I've had mine for about ten yrs. I had a back operation & in the recovery room I stopped breathing. My husband & son was called right away, (they were on their way to work hubby went berserk), but then I started breathing and my doctor diagnosed it as, "Sleep Apnea". It really takes a lot off my mind to have it, and a lot off of my hubby's mind so he doesn't wake up to a dead wife. (shutters)... Anyway, it also comes to a point that if I don't have it it's scary because I don't want to stop breathing either. I'm comfortable with my machine to say the least. One time we went on vacation and I forgot my cord at home. We were only gone 3 (three) days and the second night is the night I woke up from lack of air and I awoke sucking up a ton of air, which scared the hell out of me. Needless to say I never did that again. Be careful & double check your equipment all the time. I do have a few questions, but I don't know who to ask or how. Any suggestions???

Was really nervous getting a cpap machine for the second time...the first time I had one, I couldn't stand it and refused to give it a real chance. I've now had this cpap machine for about 1 1/2 months...and there hasn't been 1 single night I've not used it! I'm finally getting some real sleep after years of misserable sleep full of nightmares, frequent wakings needing to use the bathroom, and tons of tossing and turning. I HATED sleep before this...now I really look forward to it each night! What's really great...is that I'm finally really getting use to it. I don't even notice the mask and the air pumping into me anymore. At first it felt like a bit of a struggle to breath with it...but now it's almost completely normal. And I use to wake up in the mornings with my mask off...I never remembered taking it off in the night, but I was. That hasn't happened in a couple of weeks now. It's just great! It hasn't fixed all of my sleeping issues...but dang, it's been pretty amazing. I use to average 45+ disturbances per hour during my sleep...with my cpap machine, it's dropped down to a 30 day average of 1.9 :D. My sleep is deep now too. It's amazing and restorative. I never really got much deep sleep before...I was constantly tossing and turning and frequently waking up...or having nightmares and screaming out in my sleep./sigh...I sure don't miss that!! I love that I no longer fear sleep1 Sleep felt like an enemy to me before...and no matter how tired I was, I fought hard to stay awake. I felt like the moment I fell asleep I'd be plunged into violent nightmares...and I'd wake up frequently and feel miserable. I'd only get 2-3 hours of decent sleep per 3 or 4 days and I just couldn't function! I'm now getting 5 or 6 hours of solid sleep per night, and sometimes I'll take a nap during the day as needed. And I love my sleep! I don't plunge anymore...I float into sleep now! What a wonderful feeling that is! I understand that not everyone can do cpap machines...it's just too uncomfortable for them. And I don't look down on them...I had the same issue the first time I tried one years ago...but I do feel bad for them :(. They're really missing out. It's been less than 2 months for me...but it's already made a major positive impact on my life. I'm getting the best sleep of my life...and it's getting better as I'm getting more use to the machine! Sorry for the long post! xP

+twitchster77 Don't apologize for the 'long' post, as I'm about to become a new CPAP user--specifically with the Philips DreamStation Auto--so I'm looking to read about how others have adjsted to the machine, any problems, etc. But, I'm more looking for reassurance that it works! Frankly, after trying everything from wedge pillows (gravity) to silicone nose rings (to presumably keep nasal passages open), etc., I feel like I'm almost out of options, which is why I have to start using the DreamStation, because I feel like my life literally depends on it working for me. About a month ago I was diagnosed again (first time was diagnosed with mild sneep apnea 3 yrs ago, but found the CPAP options cumbersome and noisy), this time with severe sleep apnea, so I'm going to start by watching TV with the mask, so that hopefully my body gets used to it. I used to LOOOVE sleeping, so now that I've done a total 180 and struggle to sleep more than 2 hours at a time, I really feel like CPAP is my last chance...or I'm screwed!! Any advice or suggestions you may have would be MUCH appreciated, as I'm awaiting for my DreamStation to arrive. Thanks, Mike in Boston.

Check the seal mating the base station to the vertical face of the tank. Make sure its seated properly. Also check the seal in the top lid above the tank. It round lip around the outside may have folded over on itself or stuck together, run your finger under that lip to ensure its like a flap seal.

@twitchster776 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by automatic on? I can put my mask on, and breath a few times into the mask...and my dreamstation turns on automatically for me. Is that what you mean? I think it's an option that you have to turn on in the settings. I don't remember if it's in the basic settings, or the advance settings...you can get to the advance settings by holding in the round dial and the small ramp button on top for about 5 seconds.

@Thecpapshop3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you would be able to use the Dreamstation CPAP machine without the humidifier and still get the CPAP therapy. The humidifier is a comfort feature, and it is not necessary if you prefer not to use it.
@laurelinlorefield3188 жыл бұрын
I got one last August, one of the first few in my state. I've used a CPAP machine for more than 15 years, and my sleep has been poorest on this machine. I was sleeping great on my Remstar One until it stopped working. So, a new machine was necessary. My provider only carries the Dreamstation. When I used the auto-mode on humidity, it would wake me up with spikes of freezing air throughout the night. I added a heated hose, but that did not help. I turned that feature off. The humidifier runs low at six hours and dry at about 7 hours. I quit using the pre-heat. No improvement. I put a regular, non-heated hose on. It clicked loudly and rained condensation on me. I put a sleeve on the hose and those problems stopped. But if by chance I managed to get more than 7 hours, my throat was in bad shape from running with a dry humidifier. And the little white fill line is hard to see. The humidifier reservoir has much more surface air space available for evaporation than my old machine. I think this is a design flaw, giving me more moisture in a shorter period of time and running dry much sooner. Never had that problem before. The pressure on exhale was too high (does not back off enough) and the flex was less adaptable than my previous machine (RemStar one). I tried various settings, but I never managed a good night's sleep. My throat stayed sore and hoarse and my GERD got a lot worse. Sometimes, the flex pressure seems to actually cause apneas that wake me up. I lie there for a while and observe it happen. I stop the machine and start it again and that stops. (I have great fit on a full-face mask, so that is not the problem.) The phone app software does not report any additional data from what I can see on the machine itself and that is just for one night (no trends). At least that's how it works on my Adroid smart phone. Sleepyhead open source software is great for long term trends and deeper information, but the developer has not yet added data analysis on this machine. To top it off, the machines turns on a bright, white/blue light when it starts and when it stops. I can see everything in the room, and it's enough to wake up my partner. Anybody who knows anything about sleep knows a reddish light is much better. It slaps off my melatonin right when I need it most. My providers say I'm the only one reporting problems, but that's not what I see when I scan the forums. They can't give me anything else. So, I am back to shopping for one on my own. It's really unfortunate when a supposedly improved technology is actually two steps back.

What can I do when my reactions are totally opposite to the norm? I have a Philips Respironics (as demoed above) but my body reacts differently. The higher the humidity, the worse the dry mouth to the point where my tongue is glued to the roof of my mouth and my lips glued shut to be opened only by prying my lips apart with my fingers. I have taken the humidifier right off. I cannot use the full face mask because I take my dentures out at night and the fit is extremely poor and the nose mask isn't much better. The pressure is on 8 but I ramp it down to 4 and the dry mouth isn't quite as severe. My sleep is shallow the whole night until I take the mask off (about 6 am) and then I can get some sleep. After a few nights using the machine, because of the lack of sleep, I have constant headaches, nausea and everything else that goes with insomnia. In this state, I do not feel safe driving a vehicle but have been told by RoadSafety that if I do not use the machine, they will pull my driver's license. The only way I feel half way alive and normal is to stop using the machine for a couple of nights; then I do any shopping and driving around in a day or two then back on the machine. I have tried to talk to my dr who refers me to my specialist who refers me to the people he sent me to for the CPAP machine who refer me back to my dr. There are more issues with the machine but these are the main problems that are destroying my life.
@Thecpapshop4 жыл бұрын
Tnank you for reaching out. To prevent dry mouth you may want to try using a chin strap with your CPAP mask or the Somnifix adhesive mouth strips.
@phyllisstearn67614 жыл бұрын
@@Thecpapshop I am not a mouth-breather and never have been. And with my mouth being totally glued shut, how could I be breathing through it and get it to that state. I have actually used a chin strap several times but it has made no difference at all and have used Biotene which was no help at all. Over the years, I have found certain settings work best for me, no humidity, a constant flow and lower pressure. Now my machine is resetting itself and gone to a fluctuating flow. So when I press the 'ramp' button to have the flow at 4, over a short period of time, the pressure will be back up to 8. I have an appt with OxyLife to get the machine recalibrated and hopefully find out how I can reset it myself. I hope I can some resolution to my problem because, if I want to keep my driver's license, I must use the machine. My body seems to go in the opposite direction for some meds as well as the CPAP machine.

I am just starting to using this machine. I've had it for 5 years, but never really used it. I vaguely remember the instructions. One problem I'm having is that I wake up in the middle of the night feeling like the pressure is too forceful INTO my mouth mask .... almost like its suffocateing me. I feel like I have to push (breath) out against a high pressure then take a deep breath. Any advice?

Perhaps reach out to the company you received your machine from about the Flex setting which provides pressure relief. If you adjust that and are still not comfortable, please consult your treating physician about the pressure level.

is the algorith of philips match the autoset feature of the resmed ? confused about the performance.
@Thecpapshop5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Shailesh. Each machine is going to have its own algorithm, which is patented by the manufacturers . However, cpap machines from Philips Respironics or Resmed will provide the necessary therapy to keep your airway open and you should not notice much of a difference.
@ShaileshWagh1235 жыл бұрын
@@Thecpapshop but I felt resmed airsense a little better than philips , also why do both the models reduce pressure at the exhale ?( Like cflex) . I herd dreamstation has all aflex, cflex and auto n more modes . So the resmed airsense/airstart allow me to go to c flex type mode , reduce exhale pressure. Another thing is , i have mild osa and dry nose so I'll need a humidifier. My city temperature is warm ( 25 -40 degree Celsius) . Now airstart do not have heated tube and no autoset technology (I don't understand fully this autoset but it's kind of after each 3 breaths it adjust pressure if there is issue) . So is the airstart enough for me? I am ok with no auto ram / auto start etc . But what's difference between auto set and already and auto CPAP part. Seems that both the terms/technology are doing same thing, adjusting pressure at the event of blockage. Also do I need heated tube in that climate ?
@Thecpapshop5 жыл бұрын
The Flex for the Philips Respironics or EPR for the Resmed machines is a feature which slightly lowers the pressure so it s more comfortable when you exhale.
@Thecpapshop5 жыл бұрын
Both machines reduce the pressure during exhalation as a comfort feature to prevent you from breathing against a higher pressure. Furthermore, both the Philips Respironics machines come in a Fixed Pressure Model and Auto Pressure Model. C-Flex and A-Flex are the terms used by Phillips Respironics for the pressure relief upon exhalation feature. ResMed has this exact same feature, referred to as EPR [Expiratory Pressure Relief]. You can adjust the EPR settings of Resmed machines to lower the exhalation pressure. If you live in a dry climate, you may want to use a Nasal Spray along with the Humidifier. The heated tubing can be used to prevent moisture from building up in the tubing, also known as "Rain-Out". In the instance where rain-out is not being experienced, the heated tubing would not be needed. Both the Resmed AirSense10 and the Phillips Respironics Machines have the Auto Start feature and the option for a heated tube. There is a difference between an Auto Machine and the term Auto-Start. The term Auto-Start refers to the technology in which the machine turn on after you breathe into the mask a few times. If you have an Auto Machine, the machine is usually set at a pressure range between 4-20cm. The machine will provide with you the lowest pressure needed in order to keep your airway open. The pressure will rise when the machine senses additional pressure is needed. If you have an Auto Machine and are successfully getting a good night's rest, it is safe to say your machine is properly providing the amount of pressure needed in order to keep your airway open while you are sleeping
@ShaileshWagh1235 жыл бұрын
@@Thecpapshop i think i should have been more clear .. by airstart I meant the resmed airstart model which is more economical. Lacks few fetures than airsense 10 autoset like heated tube and autoset algorithm and autorem. I tried both airstart and airsense model seems to be working similar to airsense so I wanted to know what am I missing out . On the resmed comparison site it shows that airstart does not have the features which I enlisted above . I m concerned about missing out on autoset algorithm introduced for the airsense . As per my understanding, airstart is also auto CPAP and has APAP mode so it will increase pressure whenever blockages are detected . Autoset algorithm by the look of video on the resmed site seems to be working a step above and tracks each 3-4 breath and then finetunes the pressure. So I needed to know by how much (%,relative) does it improves the AHI or over-all performance .. my budget is suitable for airstart model as m paying out of pocket but just want to know what I m missing out with latest tech in airsense . Also, for dry moses how much the humidifier helps ? I m using prescription nasal drops for blockage and also SODIUM CLORIDE SALINE FOR KEEPING MOIST.

Why my therapy time does not match my sleeping time or my CPAP using time? For instance, I use the CPAP for 8 hours and it shows at the end 5 hours or 4.5 hours?
@Thecpapshop4 жыл бұрын
It is most likely generally due to the CPAP mask leaks. If the leaks are excessive, the therapy session will have gaps and present a shorter time span than the full time the mask was worn. However, please contact the manufacturer, as they may be able to provide a more concrete explanation.

Thalnks. Had it on the max due to dry mouth. Lowered it. note that the tubing is also heated. can lower that because I never get condensation. The real prob is dry mouth. The old F&P Icon had a problem with that capacitor (or whatever it is) that was located as a big bump in the middle of the power cord. Eventually F&P fixed that design flaw and sent my provider with a free replacement machine (without even asking, I guess they replaced everyone's) that still has the bump (a newly designed bump) and I've had no problems since. I'm now thinking of getting the new F&P Sleepstyle machine since my old Icon (the replacement one) is quite a few years old now. The new Sleepstyle does not have that bump thing on the cord.

Hello, Bill. The humidifier is intended to provide moisture but will not provide heated air. The setting to change the humidifier on your machine may be blocked by your provider. If it is not you can access this by going into my setup or my comfort, then selecting the option for humidification. In order to change the humidification setting, you would need to select fixed. Another thing you can do to make the therapy more comfortable would be to adjust the preheat option. Turn the Preheat option on about half an hour before you plan to go to sleep. This will heat the water up, so when you go to use the mask it is not blowing cold air.
