How can you say Feds and Zorkis are fake Leica, when they are not marked as Leica!?

You helped. Many youtubes on the various models. Many people have broken Exactas. It seems to trend from the long exposure knob. With my limited knowledge with a very recently acquired VXIIa with a custom viewfinder, when my crank won't crank, I open the body, and rotate the cassette drive and the gear drive next to it to the left a lot. Not just the cassette drive wheel, but both the cassette and the gears that get pulled when film is loaded into the cassette. Then i can move a stuck arm to pull cock position. However, it only likes being in B or 1/25th. That's fine. It's a display camera, and a beat looking Biotar is coming in the mail and I'm primed with everything under the sun to polish the aluminum it's made off. I mean everything. Whatever keeps me off the streets and out of the cafe's eating scones and coffee...and yes, with these items for polishing I'll be wearing a dust mask.

As a kid, I knowingly bought a couple of Canon rangefinder bodies at Toronto pawnshops and equipped them with a variety of German lenses. My favourite lens was a Leica Summicron F2 (collapsable brass) .. sharp as a tack!

I bought a Leica IIIa but it has the same edge as the black Leica viewfinders. Its shutter button is also taller and has a neck. I don’t know if it’s a real or Frankenstein’s Leica 3a

Hi Phillip, thanks for the video. I'm currently trying to photograph shiny metal furniture studs. Have you got any recommendations please? I think the shape of them is causing all the issues because they're domed. regards Chris
@PhillipMcCordall8 ай бұрын
Hi Chris, glad you enjoyed it. There is nothing worse than a domed or curved piece of metal, that needs to look like silver, is it just one stud or a shot of a chair with many studs ?

@@PhillipMcCordall Hi Phillip, Thanks for getting back to me. It's a row of three, on the corner of a footstool. Regards Chris
@PhillipMcCordall8 ай бұрын
@@ng3man1 I really don't know how to help, I presume the problem is caused by the studs are deep into the leather meaning you can't reflect dark or light into them, maybe covering the studs in black velvet then double expose the studs with a different lighting. Another way I have solved problems like this is with a small torch and light them one at a time with no other lights on.
@ng3man18 ай бұрын
@@PhillipMcCordall Thanks, I will give that a try and I'm sure with a bit of perseverance I'll get there in the end. All the best

You could always try setting a small mirror shining on each stud.

Thanks for such a positive video. I'm getting what appears to be your lens's doppelganger. Looking forward to taking it hiking with me as a lightweight telescope. There are lots of t2-to-1.25 adapters out there for exactly that purpose. It'd be sort of a more-compact Celestron C90, which is also pretty good for hiking, though on the large side of possible. We'll see how well collimated it is and/or how easy it is to align. As for the TC, I'll probably stick to a telescope Barlow or a nice Sigma APO.

what a lot of waffle the sinnar F was the field camera for external use and the P was the pro camera for studio use the 'C' was for composite
@PhillipMcCordall11 ай бұрын
totally disagree with you and find your remark both offensive and rude. The P was much more accurate for focus , pros who could afford the P used them for everything, if you couldn't afford a P you bought an F. I have been concerned with Sinars from 1964 using the Norma at first . I retired with 2ps and two Fs that I often used for quadruple exposures on 10x8 moving the film from one to the other for very complicated advertising images.

Hi Phillip, great video on the sinar p for macro. Just one question, I’m looking to mount a dslr or mirrorless camera to my own Sinar. Did you make the adapter board yourself or did you purchase it from somewhere, many thanks, Chris

Many thanks, not having done this before, would you recommend the use of a recessed lens board as a starting point?
@steveborghardt Жыл бұрын
Wow - thanks so much for this - I was looking through Ebay and it looks like every Leica 2 in the $800 to $1,000 price range is fake - I'm so glad I've found your video. Thanks again.

I have shot three different mirror teles, two 500mm and one 800mm. I've also shot fancy refractor 500, 600 and 800 lenses. The reflector lenses uniformly lack contrast and suffer considerable chromatic aberration. They also lack diaphragms. So, I would never recommend them for serious photography. Furthermore, without auto-focus, they are useless for birding or commercial sports photography. However, there is no denying their affordability, their compactness and portability. They are certainly fun to use and (due to their low cost) would be a good match for a middle-schooler going to the zoo or maybe shooting a baseball game from the nosebleed seats. In fact, they do a decent job for railfans shooting distant locomotives and for folks with beachfront property who like to take snapshots of ships crossing the horizon. There are many non-critical applications for reflector lenses where super-expensive telephoto lenses would be overkill. However, if you're investing thousands of dollars on a safari, then I urge you to rent a serious refractory telephoto lens, not one of these reflectors.

I don't know why everybody says that exposure needs to be manual. My Nikon D7000, from about a decade ago, allows me to assign a 'non-cpu lens'. In my case it's 500mm & f6.3, now I use aperture priority to adjust shutter speed & ISO. The focus is still manual and very picky, but exposure is not a problem. Check your user manual!

Great video and review of the Exakta , quick question I am finding it difficult to locate someone who can service Exakta shutter blinds as most of them I have come across have pinholes
@sclogse1Ай бұрын
I have a suggestion with no experience. If you were to patch those holes, perhaps the material used to cover typewriter cases could be used. It's strong with a fiber construction. Otherwise, i suppose black dust tape glued over the holes is pretty similar.

Fascinating video! I have an interesting "Leica clone" with Fed-1 DNA but it doesn't try to pass as a Leica! No, that would be too straight forward and perhaps overly obvious! No, it instead poses as a famous Japanese Leica clone! It tries to pass as a Leotax with the Showa Optical Works Ltd. nomenclature and such! The lens is a collapsible 5cm f/3.5 marked Lantana Anastigmat with metal Leotax cap. But it has the Fed-1 four slotted screws on its front and the three around the tripod socket on the bottom and of course a lever in the lens cavity instead of the Leica roller! It works well (after a fashion) and is interesting as a "clone of a clone" but it's NOT a Leica OR a Leotax!

You can use auto ISO in M mode with these lenses. These lenses will work better on mirrorless IMO. One of my motives for getting the Z6ii was the IBIS would provide image stabilization so I could get a couple extra stops below 1/500 if needed. Focus peaking would pinpoint the focus as I turned the huge focus ring. I am using the Nikkor 500mm f/8 which I think is a better lens than the cheaper Chinese knock offs.
