Tension between the Philippines and China: Conflicting claims over ocean waters in Southeast Asia has led to tense ship encounters. The Philippines is stepping up its defense of the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. China claims it as Chinese territory and has controlled it for the past decade. The Philippines, in turn, has insisted its fishermen have the right to continue to access those waters - and in recent months, have backed up its warnings, with action.

As a Filipino American, who served and retired from the US Navy, we operated across and around those waters without any restriction. I was stationed aboard the USS Midway from 1977 through 1979. We were never challenged by anyone and there was complete freedom of navigation for any entity. China wants dialogue, but, do not know how to abide by any commitment. they make. They should not be allowed to continue to do what they are doing now. With their arrogance, the UN does not seem to take charge in demanding China to back off from their aggression. Simply shows that the UN is toothless and useless. The very reason why I would support the US defunding the organization and breaking off from it and kicking them out of New York

From the Chinese pov, the Philippines was a lost cause due to the fact that it had US bases on its soil and was a former US colony. In the event of a conflict they will always side with the Americans. No amount of influence or soft power would change that. China's backyard is littered with US bases, so they're doing what any rising power will do, go on the aggressive and start fortifying islands to counter US bases. Of course the UN will be powerless, as they were when US invaded, bombed and destabilized whole regions of the world to their liking. The world was never fair, and world powers did what they wished. Hopefully the future will be multipolar.

The Philippines is not intruding or not even made a violation in their actions, the shoal is located inside the Philippine EEZ. The Chinese is the one violating the international law of the sea and the claim of China has no concrete basis, the Chinese signed in UNCLOS agreement in 1994 which embodies all the nations to have their own share in the said ocean. The Chinese also said that their reason is the inherent, it is also has no basis, this ocean has been used by all the nations since the very beginning through exchanging their goods known as the barter trade. All nations near the spratley islands has the rights to claim because of their traditional fishing since the very beginning. Their the one who first swim and fish in the early morning before other far countries like China to do their fishing. So any reason of China to claim their rights has no basis. It is only a work of covetousness and greed who claims that the entire ocean is his.

The Philippines is an archipelago not China. If we checked China's constitution since 1914, 1924, 1937, and 1947 Hainan is the southernmost part. Beijing keeps changing their claim with no historical maps or facts to present. China did not bother take any territories when the former US bases where there since 1993, who has been protecting the freedom of navigation.

Philippines have a 17th Century Map to prove that the Scarborough Shoal was part of the Philippines, historically speaking. The Sultanate of Sulu also has another old map that can support this historical claims..So Philippines not only has historical, but also sovereign rights under UNCLOS. Going to war against the Philippines would be the worst decision China can make. Not only would it drag the US into the war, it would also tie up resources they could have used to invade Taiwan. South China Sea has been renamed West Philippine Sea.

Exclusive Economic Zone or EEZ of countries per UNCLOS covers 200 nautical miles (nmi) from the a country's coastline. For Philippines, this 200 nautical miles EEZ facing the South China Sea is called the West Philippine Sea. Outside of the legal EEZ of the Philippines is the South China Sea. Only the Philippines has the legal right to exploit the natural resources within this EEZ. Nobody owns the South China Sea. China has their own 200 nautical miles EEZ from their own coastline. The artificial Islands China built illegally in the South China Sea and Spratlys Islands does not have EEZ and can not be used to claim territory. Scarborough Shoal is well within the Philippines EEZ and China is illegally patrolling this area to claim it as its own territory. The Hague Arbitral Tribunal has ruled against China claim of this Shoal.

@@peterchan3889 As i stated, nobody owns South China Sea. India does no own Indian Ocean, Drawing lines on the map does not equate to owning those territories. This issue in this area only cropped up in recent times due to re drawing of maps. This area has been peaceful for a long time. There is UNCLOS which governs this in the legal domain.
