Our ancestral lands/domains comprising our forest, ricefield, river systems, atmosphere, et.. are the base of our culture and traditional institutions. In protecting, nurturing and sustaining our ancestral lands/domains, we are also protecting, nurturing and sustaining our cultures and traditional institutions like the mumbaki. Thus the need to capacitate the people and local/traditional institutions. Organizing the mumbaki is a good move, for them to support each other and to generate/build support system from other people/organizations.

My lolo too was a "maboki" or "mumbaki". He was a well known mumbaki in their village according to my mother. He was Lolo Likyayyu. How I wish I witnessed an actual baki. This for sure is just a glimpse, this is just a tiny tiny facet of the whole thing but I'm glad I came accross this video. At least it satisfied my curiousity, I am now turning 30 and for some reason the interest in exploring our culture is growing. There are practices that are long gone now, and baki is one.

I would love to know more about my culture. Sad to think that our culture is shrinking. Anyhow, if there are videos that showcases the Ifugao culture, please comment below so that I can watch too. 😁 Hoping to learn more.

Thankful that the Northern part of Philippines still practice the pre colonial culture. Most preserved and isolated region. Lowlanders might Christianized but many are still practicing acient culture unconsciously if you really observed the inside core beliefs of Filipinos on their daily lives. Example for that is "tabi tabi po".

Take comfort in that there is a fast-growing enthusiasm in the Filipino diaspora all over the world for learning of our indigenous roots. Despite the social media backlash we seem to get about not being "Filipino enough." This current generation of children of immigrants are hungry to learn about the true indigenous peoples and precolonial practices of the Philippines. However, I seem to notice a conglomeration of the practices right now, where in Fil-Am festivals or groups they will have for example, a kulintang demonstration on one side and then a promotion of "native tattoos" on another, without much acknowledgment of a tribal significance for those tattoos. We are still navigating and disentangling the notion that precolonial Filipinos are not necessarily a monolith. The ancient histories go far, far back into numerous peoples and tribes that are separate in their own cultural/ethnolinguistic ways, yet forever united by being the original peoples of the land. Even if not all of us may not amount to becoming practitioners, we are willing to have more open minds about these practices. I hope it's true for more of us, but I think these ways should never be considered as "evil."

In this Era of Climate Change (1995-2175+), new Gravitation to "One Times Two Times Three" (before 1995 it was "One Times Two") has an impending effect to planet Earth in almost everything, in technology and humanity. The mainstream of Climate Change is Agriculture, thus followed by Business sectors; however, Vocational course are recommended to augment livelihood and whatever practical needs of life. The return to Traditionalism, both in Culture and beliefs is a necessity for Survivalism, much more to the Basic necessities of life. It is necessary to strengthen the Individual, family, clan, tribe, and community in the reality and realm of Survivalism. I hasten to add that my old Patriarch used the Tobacco soaked in water in kerosene can for 1-3:days, filter it, then spray it to vegetables, corn, and plants to have a plentiful harvest in Central Mindanao when they migrated in 1937 from Luzon Island. That I share as a contribution to traditional agriculture. Pant more hard wood trees with fruits to strenthen the soils and bedrocks, bamboo for prevent erosion on riverbanks and make use of traditional means to protect the environment. I appreciate the tribal cultures in the Ifugao lands, in the Coldillera region. I am a Researcher and sharing all these for the welfare of humanity. God bless everyone.

Baki depends on anyones perception, if its in your culture well then that is not evil because that's part of it and its a way to feel the essence of being an Ifugao. Evrytime my titos held a baki I feel like Im back to my childhood days and feel great to myself I have a tradition like this. It's also a way to preserve ifugao culture. I agree. The Ifugaos know how to plant rice and how to maintain their rice terraces. I think the Ifugaos should continue with the way they have farmed for centuries instead of trying new ways of farming introduced by businesspeople. Stick to the old ways because they’ve been working for the ifugaos for centuries.
