That dev player (602) is actually based on the original CD-i 910 system. It's also using the same bios. Just as with the 910, the DIN style input #1 is reserved for a CD-i (and IIRC the rollerball), and input #2 works with CD-i control pads.

2:08 it is not a proprietary device to use CDs (unless it has some memory chip for things like saving games), it is the first way the Compact Disc format was intended to be used by the people. Instead of trays and handling the discs themselves as we all use, the discs were supposed to be protected under these caddies like a floppy disc or a better, recent example is the UMD for the PSP.

In Sweden, we usually refer to the middle pin as Earth instead of Ground as it's not required to be connected with the Neutral. Earthed means it has a way to dissipate current away from the chassis, but where it could still be a potential between Earth and Neutral, if it's a Ground, then the Earth and Neutral are connected, meaning that it's an Earth-referenced ground/neutral.

RC port on the back is for a Remote Control iR receiver extender. Useful for when your CD-i unit is in a stereo rack setup where the remote might have trouble reaching. It's meant to be placed on top of your TV set since that's where you'd naturally be aiming while using it.

Wow that Mario game looks so different. Very cool rare item. Also love your videos. I work midnights at a grocery store and listen to your videos 8 hours a night. Never get sick of your videos. Anyway keep up the awesome videos. Just this year. I got a sega master system, sega gensis, sega cd and a sega saturn. Also got a turbo graphx 16 too. I wanted a gensis but didnt know about the other ones. Also got a n64 was a Nintendo kid until playstation when I stopped with the super Nintendo. Thanks for all you do and sorry about rambling. My guess is that the front port was made for the mouse only to ease up The developement and then you'd have a controller hooked up to the back port to test a more traditional console game content. Just a personal hunch, though.

It wasn't that they put a special drive in there to make things difficult for developers. They just used a PC drive. Back then, most desktop PC drives used disc caddies. You'd go to a library or a school and they'd have all their software pre-loaded into a caddy for you to use with their computers. It prevented people from mishandling the discs. The dev machines were engineered before the consumer machines so they had not engineered a drive with a tray yet. It stands to reason that they would use an existing PC drive for a dev unit.

The apprentice is actually one of the best platform games i ever played and is a hidden gem on the CDI. If people think cuphead bosses are hard they should def try this gem out because it is brutally hard. The playthrough wich isn't mine is a version running on an emulator so it's missing the sound effects sadly in this vid. Every world the character changes with the world to the second being turned in to a frog and so on. First world is forgiving but each time a world changes it gets harder like 100 times more than the world before kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5enh4utobllfqM
