John Anthony Walker Jnr. ran the largest and most damaging espionage ring in Cold War history. For nearly 18 years he and his co-conspirators sold US Navy secrets to the Soviets.
Yet things inevitably got too big and too messy. John Walker’s contempt for his wife and those around him meant that it was only a matter of time before his house of cards went tumbling down.
In the year of the spy, John Anthony Walker Jnr. was the spy of the decade.

Fun fact: when I was a child my baby sitter was his daughter, Cynthia. She's now married to a police officer and her son is a marine. They don't talk about her father and without knowing the back story you wouldn't ever guess her dad was one of the most destructive spy's in American history.

@j.2_w77 she lives in Norfolk, Virginia and her husband was a transit officer originally on the Tide light rail which was relatively new at the time. She and her husband enjoyed playing candy crush style games, at the time she was baby sitting us she purchased a new house to rent out and it was completely trashed and needed thousands in work before it was ready. She still lives in Norfolk and her husband has since become a Norfolk police officer. She has a strong dislike for the circus do to the treatment of the elephants specifically and would always point it out when we rode the tide while visiting her husband.

I served as a 3rd class Radarman in CIC (Combat Information Center) aboard the U.S.S. Niagara Falls (AFS-3) in and out of Vietnam from July, 1969 through August, 1972. John Walker was a Radioman and worked in the next room. A little over a year after he came aboard I was discharged and went home. He stayed aboard for a few more years. Walker far outranked me (E-4 vs E-7) & we never really associated. It wasn't until years later when his story came out (& it was only then) that I realized the codes we were using (they changed every night at midnight) were the very ones Walker was photographing while locked in the crypto room and then sending them to the enemy. I've often wondered how many names are on The Wall in Washington because of that prick. My only memory of John Walker is that he was an asshole. 😎

His military ID says Grade CW03 (chief warrant officer 3). 10+ years plus high security clearance would be near 100k annual salary in today’s money, maybe higher depending on years in the military and level of security clearance. Also in the military it’s not only how much you get paid but how much you don’t have to pay. Much easier to have more money when you’re not spending what you have on the basic things civilians pay for daily. Just want to put that out there to illustrate his level of greed.

"Level of greed" isn't a useful concept, at least in this sense. Greed is all about "more" - more than peers, more than everyone, more than you yesterday. In the Western world, virtually everyone's basic needs are met & then some - but often at the cost of mental health, relationships, and time. These costs, naturally, shape the attack vectors most available to the adverse powers. In this case greed to acquire tokens of wealth wasn't in itself the individual's goal, but rather a crutch they'd appreciated to alleviate their actual issues. I write this reflecting on the incredible fact that this simple notion has flown completely over the heads of just about everyone who ought to have known better.

I had Top Secret clearance and access to all sorts of nuclear weapon manuals and documents in the most well guarded and restricted areas in the world and could have easily taken documents if I really wanted to. But being an honorable and well not a criminal piece of shit I had no to want or motivate to do it.

That internal voice and sense of right and wrong is really all that any secure operation has to depend on when it comes to individuals with high levels of direct access. And Walker was about as amoral and self serving as they come, which I would imagine is nearly impossible to detect when coupled with high intelligence. He knew exactly how to play the game to his advantage. Robert Hanssen was weird and messed up, it was just a matter of time with him. Walker was greedy, cool headed and calculating, and very nearly got away with it. I wonder how many more are out there.

The narration is fascinating, the visual material, if not fully authentic, then historically and tastefully chosen at least. What else would you want if ya’re spy-stories’ addicted!??!! 😎👀😇 . Also I suggest to see movies like “Breach”, “Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy”, “Bridge of Spies”, “Pack of Lies” (my absolute favourite, actually!) - all based on true stories, and there are many more. I can't imagine how unbearable it is for individuals like these, that are unequivocally convinced that they are better than everyone else, whilst reality consistently proves the opposite. To anyone wondering, this is the most basic profile for traitors: the malcontent. This stems from an innate belief that the subject is somehow better and should have a higher status despite their lack of actual merit. And so they go seek it elsewhere.

The soviet psychologists identify young people - those who have unresolved personal issues within themselves often due to childhood trauma - the internal tension can be used by a skilled recruiter - a secret double life enables the person to channel this discontentment outwards towards a target. The text-book case for this was Kim Philby who was recruited by Arnold Deutsch; a university tutor.

Most of the cases I've read about show KGB/Soviets offering to match the target's base pay. Some refused any pay and some negotiated for higher. They paid in cash, obviously, and the intelligence services could get any banking information if someone was spending beyond their known means, so a lot of it evaporated in consumables of various kinds.

Just from reading the title , before in the first 10 seconds seeing that the topic was John Walker , et al , l had to Comment this : It is not possible to difinatively state a Single * Most Damaging * , because the two leading possibilities were both terrible , but largely in different contexts that can't be directly compared : . The Walker Family & Friends altered the Strategic balance of power , and indirectly extended the Cold War . A huge thing , but the bottom line results were indirect , and one of multiple other geopolitical factors . Robert Hansen directly and relatively imeadately caused the death and torture of a large number of specific identifiable people .

I wonder if there is at least one Soviet/Russian spy who worked for the West who could be described in such hard terms as John Walker? "Evil incarnate"...I love the stories you produce but I always get a feeling - I mean, its not a feeling but rather obvious fact - that somehow those who worked for the West were better human beings with virtually no or little pathological character flaws...Not as greedy, more moral, better fathers and husbands...etc...Maybe that is the way it is...Like I said, I like to see at least one episode on a Soviet/Russian spy for the US who was a complete moral vacuum, a sociopath and a greedy scumbag with no redeeming qualities.

The guy who helped ID the Russian spy, Rudolph Able (real name Willie Fisher) was an alcoholic who was pretty useless as Able's assistant. I suspect that some other defectors were also flakes. One Russian spy, Melita Norwood, refused money, thought she was doing what she did to help peace by creating nuclear parity, and was only caught in her 80s, and wasn't charged. She turned down a Russian pension. However not born a British national. Died in the UK and was awarded posthumous honors by the Russians. We have to remember with Norwood and some of the others that in the 1930s through 1945, Nazis were a bigger threat than the communists. And some business and political leaders in the US and US were appeasers. Different times.

@ you should Probably should listen to more interviews from soldiers (on each side). He gave classified information to NVA regarding US ship locations and manuevers off the Vietnam coast. Many men died because of this bastard.

🤣🤣🤣 r u a shill or blind in one eye? they ALL have been doing it for years. look at just the difference in net worth before & after taking office for POTUSes since Regan at least (Clinton is the biggest) ... singling one out one as special or partisanism isn't tenable when you look at them all. ❤️‍🩹 ✌🏻 ps they want us to choose sides and argue with each other about it. misdirection (distraction) is the first rule of illusionists. let's please not play their game & keep them _all_ accountable.

The key takeaway from the history of Soviet espionage and counter-espionage is that it never really mattered. Damaging? How? What is the world like now that it would not be if cases like these never happened? Soviet and US Intelligence were chucklefucks.
