being slightly generous, an average mlb team gets about 35 at bats per game. youre looking at about 5600 at bats per season for each team, multiply by 30 plus some post season and round it up to 160k. 95 years of that so youre looking at about 15 million in total, seasons used to be shorter etc etc... this number tracks

Technically the better play would have been 1-5-3. The runner on third was the bigger threat for a future run. The pitcher never even looked at third to see if the play was do-able. Still worked out for the triple play.

Willie Mays never needed a base coach. If Willie had been on first base in the bottom of the ninth inning with 2 outs, at Candlestick Park in game 7 of the World Series, instead of the batter who hit the double to right field, he would of scored to make the score 1-1. Whitey Lockman held Ally up. Giants lost 1-0. Modern Mlb players don’t know how to slide or run bases intelligently.

I am surprised that the pitcher, after catching the batted ball, didn't first look to third base. With no outs (one out after he caught the ball) I would think that he would want to eliminate the runner at third first, if possible. The pitcher didn't even look to third. They were only able to turn the triple play because the runner at third ,inexplicably, never made sure that the ball got down. If the runner at third hadn't committed to coming home, he was probably far enough off base to be put out after the pitcher made the catch. Then it would have been two outs with a runner on first. If the runner on third hadn't committed to going home and the pitcher goes to first for the second out, then the Tigers would still have had a runner at third with two outs.

Each position (1st base, 2nd base, pitcher, etc) is assigned a number for use during the statistics keeping. Which confusingly, is not the base they play. The pitcher is position 1, 1st base is position 3, 3rd base is position 5. So a 1-3-5 triple play means the pitcher caught the ball to get an out, then 1st base received the ball to get an out, then 3rd base.

If the ball is caught in the air before hitting anything else, the runners have to return to the base they started the pitch at before they can then advance to the next base. The guy running from 3rd to Home never tagged back to 3rd. So when the 3rd baseman touched the base while having the ball, the runner is then out.

If a ball is caught out of the air, all runners must go back to the base they were on before the ball was hit. If a player on the pitching team who has the ball can touch the base before the runner gets back, the runner is out.

@@MrH.09it’s impossible to have a force out when the batter- runner is out before he gets to first base. The caught fly ball erased any possibility of a force out.
