Philips CDR775 CD Player / Recorder - Doesn't Want to Play Discs!

Here we have a rather snazzy joint CD player and recorder from Philips, dating from around the turn of the millennium.
Now with its ability to both play and record from an input without a PC, this would be very handy. However it appears to have been stored in a dustbowl for all its life.
Can it be saved or improved? Join me in a full clean and service.

I bought one of those in the early 2000s and it was one of the worst purchases I've ever made. It rarely functioned properly and it destroyed those expensive CD-R Audio discs when trying to record on them, over and over and over, and when I first wanted to have it serviced, it was not possible and then when I wanted another functioning CD-player/recorder they had been dropped from the stores. They offered me as replacement a crappy minidisc recorder (which I did not need since I had one already) that was just as unreliable. Well ... the chain of stores where I bought it was bankrupt some years later .... no wonder why.

Good video.. just to make you aware if you aren't already, the ribbon connector end from the laser unit can be very very sensitive to esd, it can result in a destroyed laser when disconnected and then the end of the ribbon touched by fingers etc, some aren't to bad, but some will be completely knackered if you touch them, just thought I'd let you know if you didn't already, so if you do the same as you did in this machine to a different more sensitive one, you will possibly end up with a dead laser unit, there are certain laser units that you need to solder across an area linking it together before disconnection, to stop an electro static charge killing the unit, you can usually find info in the service manual for the particular machine you're working on, if you can find the service manual for a player, check it before jumping in to strip a machine down... It's very satisfying repairing cd players, many people just think the laser is dead if a machine doesn't read a disc, but in my experience its very seldom the laser that's the problem, if a good clean and lube doesn't sort things, check the power supply next, capacitors sometimes age, although that is far less common than you will read about, its a silly trend that you should replace the electrolytic capacitors in anything that's a few years old, where in fact many will last for 3, 4 or 5 decades without problems.. anyways enjoy yourself, and i'll sub your channel and hopefully watch more of your fixes, cheers fae Fife.

I've had them fixed temporarily by just adjusting the laser pot. My current Pioneer has been turning and burning for two years now after just a small tweak, I had expected it to die in short order but hasn't!

You have a dual disc Philips CD Recorder. You did not show whether or not it would recognize Digital Audio discs. The left tray is for recording on a blank digital audio disc. Look closely at the Logo next to the tray, it will say Digital Audio. It will not record on regular computer discs! The right tray is for playback, and will play virtually any recorded disc. The left tray can also be used to playback... I used a Philips CDR765 Dual Deck Recorder I bought brand new for nearly 20 years to master my analog tapes from a tape deck to CD to create digital masters of our music and never had any issues until about two years ago when it quit. One must periodically use a laser lens cleaner disc to make sure it will read properly. Some of the comments suggest that they didn't read the Manual which clearly states that Digital Audio Discs must be used to record.

It did in the end, it performed beautifully for a good few months until I moved onto a different player

Nice video. I fixed a similar model. However now I am finding a CDR802 harder to fix..I'm thinking some capacitors might need changing.

I admit that I cringe a little bit with the metal spudger so close to the electronics. I'm surprised that you don't use some plastic spudgers for those areas. I assume you haven't had problems scratching the PCB's or any such thing yet.

I was surprised this worked in all honesty - that wasn't all that dusty and I've never had much luck cleaning CD mechs - generally when they're gone they're gone, and if they aren't Sony or Sanyo based good luck getting new lasers for them, especially recorders.

I ummed and ahhed about getting one of these for a while but ultimately thought what's the point if you have a PC and it does the job far far better?

@@createdezign1840 Thing is though, to this day they are the most convenient way of getting a high quality, lossless analogue-to-digital dub of a "legacy" format - ADCs connected to computers very often have poor fidelity and high noise.

@@jasejj "ADCs connected to computers very often have poor fidelity and high noise" - True, I suppose I'm not thinking of recording from an analogy source. But "copying" on a computer will be a bit perfect copy both in quality and layout depending on the software used. As I've said previously I've been thinking of getting a CD-R but ultimately I think I'll hold out for a reel to reel. :) Love your channel by the way. :)

Time for a laser swap I think. You can try one thing, on the laser unit there is a small potentiometer which essentially cranks up the laser power. If you can give that a turn it might resurrect it. Try it twice though - sometimes turning left turns it up. I can't remember which way to turn these off hand to turn it up. It will decrease the lifespan of the laser but it's better than not working at all!

Beware! I believe the Philips (and Marantz) CD consumer grade recorders will only record onto pre formatted CD AUDIO discs. They won't accept normal computer grade CDR's or CDRW's A quick Google search shows Audio Blanks are few and far between.

That's true they have to be "CD-R Music" CDs, but still very easy to get hold of and not that expensive. I believe that originally they had an extra tax tariff put on them to counter piracy. Although I love defunct recording formats I feel that standalone CD-Rs separates are kind of pointless if you have a laptop or desktop.

My work around back then was to get CD-RW Audio discs and then burn to regular CD-R in the computer. But sort of a long winded way considering what we have now.

I haven't recorded on mine yet, and just researched about the CD-Rs that will work in this machine. I've heard they have to be called Music CD-Rs and have the printed words "digital audio" on the right side of the disc. I just ordered a 10 pack of Sony disc's to try. They came to about $2 each. They are more pricey than regular CD-Rs. Hope they work!!
