with that stance. And if OP reads this, I'm so sorry hun, about everything going on. It's scary out here and there doesn't feel like we can do much, and life is already really busy and difficultas is. But if anyone was on the fence about where to vote and cares about the balance of power, personal rights and freedoms, LGBT rights, or reproductive rights we need to use this as a talking point. Share this with people who might be on the fence. Even if it might cause some tensions. If this is something worth fighting for then now is the time to try and win the battles of people's hearts and minds. Let it be the line in the sand that makes you stand your ground. Because I honestly wasn't sure where my vote was going until today. So clearly this information can persuade a great deal of people to change their minds.

The text on the cars and the clock was backwards, so they were caught by the defence in court. They all claimed that that was how they recieved/found the video. In the last several weeks, like an intrusive thought, I keep seeing, in my mind's eye, a sepia picture of an Iranian woman, in fashionable mini dress with her hair uncovered, cutting into birthday cake. It was taken only a few years before the Iranian Revolution. I am haunted by it, and the thoughts of future historians looking at photos of us, and wondering what we were thinking.

well it was the US that backed the Iranian revolution. all empires fail and failing empires start to use on their own citizens what they do to the rest of the world. trump or biden doesn't really matter the US is already on our steady decline into a fascist dictatorship sooner or later

What a perfect encapsulation of the danger we face. What's really scary is that there are so many different pictures that could represent what we stand to lose, and that very picture is still one of them. (or at least a modern recreation with an American woman)

I hadn't thought about Iran. I'm getting Germany 1934, just before the Nuremburg laws went into effect, we all know what happened from there..or we should.

As a french person who didn't want the olympics to come to my country (that thing is super expensive for the country and we are the one who are going to pay for it), being told that the only good thing that supposed to come out of it , tourism, will be in decline because of the game is so stupid and terrifying.

No offense to you personally, of course, but I'm honestly not surprised. I feel like Paris is fairly well known for being full of people who are notoriously rude and hate tourists.

It’s expensive for every country. We lost money on the Olympics in Montreal , maybe broken even with the Vancouver, and Toronto lost money for the Pan Am games. We are talking loss of multi millions of dollars.

@@makennarudolph It's not just Paris, every single city\country that has taken the Olympics "burden" have ended up with massive losses, worthless expensive structures that lay abandoned for decades, or juuust slightly break even with the costs. It's a very expensive event, which also brings tons of problems with it (the mass killing of stray animals and the abuse towards poor and\or homeless people for example) and is a massive pain in the ass for the locals, who now have to share the same public transportation with 10x the amount of unwashed tourists they do normally, which is already too much. Europeans would vote for politicians that explicitly say they don't want the Olympics in their country\city, that's how much we hate them lol

Right, because turning the government into an ideological echo chamber can't possibly go wrong. That Seal Team 6 thing is starting to sound better and better....... Edit: Holy sh!t. This is basically one step removed from a freaking dictatorship.

Thank you for covering 2025. When the Republicans haven't put forward a true platform we have to take Project 2025 as their true platform and guide. I am horrified now more than ever, as a lesbian who has been with her wife for 23 years, I am horrified because I don't know if I have the fight in me anymore; not after settling for the bare minimum of recognition and respect only to have it taken away again.

NPR just talked about how republicans are making their platform behind closed doors in a few weeks which they said was odd because normally it’s done w tons of cameras in the room

@rhyael39333 ай бұрын
@@asftyeedyy4576 I don't want anything other than to live my life with my family. Currently where I live our state legislators are pushing through laws that will null my marriage to my wife and make it harder, if not impossible, for us to continue to foster. If it wasn't for federal protections that Project 2025 wants to take away from the LGBTQ community then those laws go through. So my bare minimum is to treat me and my wife like you would a straight couple in the eyes of the law, no more, no less.

As someone who has worked for hotel chains - we can spot it and report it, but if no one does anything with the information we report there’s not much we can personally do without risking our jobs due to not going through the chain of command. I once had suspicions of human trafficking but they only put 1 name on the room, refused to provide the other names, and left before management came back in the morning.
