It would be nice to see a documentary about the watchmakers who originally developed the manufacturing techniques for mechanical calculators.

Agreed. There are many sources for the development of horology and the matchmakers. Few of the early calculators give credit to who the watchmaker was, if that was an independent one. Philipp Hahn, for example trained his protégés.

I was about to say the same, the working principle is very similar, at least on a superficial level not sure about the more inner workings like carry etc.: I guess that going from a popularity to a historical point of view we could say the curta is a miniature of this machine
