I used to take my guitars to a tech because I didn’t know how to do a lot of the things I wanted done and I didn’t trust myself to modify my guitars correctly. I finally stepped up and learned how to tech my own guitars, bought a bunch of tools and miscellaneous guitar parts over several years. There are still some things I haven’t done and probably won’t attempt to do. Like refrets, broken headstocks. Finish work or paint unless it’s mine and not super fancy or professionally done at the factory or custom shop or whatever. Anything else that would be technically beyond my skill level I won’t do. I’m comfortable with where I’m at now. Most of my guitars have the mods and features I want and I don’t have the crazy ideas I used to have because I read about something in a guitar mag. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars chasing things that never worked the way I invisioned. It’s so cringy to think back on those days and how much of a buffoon I was. Probably still am. Talk about learning the hard way. I always seem to make things as hard as I possibly can for myself. Ok enough, sorry. Bye…

That was not the acoustic guitar humidity discussion I expected! In Minnesota, I've got guitars that have done well in this climate without special care but when I buy something from other parts of the country, that's when the trouble begins. This year, I'm keeping everything in a hard case with a homemade sponge & soap box humidifier. For guitars known to have issues, I'm using Daddario Maintain packs in the case. Not sure what'll happen but it should be better than last season.

I use simple baby oil as a fret board conditioner. The primary ingredient is mineral oil of course and a small travel-sized bottle is less than $3 in my area. Works great!

I also use baby oil. Works perfect: cheap, no nasty smell and does not deteriorate over time. Lately I emptied the left over from my son, he‘s 28 now. But it HAS to be mineral oil. I noticed some are made with natural oils. So it‘s important to read the ingredients before buying!😊

Another consideration for the amazon/budget guitar sales not showing in used is they are typically bought by those who see them as a major purchase no matter where they are in age. It's a disposable income thing and also some are buying them as a 1st guitar and then maybe not learning or playing much but they have the thought that one day they will go back.

I'm in Southern Ontario Canada so basically North Eastern U.S climate wise. My electric guitars hang on the wall in my finished basement(poured concrete foundation). I started controlling the humidity in the basement about 2 years ago and the difference in tuning stability has been dramatic. In the summer, even with central air conditioning, I would have humidity level get near 70% or more, where as in the winter with a forced air natural gas furnace, it would drop to below 20%! Now i run a small dehumidifier in the summer, and a cool mist humidifier in the winter to keep the humidity level between a consistent 45-60%. Made a huge difference for me with my guitars as I have to tune them far less due to dramatic humidity swings.

Nice work once again, Phil! I agree about "throwing money" @ a NEW "bargain git"... SO inadvisable vs. just purchasing the factory's "upgraded" model. I feel exactly the OPPOSITE about embarking on a "Resto-Mod" involving a lower-priced (non-collector...yet) "vintage git". If one "Knows Their Gear" AND a good Luthier/Builder, the end result should be far MORE satisfying than a typical commissioned "Custom Shop Build"...and far LESS expensive!

I have some premium guitar amps. But, one of my favorites remains my Blackstar HT-5R combo as a bedroom amp (MkI). It came with a 12" speaker, which I paid about $425.00 new in box from GC when the MkII version was about to be released. It came with the channel pedal, and headphone jack uses preamp power. It is compact, and the distortion sounds good for the price. It serves its purpose well!

The Silver Sky is a Strat, so young people don’t mind crossing over to PRS SE models, but older people aren’t as likely to do that. So younger people may still be buying more Strats than Teles, it’s just not always a Fender Strat. That’s ridiculously obvious.

Just bought my Christmas present from me, to me. 😊 Got myself a Princeton Reverb Tonemaster. I have a vintage Princeton in my studio which I dearly love but in my office with its carpeting, drapes, highly flammable wood and cloth furniture, it seemed a bad idea to place a high voltage tube amp there. The Tonemaster is worth every penny folks. It sounds the business. There is the question of whether it's repairable long-term but I refuse to worry about that now. I'm just having a great time rocking my Tele.

O got an USA last year and is fantastic but couldn’t justify 2 strat style guitars and in particular both at high price. Got later a silver sky se and thought it was great but again was good with one strat and the sold it. And now neede to reduce guitars and got one of the maple ones and yeah. The silver sky se is such a fantastic guitar. The core is better for sure , more perfect more premium, but the se is already so good and for the price difference, is just a no brainer I think. In contrast I don’t like much the player series. Is just feels ok to me but doesn’t excites that much and feel the need to upgrade. Don’t feel that with none of the SE guitars I’ve had , and I’ve had the core counterpart of 2 of the SE’s I’ve had and really. Core is work of art, great, but the SE I’m very happy and satisfied and don’t have the urge to upgrade or lack of excitement when I play them. The other is the DGT SE. which Is just a fantastic guitar. Amazing PRS. Lasts year I liked them but now I’m really a prs fanboy hehe.

I own a couple older Cort guitars and they are pretty good. I have to say about 90% of my collection of guitars were preowned. I get the best deals that way. I am a little fussy about condition I want my guitars to be pretty much at least an 8 out of 10 in condition. I have been very lucky with Guitar Center. Usually I won't buy preowned online but GC has been really good at the condition listed. I have bought many that they say are in good condition that IMO are in like new condition. I have bought several guitars that the guitar was worth what I paid if it was all original but had upgraded pups that were worth more than the guitar they were in. I also like to buy guitars that need work a cracked neck broken headstock are ones I love to find and fix.

My first guitar was a Cort flat top LP-shape that I was too stupid to appreciate. Yeah it was a beginner instrument but it felt and played among the most comfortable instruments I've ever owned. One of my big guitar regrets is letting that instrument go in a trade that got me something "better" (read as: more expensive but worse) from a cooler brand. I hate how dumb I was.

Some things ya can get cheaper elsewhere that are just fine, generally that something ya can get the same brand of somewhere else. As far as things like files and useful luthier tools it’s worth spending the extra money.

The metal baseplate on a tele bridge pickup, a P90 and a humbucker is an essential feature. That's one of the major differences from a Strat Single Coils. DiMarzio have special humbuckers where the metal base plate doesn't have physical contact with the magnets. They are called Airbuckers and people usually put then in the neck. It's like the humbucker sounding versions of tele pickups where you have no baseplate on the neck pickup and then you have a baseplate on the bridge pickup.

I have 4 Cort branded guitars, great quality for what you pay, it's a shame they discontinued two of their best designs some years ago the M and Zenox series ... I don't know if that was part of the deal they have now with PRS as those model lines shared some design points with them and could be seen as competition. Anyway for me the best sleeper low priced used guitar is the M600/M700, IMHO they're better quality than the PRS SEs and are much cheaper in the used market.

Upgrading an inexpensive guitar can give you more satisaction than buying a $6oo + guitar, but... If you want to sell it, you are screwed. Same with cars. I've watched the Mecham auto auctions and I have seen resto-mods with over $100K sunk into them sell for measly $40K. Conversely, a fully restored classic will make a profit.

Not only are younger players buying fewer Strats, many that might buy a Strat are buying a Silver Sky or a Fiore. Fender choosing not to bend-over backwards to make Mayer happy gave the #3 a chance to steal a serious chunk of their market that all the other clones weren’t. But I’m hoping these trends mean we get more Squier Jaguar options for this old guy who just wants an inexpensive Jaguar and wants more options than they currently offer.

It took me a good long time to see one in my local shop, RSS02T w/ P90s. I didn't even play it in the shop. Sales guy at Kevins in JAX walked around a rack with it in his hand and I just looked at it and told him " that one is mine" and bought it. Best electric in the herd. Few months latter bought the 'bucker version too. Both get more play than all my other electrics. So good I played it for 3 months before I tweaked the setup. Near perfect out of the gig bag. Almost a year now and it is still my #1, above a G6128T Gretsch and Gibson ES335 Dot. My #3 is a Backlund Rockerbox heavily moded with custom P90s instead of 'buckers and a master volume with treble bleed. No need to mod the Revstars at all so far.

Trademark is a very complicated, and confusing, legal construct. It is international in scope, and is very unforgiving of mistakes. It is expensive to apply for in the first place, requires a great deal of research ( both Federal *and* every state register ) and the attorneys who handle it are specialists who are *very* well paid. ( On the other hand, for a business, it's all a write-off. )

If that happens, it's probably not going to be the best for the consumer.

I would think most players who want a Tele like that it’s a ‘working man’s’ guitar. Buying a blinged out AM pro 2 Telecaster is perhaps overkill, whereas people are more likely to buy a Strat with all the knobs on. I would also guess very few cheap guitar brands sell 2nd hand. Why buy a 2nd hand Harley Benton for 150 when you can get a new one for 180?

Sweetwater, etc.... On one list, forgot which one, believe it or not even Harley Benton got a nod ! WOW ! Also never knew Cort's factory makes all those other brands you mentioned...Fender, PRS, etc... I also think the same factory that churns out Harley Benton guitars for Thomann also churns them out for a bunch of other Asian companies. Been very disappointed with Music Nomad's fret beveler...didn't do as good a job on all my sharp frets on all my electrics. Must be the season on the east coast... a painful pain !

How does it even come close to making sense to own a color?? And also, the public already calls the Dimarzio PAF as a word and the original Gibson PAF as the letters, Dimarzio is insecure for trademarking a name they didn't even come up with.

Offsets and Teles selling so much could also people buying guitar number 3 or 4 and they don't want to pay the big bucks for something they aren't sure about. I know I bought my Am Pro Strat before getting a nice Tele and Offset

Some StewMac stuff seems overpriced but some things seem underpriced if you're very familiar with their catalog. Wait for sales.

Really hard to make any inferences with only number rankings and not actual numbers sold. The difference between Player Strat and Player Tele could be 1 unit or 100,000. Same with the higher priced ones. You’re making too many inferences with rankings within a few places of each other.

On the one hand gibson being sued is ironic and hilarious, at the same time calling PAF and double cream is as stupid as having a patented on guitar shape

I'm always gonna associate Cort with the really cheap guitars you used to see everywhere back in the day....I almost think Cor-tek would be a better name on the headstock.

If you want to mod inexpensive guitars, don't buy new. Instead, buy used at steep discounts, maybe with "damage" like "it won't stay in tune". Also, there are a lot of cheapos available right now from people who bought one in the past few years, gave up playing and tossed the guitar in a closet.

Cort Guitars are extreme hit and miss in my honest opinion, played a lot of beauts and duds as well. The electrics generally are of a better quality than their acoustics.

To sell your used Harley Benton or Eart on Reverb, you'd be admitting that you bought it in the first place. Who wants to do that?
