What an amazing experience playing music with Igorots way up in the mountains of the Philippines...
These gongs hand made in Mankayan Benguet are like TREASURES. That is how I would describe them. They shimmer with beauty and the sound is truly mesmerizing. I didn't know that gongs were made for centuries in Barangay BedBed, Mankayan. But having the chance to experience this part of Igorot culture on my solo adventure into the Cordilleras was truly something I will always appreciate.
This was spontaneous... but certainly an adventure I will treasure for a long time.
Have you ever seen gongs at celebrations involving Igorots? Now you know where they may have came from :)
Power On!

You went roaming around Mindanao to show the world that not all of it is as dangerous as what has always been depicted. And again, there you are in the Cordilleras, breaking another stigma, showing the world that we Igorots or people from the Cordillera mountains, are just as normal and civilized as the rest of our countrymen. Thank you Kyle for sharing your discoveries about the diversity of Philippine culture. Take care always! 😊

Thank you... been your subscriber since the beginning and felt good to see you now introducing my culture and heritage. Igorots are still currently discriminated against by the people of the lowlands especially Manila & tagalog speaking areas. I hope that people from different provinces will now see in your videos that Igorots are not "ignorant, ugly (short, dark, with a tail that looked like a monkey), scary, barbaric, etc." Even here in Canada I still encounter Filipinos discriminating against my heritage & culture. I continue to inform them that Igorots are not barbaric, uncultured, ignorant & monkeys.

Thank you for making us hear the sound of the gongs. Hearing it is nostalgic and the views you show lessens the homesickness. Your contents are very informative and at the same time helpful to the Cordilleran community in making others realize that we don't have tails nor do we have a primitive way of living. Sadly, there are still people who, when they hear the word Igorot, they think of illiterate and uneducated people. Through your platform, you're reaching more than what the primary history textbooks could reach. Iyaman kabsat!

You're so tirelessly travel places that so impossible to reach. My admiration for your tenacity. Naturewise, Apayao is pure nature rarely touched by the majority. Take care of yourself wherever you go. Ingat ng maigi. God bless!

Rhythm is gonna get you - heard of that song by Gloria Stefan? It looked like you've got the right move and the rhythm sampling those Gongs! There used to be a big pine tree right where you are standing. The basketball court used to be open, no roof. The stair going up the municipal building and the terrace on the right side used to be made with stones and rocks. People used to set on the terrace and watched what's going on the basket ball court. Obviously, there's a lot of changes. Watching you in front of the Municipal building brought a lot of childhood memories. I went to school with some of the people that are working in the municipal building from elementary to high school. What's amazing in this town is that "there is no such thing as POVERTY" back in the day. Everybody are engage one way or another to making something, make extra income, working in the mining, vegetable farming, people engage in selling merchandises, butchering their animals, chickens and such and they sell during market day which are Saturdays and Sundays. Their way of livelihood is sustainable except the mining. And now, another type of business is introduced: Gong manufacturing - that's amazing! As always, the municipal hall looked busy judging from the video. Again, I can't thank you enough, your video is truly an amazing advertisement for the town. In the past, there's been a negative view and misunderstanding about Igorot people. They were depicted differently. Igorot people are high achievers. They do not advertise their accomplishments. They are subtle. Education is very important to them. Your video is a solid testament, the kind of people they are. They truly are approachable and remarkable people. Did you get the chance to meeting some people in the municipal hall yet? Here' are few names that came to mind: Greta Almora, Ansing Ambas, Amy Santos, Leonora Marrero I think she's the dentist of the town, the Palaroan's runs a pharmacy. In case you get stuck, these people can help you. I hope to watch more of your Mankayan video. I hope local authorities/officials will see your video to convince them that improving the roads going to Mankayan, connecting other towns, barrios and barangays are worth improving. I kept watching the video over and over again. Never thought of the aerial view is beautiful. The verdant hills and mountains are incomparable. Mankayan is a potential tourists spot. If you move from town to town, example going to Cervantes, Ilocos Sur, go to their municipal hall and check for security purposes, a place to spent the night and where to eat. Talking to the authorities help you find tourist attraction spots. Have a good time and enjoy what Mankayan can offer! Have a safe journey. Marlon should pay you for shouting out his business - make money!
