I thank the PPO director and conductor for a rare orchestral entertainment to the Calbayog people. I like the classical selections better; that's what the orchestra has been trained for. As for the pop and big band music, they are the consumerist and commercial kind of music that caters to the audience who are mostly hooked on modern popular shows replete with commercial advertisements, thus the popular appeal. I wish that music should primarily educate and edify the minds and souls of people and preserve their cultural heritage. If people are not familiar with the musical composition, then it should be introduced so as to inform the people the context and the purpose for which the music was written. Popular music might be enjoyable but it does not edify the soul neither preserve the culture that is threatened to vanish. You can hear popular music anywhere and in the ballrooms, but it does not preserve the one's that are about to disappear. How about Filipino classics like Dandansoy, Sa Kabukiran, Sampaguita, Hating Gabi, etc.? I wish more classical music can be played, though they might initially turn off many listeners, but if the audience is informed and educated about the pieces, they will eventually appreciate them and preserve the same to posterity. Just an opinion.
