I'm the target audience. It's me. I'd like a projector but don't want to have one all the way across the room from the wall. Don't want to buy a screen. It'd be nice and easy to move between lounge and bedroom. I rent a flat up quite a few flights of stairs on my own. No need for a friend to help install a massive TV. Most of the content I watch is KZbin, Twitch or 1080p mp4s of films. I have decent monitors attached to my PC. So yeah, I'm the audience - I don't want the projector to be taking up space, 50cm from the wall or less is cool.

Mine just arrived a few days ago. I’m sure I’ll need to calibrate it but overall the portability is clearly outstanding. I purchased this for presentation purposes and group meetings that need some basic A/V. That’s pricy for just that purpose but the portability was enticing and so far I get compliments when using it this way. As for picture quality, when put up really close against the wall as designed and tested on a white screen, I’d say it’s pleasing… whites are bright white, and contrast is good. I think if one pulls the projector too far from the surface is when subjectively, picture quality, gradient, contrast will dip too much.

With a 200ms delay, I would worry about having major lip sync issues with this if you didn’t use the pathetic built-in speakers. And the MSRP is a dreamland number. Maybe if it offered 1000+ nits of brightness, and sub 40ms delay it could be worth £1100. But 1080p 60Hz… Ouch!

What other affordable and discreet options for UST projector? I've used the U4, super happy and UL5 is better... So I'm sure I'll be super super happy. My question is who is not the target audience? Lol Joke aside, I don't want a tv and when I watch something very often it is in evening.

Philips claims that the latency is very much reduced if you switch to game node. Did you try that?

I bought mine for work. Presenting content at 1080p and having mobility is ideal. It also has the added benefit it can be put in the garden for watching a movie on a chilled evening etc

Very helpful review. I have a couple of the previous indiegogo philips projectors (long throw) original bought for use in business meetings (where there never seemed to be a TV, or never long enough cable), until the pandemic kissed goodbye to that. Now they are used in my kid's bedroom and taken on holiday. And that's the thing - portability is more important to me than throw distance or colours. I also hate the operating system (which looks the same) and chime exactly with your point that "the clock is ticking" for this device. It feels to me as though it might be nice to have in my kid's bedroom but there is not enough feature uplift to justify the expense, especially since the resolution and brightness is not really any better. I was very tempted by this, but the valid points you have made have made me realise this is not worth the upgrade in my case. Also, on the PPX models, there are serious limitations on the audio. You can only bluetooth out audio that is coming from the HMDI, and to get audio from the apps, you need to use the headphone socket. (or is the other way round?) either way, there can be lipsync issues. Sadly your review didn't cover this so can't confirm if these issues are present on this device.

Great review. I got one off Indiegogo and will use it on our back deck (outside) for summer evening movies. Got a pair of stereo bluetooth speakers to connect to it. It was perfect for me, because our deck is relatively small (only 2m by 4m) so the short throw was essential. And the portability. And the built in apps. We have power, so really it's just the one power cable for the projector and the perfect backyard movie setup. I can understand what you're saying though... limited use cases that make sense for it.

I was tempted, to upgrade from my Picopix max, having the indiegogo page open for 2 weeks... but the resolution staying at 1080p certainly put me off. And if I am to enjoy 4k video, maybe I should just get a TV, or stick with what I have at 1080p.

I have a billiards room where I want to watch TV, but don't want to put any furniture to stage a TV, nor wall mount as it juts out. This will be cleanly mounted on the ceiling. I can also take it pool side and watch a soccer game once in a while. I have a Ust already with an Alr screen, that's more for home theater use. The use case for this is for flexibility and casual viewership.

I got this because it's the only small and "portable" Ultra Short Throw projector on the market. Keywords - small, portable and UST. (I have the Anker Cosmo laser capsule but it's not UST)In the future I would get them if they added 4K, built-in battery, laser tvs.

Are there any audio delay issues, or does it sync audio to it's own display latency? How about with a bt speaker? Has anyone attempted anything like an objective brightness measurement? I don't know if that's even possible, because it would have to do with reflectivity of the wall surface.
