Happy New Year, Kulas, Therine, Kumar, and your whole Cateel family. I love watching your slice of life vids, it makes me super nostalgic for the Ph. I loved your New Year Media Noche. When we lived in the Ph, we had Media Noche on very formulaic lines. Always lechon, because it's a celebratory food. Never chicken, because they scratch the dirt to look for food, and you don't want to scratch for food in the new year. Always at least 2-3 types of noodles, for long life. Arroz Valenciana, like Paella, because it's sticky rice and will keep the family together. Palitaw, which has to be cooked near midnight so they are floating on the water as midnight comes in. Biko, also because its sticky rice. No crabs, because live crabs pull each other down in their natural habitat, and you don't want that. My mum would have hard-boiled eggs prepared and eaten hefore any food on the table is eaten because it's supposed to represent life. And yes, going to a nearby beach to bathe in the ocean, to wash away last year's negativity, is also a thing we did. Back in the late 70s-early 80s, we went to Roxas Blvd, because the water used to be clean and people bathed there all the time. After it became dirty, we began going to Cavite, to a place called Lido Beach. Again, have a blessed 2025!

Yes it’s inasal aka Lechon for us too that my Papà butchered & roasted for our midnight fare, the exotic fruit salad loaded with akong & nata de piña, lumpia fresco and the whole shebang eaten right after the fireworks display that lasted for about half an hour! Everyone in our compound is out and about welcoming the New Year & wishing a Happy & prosperous New Year. Miss these traditions in our beautiful island of Cebu. Kulas, to minimize efforts in cleaning cookware, after you transfer the food to the serving dish, pour some soapy water on the dirty, oily cookware while it's still hot and boil it for about 3-5 minutes. Let it stand like that on the sink while you're eating until it's time to finally wash the dishes. The trick is, not to let those burnt food bits cool down on the pan because it will be tough to remove.

Ma'ayong Bagong Tuig! From Hilo, HI. So funny but started deep cleaning 2 days before New Years! My mom insisted we have a clean house on New Yrs & don't fight w/your asawa becuz what you do on the 1st day of the year represents what the new year will be. Also, I made garlic noodles cuz my mom said must eat noodles on New Years for Longevity. These customs are impeded in my being 😅. Your home looks so beautiful now that your plants & trees have grown.
