Phil, I am just doing the same job on a bench, two chairs and a cast iron table with wood surround. I found the bolts had become balls of rust but was able to salvage 27 out of 31 slats which are hard wood and had been varnished every two years and preserved them but four slats completely rotten. Just doing the tedious job of tarnishing but the good weather helps. Great video.
@uktony15254 жыл бұрын
Varnishing, not tarnishing. Damned predictive text.

Oh yea it is time consuming but like you say it's been dry and warm so that helps a lot. Hope your bench turns out well 👍

Looks brilliant, can you tell me how well the slats are standing up to the weather? I have a similar project, having found a couple of bench ends left out for scrap! I've also a cast iron bench back. Problem is finding decent priced hardwood. I have a stack of pallet wood butI don't want to be replacing the timber every year ;0)

From other videos White Oak suggested. I have done 3 using 5/4 Cedar. Avoiding all the knots. Finished with polyurethane.

what does the center support do?
@PhillWyattProjects Жыл бұрын
I think it just helps to keep the separate wooden pieces spaced at equal distances from each other.

@@PhillWyattProjects I’m about to start one of these and I’ve no Centre brace like in your video. It just has the diagonal ones on the side. Is it essential do you think?
@tahirmahmood63162 жыл бұрын
Hi, is it possible to use any strips as the braces,, I only have the sides, I brought from a car boot for a couple of quid
@PhillWyattProjects2 жыл бұрын
Some thin strips of metal should be fine.

Hello what did you use to spray on rusty bolts ?
@PhillWyattProjects2 жыл бұрын
Maintenance spray. 👍🏻

African Iroko hardwood/Teak is the best option for timber. It's got natural water repellent. As you said also Oak...but oak is astronomical price. I use stainless steel coach bolts/washers and nylock nuts. They're not too expensive from Toolstation 😉👍🏼 Happy renovations
@PhillWyattProjects2 жыл бұрын
Good advice Lee 👍🏻 I would like to get my hands on a bit of Teak or Iroko 👌🏻

Hi mate, probably a probably bit late, but iroko? Where the best-/cheapest place to find that? Just been given a dilapidated but stunning cast iron bench’s and table, like to do a good job.

Where’s your saw from?
@PhillWyattProjects7 ай бұрын
Table saw was from Aldi supermarket and the Mitre saw was from Evolution Power Tools. I no longer use these tools.

Well done! I dont have all the tools you have. So it would be an expensive restoration.
@PhillWyattProjects2 жыл бұрын
Thanks👍🏻 you can do this job with basic tools as long as you can find some lengths of wood the correct thickness.
@maryford96512 жыл бұрын
You don't need a toolshed full of expensive tools. I have done several benches, presently doing this exact same one. I have the timber cut to length at the hardware store or cut it myself with a handsaw or the jigsaw which is also what I used to cut down the width. does not do the job as well as a bandsaw or bench saw but does the job. There is no problem in my neck of the woods getting the 19mm decking timber to use.
@maryford96512 жыл бұрын
What width are the slats?
@PhillWyattProjects2 жыл бұрын
I think between 5-6cm if I remember correctly.

Where do you find all these old items to restore?
@PhillWyattProjects4 жыл бұрын
It's usually stuff that people put out for the trash. I find it when I am driving or when someone tips me off. I recently found an old industrial filing cabinet which I will make a video on soon.
