I TOO, have done the same multiple times... bought 2 benches back in the early 90s and refuse to replace them.... refurbish! ON SECOND COMPLETE REFURB... but they sell slat sets???? never thought to look...keep using pressure treated and or cedar.... mine are trickier though, the top back rail is majorly ARCHED... NOT AN EASY MATCH... TEMPLATE, CUT, SAND.....then the neighbor widow threw in the trash a really beautiful detailed bench, luckily the top back slat was not totally rotten..duped that one too.... BUT DARN THOSE BENCHES CAN BE HEAVY....AND CLUMSY.....

@@daviddura1172 yeah I’ve done some with curved backs and also quite a lot of them have a 10° angle where the wood meets the cast iron. Makes them pretty tricky! Recently refurbed a whole garden set (bench, 2 chairs and a table) was a huge amount of work but very satisfying as the owner had them 40+ years and thought he’d have to say goodbye to them.

Couple years a neighbor set one out to trash. Wood was toast. So I grabbed it, bought some oak (why I didn't choose something else?!) and milled up some new bits. Some new black paint from Ace Hardware and now it sits out front. Looking very good if I say so myself. :D

I did my Uncle's bench with pallet wood. The bench was about 3 inches narrower than it used to be but he is the only one who sits on it and the wood came for free. I rounded the edges on the router table which only took about 15 minutes and sanded it which took to quite a bit longer. I then carefully applied 4 coats of Danish Oil leaving it to dry overnight between coats. I even got some black bolts to match the colour of the cast iron frame. I was quite proud with myself when I handed it over. I can safely say that I was pissed off with him when I saw it next as he had tried to paint the wood white and made a hell of a mess due to the oil. He also splattered spots of white paint onto the iron work that I had rubbed down, primed and reblacked.

the ones with the ARCHED top back slat can be a real bear.... TEMPLATE THE ROTTED PIECES, CUT, TRIM AND SAND INTO SHAPE.... here in Dallas Texas, with 104 degree heat, frog strangling down pours, cold, ice, snow, and hail. Sometimes the same day, LOL, benches take a beating....done 3 different benches multiple times...spent way more than I paid for them back in the 90s...even pulled one out of the neighbor widow's trash...it had incredible wrought iron details BTW..... it gets to be a $tatement of manhood above co$t...LOL OK pride of accomplishment......

We have one of these still in its packing crate and I keep meaning to put it together but seeing what is involved, might just make one out of wood instead which I could assemble in the garden in-situ. I think having to lift such a heavy thing on and off the bench, would mean several trips to my chiropractor to have my spine realigned! but all things considered Peter, jolly well done😂

I'm puzzled as to the purpose of the small hole in each side piece. Are they there to take some sort of truss rod below the seat to connect the side pieces structurally? The way the chair goes together it doesn't seem to need that extra support. Maybe they are just there to allow 2 benches to be bolted together side by side? Answers on a postcard.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s for a (missing) tie-bar, to help prevent racking/add support. But that’s only a guess. 🤷‍♂️👍

@andysweetland8645 2 жыл бұрын
@@10MinuteWorkshop I have a similar cheapo kit bought from the local DIY place. Chinese of course. Only difference appears to be that the cast seat back on mine is some sort of ali. Still "B heavy" though! The was no tie bar in mine, though I added a home brew one. Does help with general rigidity/racking, but still not brilliant (see also separate comment re hardware. AES

A lot of benches have a vaguely 'V' shaped piece of flat iron that bolts to the legs of the ends and the point of the "V" has a bolt or screw that goes into one of the slats. That particular bench as Peter said, looks to be made for a threaded rod from end to end (and a bunch of nuts & washers) which is less common - I've seen actual antique 'Victorian' benches with the end to end rod rather than the modern (cheap & nasty) "V" strap.

As a "general principle" Peter, I really DO hate C/S screws into any flat piece (as you've used into the cast iron back here). Just IMO, but these MUST be round (or cheese) head screws in ALL cases. So that the flat under the head is fully in contact with the metal under the whole area of the head, and NOT just an "angled edge" in contact as is the case with any C/S head screw. Also: I apologise in advance if I missed it in your commentary, but again IMO, all the hardware (screws, bolts, nuts and washers) MUST be stainless. "Normal" bright zinc plated (and other typical hardware store plating) will NOT last long (a couple of years at best) in the always outdoors environment. DAMHIKT!
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
You’re perfectly entitled to your opinions Andrew - and yes the supplied fixing kit is stainless, though they’ll be painted black - but let me be equally honest; if that’s the detail you expect of a freebie from a neighbour, I’m glad you don’t live near me! 😂👍
