Thank you Sir, you have beaten my photo teachers. But I think you did make a tiny mistake at 5:55. The COLD SHOE has not any pin. When we were young we put a flashbulb in the reflector. The unit had no contacts in the shoe; it was a COLD SHOE. At the flash unit was a cable, connected to a socket in the camera body. That was the PC socket ( Prontor Compur - Germany) Then came the amateur electronic flash with its six nches cable connection) and the ever lasting cable problems. The modern flash units had two connection sytems. First with PC cable and second with ONE PIN in the shoe. Ignition pulse from the camera body was sent to the strobe either by cable or by the ONE PIN in the shoe. This one pin shoe was the first HOT SHOE. The shoes are getting much hotter today.

@DarcyPerkins8 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you're now aware, but both shoes you refer to are hot shoes. A cold shoe is actually a shoe with no electrical contact (ie just to hold an object in a position, such as a microphone, or a flash using a sync cable). The automatic exposure you refer to is actually the TTL system, so what you're really distinguishing between is a TTL hot shoe, versus a dumb/basic/manual hot shoe.

Which do you recommend? I am not very experienced using flash so needs to be easy + quick to master. Thanks
@davidfarmer20497 жыл бұрын
interesting so can you run slave off the camera's own flash gun? (D300s here). Also , if you buy a dedicated flash (as you discuss are you safe from the excess voltage though the hot shoe? Excellent tut btw. Thanks for sharing.

In the *real* old days there was flash powder to contend with but they don't make 'em like the used to, thank goodness! I would have mentioned that ETTL and TTL mean "Electronic Through The Lens" and "Through The Lens", a complete beginner might find that confusing, but you're dealing with a retired lecturer. You failed to mention that many modern DSLRs have wireless flash controls built in. For example my Nikon D800 has such a system, called the "commander", which relies on the pop-up flash which can also be told to either fire or not, allowing full control of the light, and I can use this to control multiple off-camera units. I believe Canon has a similar system. I know this may seem a bit advanced for a first lesson *but* what if someone sees this and decides to invest in a wireless or wired control system they don't need? I'm really looking forward to this series as I hope to gain a better understanding of using flash. I understand the technical bits, using slaves, etc, but I really need a good grounding in using flash in everyday situations, when it's useful and when it's not.
@PhillipMcCordall10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I was indeed trying to keep it simple, with all my lessons I try and teach to my level of intelligence . I'm dyslexic so I think it probably helps.I certainly don't teach like a lecturer, as I wouldn't understand myself :)) As you say I've missed a lot out on purpose for those reasons, lesson 2 will be about what flash to buy depending on your needs, it will be finished in a couple of days, then TTL and ETTL will be explained together with flashes that will work on all makes, plus other types of flash and master flash etc. I'll leave flash powder out though but on the other hand ....... Phill
@Mirai452010 жыл бұрын
Man, before watching flash videos, it wouldn't hurt to start with "respect and politeness" ones. So you think you know two acronyms and you're better than a "retired lecturer"? This was really aggressive and unasked for. Actually, a "retired lecturer" is just an impolite way to say a person with a much wider knowledge than you'll ever get. And his answer was really humble I'd die from shame if I was you, it just saddens me to see this. He said at the beginning of the video that this is just an introduction. And are you really so worried that someone stupidly goes buying something because of an introduction video where he didn't recommend any product? The only thing he talked about was old "slave" flashes, which changes nothing about what you're talking about (which is the "Master mode" by the way, not "Commander", which is a system to control flash groups ... Maybe that's the difference between kids knowing two words and "retired lecturers" who know what they're talking about?) Cordially

Instead of changing the aperture to make the photo darker can i change the shutter instead? u had it at 1/125 right? Could we do 1/300 or whatever leaving the f-stop at the 5.6?
@PhillipMcCordall8 жыл бұрын
Hi Dori, you are limited to a maximum shutter speed around 250th with flash. Unless you have high speed capability. So in normal situations it will make no difference, why not just lower the power of the flash. ?
@DoriMAffiliate8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response. Okay, so I personally am not super knowledgeable about flash. All i know is I learned this fill flash (built into camera) technique from your video also use external flash at night. I like to always keep my f-stop low because i want the buttery background look. Okay can u explain if u're talking about built in flash or an external flash?
@PhillipMcCordall8 жыл бұрын
External flash , a flash fires in synchronisation with the shutter, so the shutter must be open for the duration of the flash, this happens at a maximum of 250 or 200th depending on the camera. Now that doesn't change the exposure, it depends on the power and distance of the flash to the subject. Your only way is lower the iso or close the aperture. Your problem may well be the ISO setting, put it as low as you can and try that, with the flash further away. :)

If the flash has a slave yes, the master probably won't work in all cases but if your flash doesn't have a slave you can buy slave sensors that are cheap and will fit most flashes.
