I get it, people want less "strong" coffee so it sells. But any machine that can't produce a normal espresso should not be allowed to be sold as an espresso machine. Give us a "normal" espresso as default setting and build it to tune it down if so.

I enjoy way these laid back style reviews by Tom. Was close to ordering a Philips 2200 but afer much research have just ordered a Magnifica Evo Long to replace our six year old (now leaking) Nespresso. Looking forward to playing with it next week. The amount of money spend on pods i don't think it will take long to pay for itself.

I compared Philips 3200 vs Delonghi Magnifica Evo when I was deciding what to buy. Ultimately I bought Magnifica Evo. I agree with him about the cover of the water tank and milk frother. Also, I read how difficult to get a customer representative compared to Delonghi where you can call/chat/email. I'm so happy with my Magnifica Evo. But I still kept my Instant Dual pod for those time i like flavored coffee from keurig and nespresso. Yup, coffee addict 🤣

I found one of these 3200's from the e-recycle bin, I have no idea how much coffee it has done, but it was broken. The main fault was the silicone main water tube from pump had wear through as it rubbed against the Plasti wall inside the machine, there is molded silicone tube that has bad mold and it leaves one side of the tube wall paper thin. A simple protection spring or foam would fix this, but Philips saved money. Next problem was steam valve not working, fix that from another e-recycle machine, De'Longhi button coffee maker, easy fix. Next problem was brew group leaking from seals, stupid design, De'Longhi brew group got better design. Next problem was milk canister leaking, as it is only silicone wall against cup that prevents this. Little lubricant to o-rings and milk cup does the job. Next issue with these is how large cup you have to have get milk and coffee together in the same time. Also amount of water goin to cup is way too little in second settings and way too much for third setting. In all I do like this drinks this machine does, but it is very badly designed and cheap. I have dismantled this machine completely, fixed it and gave it to my sister. I have De'Longhi Dynamica plus and it is better.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thank you. Don't get me wrong; this machine makes good coffee and I actually liked the milk foam it makes. It is an easy machine to fix and simple silicone tube, food grade lubricant and descale to prevent valves going bad, time to time goes for a long time. But simple things like "go/stop" button not working correctly, cheap soft plastic, how it throws little bit coffee grinds of the brew group, cup sizes being so odd and I added rubber feet under it, so it doesn't make so loud noise, these little thing that makes you feel it's on cheap side.

At the beginning the maximum grounds dose is 8 g, but after a few dozens of coffees the pucks can reach 10 g. I normally use 9.5 g of finelly ground coffee, ground in an external grinder.

Thanks for your input. This machine is quite used actually - I made a bunch of measurements, and the most I got out was 7-8 grams. This was consistent with the new 2200 that I had bought. Cheers!

I had a Magnifica for many years and had it repaired and serviced a couple of times before finally losing it to a house fire. Right now I am using a Flair, medium roast coffee with a flat burr grinder, 18-19g, and a Breville milk frother with about 6ozs of whole milk. The trick with the frother is to not overheat the milk, which will cause the foam to separate too much. The jug is so large that you can swirl the milk in it to get a paint like texture. I am not into late art, so the spout does not matter. As to Phillips, I have bought several different products from them over the years and they have been nice, but short of best in class. They also have dropped product lines on me so when I go back to buy again I usually end up buying another brand.
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience, Tom! I am sure the Flair is nice to use - which one? 58? Anyway, thanks for the idea with the Breville frother. I didn't know they got such good texture. Cheers!
@TomJones-tx7pb
@TomJones-tx7pb 2 ай бұрын
@@TomsCoffeeCorner My comment was really to add context for my opinion on the Phillips, which is pretty weak given that I have not used it. However, you can see similar opinions in the comments. Phillips did not keep spare parts available for repair when they discontinue my expensive product of theirs. I have the Flair 58 with the heater, which I have insulated to get better temperature stability. To improve this further, I would like to cut out most of a light bottomless portafilter and insulate the basket inside it, but that is beyond my current abilities and tools. To aid in getting better texture with the Breville, I preheat things a little bit to cut down on the amount of froth it produces. If it had a way to dial down the frothing aggression it would be perfect for my workflow and desired water content.

Could you do a review on the Philips 5500 series? It has 5 settings for strength, curious if this makes a difference + iced coffee
@TonyJaa1984
@TonyJaa1984 4 күн бұрын
That's interessting. The 3200/3300 has strength option "1-3 beans". Now the big question is.. Is the 5500 able to grind more coffee when set to 4 or 5 beans of strength or is 5 the same amount as it's 3 on the 3xxx. I think 1-5 is just an option to do fine adjusting the strength when 5 is the same amount of grinded coffee like it's 3 at the 3xxx series. But i don't know.

Thanks for the great review Tom! Well, I've been looking at this machine as a possible replacement for our aging Jura. The price on a m a z o n (USA) is a bit hectic to say at least. $450 being the lowest, $1353 being the highest. Than't right! I have screenshots lol! Every day a different price. For example, Yesterday the price was $1289, Today it's $549. No other machine changes price like this one. Unbelievable. Anyways, we are going to go with a DeLonghi most likely when time comes.

Lavazza Aromatico does not seem to be offered by Lavazza USA. Another one I was interested in was their "Gusto Forte", which they rate as 13/13 in terms of intensity. The products are available, but the shipping cost was sort of high and the delivery time a month off.... like it was being mailed from Italy or whatever. I went with a $17 kilo of Caffee Borbone 100% Robusta, which is a whole different world. I like it straight or mixed with some Arabica.

I watched a lot of Tom's videos. IMO, he does an excellent job "selling" the machine (so to speak) so the company reps love him. Tom also mentions what he does not like about it in an off-hand way. In in this case the drinks were 'light' and the grinder is limited. Most amusing to me was the HiBrew videos when Tom was repeatedly amazed the machine is so light enthusiastically noting "you could lift it with one finger it is so light" spoken as if being lightweight is a good thing. :):)
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 2 ай бұрын
Lol, no I lifted up the HiBrew to show how light it was, as a bad thing, not a good thing. But that machine actually works quite well despite the weight. Anyway, I try not to bash any company or product, but be fair with my assessment, as a lot of design goes into these, and also a lot of people will really be fans of them. But for me, I'd never recommend it over a similarly priced Delonghi.
@SunriseLAW

@@TomsCoffeeCorner I only drink it w/o milk. For me, the GCP is perfect. Re: HiBrew.. I had the order ready, all I had to do was push the PAY button but that is when I found the gently used GCP on local FB for $350 w. lots of accessories. I have not looked back. as tempted by a Rancillo Pro selling on local FB for $1,000 but I just would not use most of the extra features and the duel boiler probably just slows it down and adds to the maintenance. I wonder how many people actually use their PID, etc.
