I love Kumander's curiosity and his open mind about different cultures, which is something many people struggle with due to their upbringing. He is also very courageous, traveling to unknown parts of the world and conquering obstacles with ease, all the while laughing and smiling. Thank you, Kumander, for taking us on your journey.

The designs of the traditional fishing devices of various Filipino ethnic groups are always fascinating, because they're always so ingenuous. And a lot of them were probably invented thousands of years ago. Like the fish corrals found throughout the Philippines.

Appreciate this vlog so much. A lot of things I don't know about the history of Marawi and the rich culture of the Maranaos. Enjoyed the tour of the museum. Proud of the Maranao people, esp. the craftsmen who continue to make those beautiful wood carvings and the intricate shell inlaid furniture pieces. Thank you for appreciating the wood carver's invention. He deserved to be featured in your vlog for the wonderful work that he does. Love lake Lanao. It's beautiful and mystical. Another awesome vlog!

What an awesome museum the Aga Khan Museum is. Such a beautiful resource for the community. I love how they are preserving their culture right down to the carpentry of the craftsman woodworker you met. I like his ingenious inventions. That one looked like a homemade drill press. Nanay from the museum was really funny!🤣 She would make a visit to the museum especially enjoyable.

That "princess house" reminds me of the pataka houses of the Māori people in New Zealand. They were also used to isolate royalty. There's an ancient connection there, since the ancestors of both the Maori and Filipinos are Austronesians. The torogan houses themselves are very similar to numerous other Austronesian houses. Including the different rumah of Indonesia and Malaysia, and the one from ancient Guam which used rock pillars called haligi. Ancient Austronesian houses tended to be communal. With very large buildings that accommodate multiple families. I have a feeling the "palaces" described in Spanish records of other Filipino ethnic groups were very similar to its design as well. Sadly none were recorded, and wood rots, so their designs were lost, though some elements are still preserved in bahay na bato architecture (though the area under the stilts, the silong, were walled and turned into the ground floor).

I'm curious, are any of the ancient Maranao ships/canoes preserved in Lake Lanao? I think they're called awang. The panolong (the wing-like carved decorations) of the torogan houses actually originate from the prow design of those boats, probably because the original houses from the very ancient past were probably built on several boats and actually floating on the water (i.e. a catamaran) or at least built on beached boats. It would be sad if they're all gone.
@KumanderDaotАй бұрын
I didn't see an awang on the lake, but there was one in the museum.
@AngryKittensАй бұрын
@@KumanderDaot Oh I think I see it in the background somewhat in 1:22 2:44 and 3:48. But it's sad they don't exist in real life anymore. :( The awang was incredibly important in Maranao history, as evidenced by how much of their art was influenced by the boat design. The panolong and the boat shapes are found not only in torogan houses, but in musical instruments and containers.
