Wow that is one cool radio, sounds great as well. Europe must take radio listening much more serious then we here in the States. I can recall when I was a boy, we had a huge floor model radio that had all those shortwave stations listed, and the big speaker put out some very nice music as well, it was a used set that father purchased at a farm auction. Sadly when we moved to town, the small apartment we first moved to had no room for such luxuries so it was left in the old farm house, vandals destroyed everything we left out there, some very nice furniture as well as the old radio set and the old battery farm radio that was out there as well. Damn kids.

Shows you Philips David, almost 60 years after manufacturing the owner needs to be educated about the working of the knobs. But it has some logic: the top three sound colour buttons are presets, and you need to get them off to use the pot. Cheap choice only not to include an off button too. Hope you are both well there, and make it a great year !

The balance string gave me the hebejebes. I was lead astray but the last guys attempt at restringing it. When I realised the second spring didn't move thanks to Manuel's video the penny dropped. Hi David this comment has nothing to do with this video. I watched your video on your DIM bulb tester I noticed on the front panel I could not see a earth connected to the metal front panel. Many years ago(60years ago) I made a very similar power supply with a wooden box but no earth connected to the metal front panel. The active shorted to the metal case of the power switch which caused the panel to became alive. It gave me a huge boot. This comment is offered purely as a precaution I hope you don't mind me offering some safety advise for anybody making a similar supply Thanks David🤗
@DavidTipton1012 ай бұрын
Good point Bruce, it's always best to be extra careful with mains electricity. Of course, because the supply the the box is through an isolated power supply there is no earth present but others may not connect it that way 👍🙂
@brucehutton2089Ай бұрын
Hi David i did my apprenticeship in a large milk factory as an A grade electrician. My experience has taught me to only trust a good solid earth on all metallic parts. Although I am an experienced technician and electronic engineer i always remember good earthing is infallible. I too would always use a isolation transformer but anything can go wrong including the most sophisticated modern equipment. I also learnt the hard way 😂 on my power supply panel and wooden box many years ago. Thankyou so much for your reply, always great to hear from you.🫠

What an interesting radio. Thanks for showing it to us. The notes at 11:20 mentioned something about the speakers being 800 ohm and transformerless output (whatever that means). Would love to see that explained.
@DavidTipton1012 жыл бұрын
Thanks Seiskid. I think there was an attempt to match the speaker impedance to the output impedance and do away with the output transformer. There is still an output transformer in this radio so I don't really know what was going on. 800 ohm would require a higher voltage and lower current, maybe there is a sound advantage there 🤔
@highpath47762 жыл бұрын
@@DavidTipton101 If it is stereo that would be more (heavy) components, one is effectively using the speaker magent as the o/p transformer stage ( as really the speakers wont care how or from what they get a signal to move , though I tend to prefer the buffer of isolation but then I am used to remote wander speakers that need a little ompph to work

Hi Ian. thank you. I bet tech's would not like doing restrings in the shop, a lot of wasted time for little return I should think. lol, Darn it, 3am, one last check before sleep, now I am up for another half hour :P New dial string..... OH MY, I think the devil himself thinks up half of the rigging himself! I like the inset of the test displays, very nice. Buzz, buzz buzz, you never can tell what you will say! I love the diffuser panel from TVs, well worth salvaging. You went very quickly over "slider" spray into the control, so many people make the mistake of using D5 in pots and depending on the pot design, that can wipe out the control. What an odd balance display but nice job on the new part. Another excellent job done!
@DavidTipton1012 жыл бұрын
Big mistake Wayne, at least it's only a short one 🙂 Oh, you added more. The rigging was OK, I've done worse. I said Fader spray when I did the volume control, I used Deoxit D5 for the switch contacts. The balance display had me stumped until I realised the previous attempt was wrong, it was r-e-a-s-o-n-a-b-l-y simple to work out then and with the help of Manuel of course.

It was quite typical for European radios to have FM from 88 to 102 back in the early 60's. That was the frequency allocation at the time. I can't remember what year they extended the band, but it was after this. I have a late 50's Grundig 4019 and FM stops at 102MHz on that also. Those mustard coloured Philips caps, as far as I recall, likely should be replaced as well as the tend to leak. Mixed information about them, but I usually replace them. Philips made some amazing radios in this era. Some were quite unique and usually all sound amazing :).
@DavidTipton1012 жыл бұрын
Hi Brendan, most of the European radios I have stop at 100 or 104 if I'm lucky. The Philips mustard caps are getting to be a mixed bag, I have had a few fail while Ohers are perfect. Thanks Brendan 🙂
@Ragnar85042 жыл бұрын
The mustard caps are early polyester film I think and generally have a good reputation. I haven't had any fail myself but most of the stuff I've worked on was slightly older and didn't have many of them. As far as I can tell Philips slowly transitioned from wax/paper to film between about 1959 and 1962. I tested some of those mustard caps for leakage at 500 V DC and they were perfect, off-scale high, while paper caps (even those encapsulated in some kind of resin) have all turned into resistors in the low MΩ range or even lower.

This morning, I was glad to see another David Tipton video. I must say that you seem to have nailed down the progression of detective work in these restorations. BTW, I tried to send a specific amount of coffee funds, but there seems to be a limit attached to the coffee site, so I will send an amount for the next couple days until I cover for each of your 116 videos which I have watched more than once, and enjoyed! Have a Great weekend down there in Australia! -Chris

Hi Dave, First and foremost, A Happy New Year to you and your family. The moment this Philips radio appeared at the beginning of this video I began thinking, “Oh dear: you poor bugger!” I know it is easy to expect the worst - it is a Philips - being a law unto themselves, so often their radios could be either heaven or hell but this one turned out to be a reasonably straightforward repair. I remember that table-top stereo range, including the model you had on your bench. They could develop some very unpleasant to repair faults. Such a pity as Philips radios, for the large part, were fairly good performers, and their 4 and above range table models sounded great. It was like Philips tried so hard, but never quite reached the level of excellence of a few other well known European brands such as Telefunken, Braun, B&O, Grundig etc. I guess Manuel would testify to that! Cheers my friend, Phil.
@DavidTipton1012 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, Happy New Year to you and your wife. Philips have a reputation for doing things the hard way, luckily I didn't have any unpleasant faults with this one. The radio works very well, I was impressed. Manuel has had his fair share of Philips peculiarities, he gets over most of them I think. Thanks Phil 🙂

@@DavidTipton101 I wonder if that card "balance" idea actually is just a meaningless device to avoid copyright of similar ? (grundig?) units or to create a copyright/ patent design feature ? Maybe an idea to add useless / solution to non-existant problem things to your next club radio entry ?

To think that LP records were pushed aside for mp3 files on iPods. They are now being rediscovered due to their “warmer” sound. Wouldn’t it be grand to see the resurrection of vacuum tube technology! Sound sounds more authentic to have a little bit of crackling in the background.

Another great job. The magic eye didn't respond much on FM, could that be normal for this radio. I know how you felt with the paint coming off on the tuning dial, because it is the main thing you look at on a radio and perhaps the outer cabinet also. It's something you have to except with a radio of that age. I does look like a nice radio, which sounds great.

My congratulations to you on the new year and on the release of the first video this year!!! Your channel is gaining popularity . This is immediately evident by the number of new haters ..)) I didn't quite understand what was at the beginning of the video. It was an advertisement for wear-resistant underwear that lasts for 30-40 years or something else??.)) I somehow came across this person's videos. I want to say that he is either very eccentric, Or just attracts the audience in this way to his channel ..))) In the end, you also had a hand in advertising his channel, oddly enough. Oh well. The year 2023 has arrived . Time will tell whether this year will be good or bad .
