I just pre-ordered the new Squire Contemporary RH from Sweetwater. I decided to give the Plek a go after watching your videos. When I spoke to my Sweetwater rep Tyler he ask me all the questions that you had suggested in this video, so nice to see they are listening. I also specified that I wanted a 1.5mm action height off the 12th fret. He put my answers to the questions and expectations in the notes on my invoice to relay to the techs. Now I just have to wait for the guitar to arrive. I already started ordering upgrades. I ordered a Lindy Fralin Split Blade for the bridge and a Twangmaster for the neck. It's getting Graph Tech Ratio locking tuners and CTS pots, Switchcraft jack & switch as well. Probably have like $1,150 in it after It's all said and done, but it will be sweet Tele.

I finally got some time to watch this video. I bought a PRS and had a new nut, locking tuners. I was willing to spend the extra $ for the Plek. I literally have to slow down. Effort less. The guitar that was purchased before, was from another store. The guitar wasn't pleked. The guitar was out of the factory box, loose packing was to blame. The action was unplayable. Boxed it back up, for return. I believe that if you don't want to do the work. Definitely have it Pleked. Well worth it.

I had a new China Epiphone Riviera Plek'd and bone nut installed. The Plek machine cuts the nut, so it's as good as it's gonna get. My Les Paul was a fight to play, had it Plek'd and it totally transformed it into butter, such a pleasure to play now. I'm not saying a good luthier/tech can't do as good as job, but the machine never has a bad day.

I've been finding the Affinity range really good for the price, but almost always needing a good setup, once done they are a great base for a project or as a beginner guitar. I have a Tele and a Starcaster at the moment, both have had the electronics swapped out, the Tele for cheep AlNiCo 5 Pickups with CTS pots and a Switchcraft switch, the Starcaster with Martin A Smith wide range Pickups and CTS/Switchcraft. Both guitars have come up a treat, I still need to do a little work on the Starcaster, the skunkstripe is a little proud and I still need to level the frets. Long story short, the Affinity series of guitars are quality guitars, you just need to give them a little love when you get them to have the playing like a guitar worth a lot more and with a few additions, they can become an extremely good guitar

Found a Squire in GC that had the most amazing neck. You could tell some real time had been spent on it. So I bought for $68. Brought it home, stripped everything off of except the neck and body. Put all Fender Custom shop everything back on. Now I have a $680 Squire the plays and sounds like a guitar costing 3x as much.

I’ve had almost all my guitars plek’d and I highly recommend it! Especially if your buying a guitar from Indonesia or or South Korea. I even had my rgr5227 plekd and man! The strings just lay on the frets with no buzz. I do my own set ups on my guitars, after getting the plek job, knowing the frets are on point I can get the action and relief exactly how I want it. I’ve had Sweetwater do other repairs to my guitars and was totally happy how everything came out. I just make sure I keep in contact with them on every step so I know how it’s coming along.

I agree with your suggestion. I had my Charvel Pro Mod pleked when I got it from Sweetwater, and it plays beautifully out of the shipping box. They did a phenomenal job! However, I told my sales engineer how low the action was that I wanted, and he did follow up with the same questions you asked. But in the ordering process, there was no standard form. I also would have liked to get a plek printout to see the before and after results

Sweetwater is the one music supplier I have good things to say about. Dave Simpson did some videos on the entry level Squire he got and made it sound great in his hands. I'd love to experiment with having Sweetwater plek a guitar for me. As for the nut, its worth the fifty bucks to have a good hand cut bone one installed. I paid for a pro setup on the last guitar I bought (PRS SE), mostly because I didn't want to deal with it (changing string gauge, resetting the trem, action, intonation etc...) this time after having set up my guitars for the past 30 years. The money spent was well worth it, at least to me.

I had a PRS se plek'd from sweet water and while the frets are level they are not crowned very well. In fact the tops are flat but rounded on the edges. I had it set it up also but the action was too high. I tried lowering the action and found out why it was set high. The flat frets buzz around 14th fret. Looking at the frets 14-20 they took off a lot of material. I am going to re-crown them myself but I'm not sure how much of an improvement I will see. I did my own fret level and crowning on a Squire and it came out great. Learn to do it yourself.

Also, I should note I'm 55 years old. That being said, I have the drive, determination and discipline to continue. I'm a surgeon at Vanderbilt University. And I need some sort of hobby that takes the stresses off per se. I've always wanted to learn how to play and be competent at it. However, never had the time to really put into learning...due to my medical endeavors. Also, I have a Squire Infinity Telecaster.....Should I get my guitar Pleked? Or professionally set-up? Will I notice the difference of a good "set-up" at this stage of my abilities? Want to thank you or anyone who answers my questions, in advance. It means a lot to me. I do have to admit, guitars, gear, etc. is quite addicting. But in a good way, if that makes any sense.

@@ricks.1092 I live in St. Louis, and been playing for almost two decades fwiw. I believe a good tech can polish frets nicely, and they will feel great. That being said, there is no plek service here, but I have driven 4 hours to have the service done to all of my instruments after purchasing a USA G&L that was plek’d at the factory. In my opinion, the frets are as near to perfect as they could be, but I believe the real difference is in the intonation improvement that comes from the plek machine perfectly polishing the frets and instructing the operator to adjust the neck. To have your guitar be as close to as perfectly in tune as possible is where the micro adjustments of the plek machine really is why the service is mandatory for me. Chords high up the neck that always used to sound just a little out of tune, sound much more pleasing after a guitar has been plek’d. There really is no comparison between the best tech in St. Louis and the plek machine. Plek wins hands down.

@@ricks.1092 It's an entirely personal choice. If you feel it can be improved, or it's buzzing, or it's hurting your fingers etc. The ultimate aim is to look at the guitar and immediately want to pick it up and play it. If I were you I would wait 4 more months once your fingers have adjusted and got more comfortable. TBH the Squier should be very playable out the box, so I wouldn't spend a lot of money just yet... I had my favorite Ibanez re-fretted by a HIGHLY-RATED Nashville shop with stainless steel frets and a plek job. My baby came back with the last two frets un-plekk'd because they didn't enter the number of frets correctly into the machine (according to them). So my 24 fret guitar got a 22 fret plekk'ing. The guitar fretted out at the 22nd fret. WTF?! Also. On top of that, the frets were not properly polished and were very scratchy and rough feeling under the strings. I also noticed inconsistencies in the crowning and gouges in the fretboard. All of this from a HIGHLY recommended guitar shop from guitar city USA. I do my own leveling, crowning and polishing these days lol

I always buy cheap basses, (and occasionally guitars) and I always have them pleked. When I was a teenager in the late 80’s and early 90’s I only played Gibson’s, always expensive stuff. Nowadays Fender & Gibson are not worth anything near what they charge, so I buy Squier & SX, and have them pleked and setup how I like them. I usually replace the bridges too. I have one 2005 MIM Jazz bass that I bought new. It's been okay, even held up being shipped to Germany and toured all over the country, but I still prefer my cheap basses. IMO, it’s better to buy cheap instruments, then get them setup how you like it. No one will tell the difference, even in the studio.

thanks Phil for the video thought it was very interesting great idea I want to add my experience I bought a firebird five or they called it the tea instead of the studio which is the cheaper one in 2017 the end of 2017 I'd like to say about November when the 2018s came out I got an amazing deal I thought this guitar was plucked at the factory and I understand that Gibson isn't doing that anymore on any of their guitars they were doing that for their more expensive guitars it's weird I didn't pay any taxes in 2017 but now if you buy from Sweetwater I happen to live in New York you will have taxes added on to it the guitar played great can't complain had it set up you know quite a few times over the years and I noticed that the low e string and a little bit of the a string will not sitting in the pocket of the of the nut they were kind of sitting on top I asked the tech about it and he said I had noticed that the low e and the a especially the low e not so much the a were not sitting in the pocket of the slot for the string sitting on top you know half half in the pocket half on top I asked the tech if I needed to have the nut recall and he said no it sets up fine and plays fine which it does although think I'm going to have that possibly addressed on my next setup the text says it's not a problem it does play fine the action is great but I think I'm going to have that addressed at my next setup or at least I have to check again and see if I get the same answer yeah but as far as the way the frets felt the frets are also cryogenically treated I don't know if they're doing that anymore either I was wondering whether or not that was ayes the nut I mean I'm sorry the fret wire was cryogenically treated I don't know if they're doing that either that was also something offered on the more expensive guitars I think they did away with that also I thought that might have been sort of a to be honest bullshit but I looked into and researched cryogenic treatment of metals and it's not it's used in many industries including the aviation industry which says a lot and it does increase the hardness by 400% which I thought also might have been bullshit but it's not therefore giving you know four times the life the way life on the frets so this was a true thing anyway thought I'd comment on this excuse the grammatical and spelling and all that kind of stuff using speech to text and it sucks well it doesn't suck because I'm blind and it allows me at least to interact verbally and have it come out as text doesn't do a great job of course as you can see most likely but usually my thoughts are made understandable or made to be understandable which is good enough for government work right everyone stays safe sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist

A lot has been said about setup & tuning on these channels.⚓️ I’m a 65 y/o beginner: taking a bunch of considerations - $$$, keeping good instruments in circulation, whether an experienced person was playing.... two years ago I bought a 2009 Indo Squier Affinity for $100.00 & immediately had a Plek setup for $185.00. Why would I do that? It turned a $100 guitar into a $500 + guitar. To my innocent hands it feels great. And I won’t have to do anything to the guitar for awhile⚓️ After thought... keeping marginal instruments from the landfill is good motivation. If $200 keeps an instrument alive.... maybe it’s a good investment 😎

I like my MIM Deluxe Nashville but it's absolutely no comparison to my 1980 4 digit Hamer Standard that I bought new in 1980. I never owned a Gibson and I'm 62. I just thought they cost to much. I have played them before and used a friends a few times for a month or so and I just don't see the wow compared to the dollar signs. I'm considering buying a les paul copy right now and I'm really liking the Wolf Guitars. Unfortunately nobody around here has one that I can actually hold and play.

I think people get hooked on “USA” or “Custom Shop.” Eddie built his guitar and lord Brian May actually made his! The neck was an old fireplace and the binding was a plastic self. Neither were custom shops from specialized luthiers or exotic woods. It’s a mental mindset. Just as Infinity is Nissan, Acura is Honda and Lexus is Toyota. The cars mimic each other minus different molding and trim.

Even if you don’t want to get into buying specialized tools like radiused sanding beams, at least learn how to set up your guitars and basses. There’s no voodoo in there, it all works off of logic, not magic.

Not to mention that if you figure out how to do it, you’ll save a few guitars worth of coin by setting things up yourself. At this stage I bring major stuff (refrets, entire retiring jobs, etc) to local pros, while action, truss rod adjustment, etc I can do at home. Plus, when you get the process nailed, you get your preference right off the bat. Phil had the video with the Fender Custom Shop guy who discussed the TRAIN acronym - helped my setup process immensely.

I personally prefer my classic vibe squires to my mexican strats and teles. I want to have them plek'd when I can afford it. After the upgraded tuners, pickups, and pots/wiring, even after being plek'd they will cost me less than a mexican and I'll have the satisfaction of knowing that they're completely setup for my exact needs. Squires can be awesome!!!

I don't really hear a difference in between the squire and your custom shop stratocaster because I have a fender squire indonesia stratocaster that I love it plays so so good and has had a professional setup on it and I love it its my number 1 strat and I only upgrade the pickguard and swap out the bridge for an American bridge with a GFS brass block in it and I love it

I remember my first Squier back in the 70. It was trash. Now I think they’re higher priced trash. Can you say plywood yes for a long time I would get them for repairs and find plywood after removing the neck on the older ones. Though I’ve built guitars from MDF, plywood, strand board and all kinds of other stuff for fun I would never want to buy one that way.

On the subject of plek’d squier vs mexican fender, keep in mind the mexican strat is bound to have a better resale value on the used market than a squier even if the squier has a theoretically perfect setup should you choose to sell the guitar later on.

I've started playing guitar back in 1974 and only started learning to do my own setups 10 years ago. Biggest regret was not learning to set up a guitar sooner. You can see how polished those frets are from a distance, and I think we can agree freshly polished frets are a real treat to play.

What happened to make rhe guitar change color so much? I see you removed the sticker from the pickgaurd but was lighting changed? At first it seems silver but in later shots it look as if it has a blue iridescent quality.

Aren't you being charged extra for something that should've been done in the first place?
@GlennMarshallRocks
@GlennMarshallRocks 3 жыл бұрын
Normally, standard production guitars (i.e. not custom, hand-built guitars) don't have a fret leveling job done on them when new, and they are never PLEK'd when new, ordinarily, so the answer to your question is a definite no. You are not being charged "extra" for something that isn't normally done to begin with.
