Saw this with my parents when it came out. What gets lost to history is Rocky was released December of 1976 and Star Wars May of 1977. Star Wars changed special effects. Rocky the steady came was invented. This is why you get the iconic run up the stairs and you feel your are in the match. Before Rocky cameras were so big they had to be on a vehicle or a rail and trolley setup.

Was not overly excited. I was 16 at the time, and Jaws came out the year before was still the main focus in movies. And the main star of Rocky was some unknown Italian dude who could barely speak, let alone act. I barely remembered him from the pretty bad "Lords of Flatbush" movie. Sort of a B version of "The Outsiders" in Brooklyn. Yes, I know The Outsiders came out after the Lords of Flatbush. Then right away at the start of the movie there is Burgess Meredith, who played a super corny version of "The Penguin" in the old Batman tv show from the 60's and I was like, this is not going to be good. LOL. But boy was I surprised. The movie was actually very good and super entertaining. It pretty much kept my attention until Star Wars came out the next year.

Sylvester Stallone has said many times that Rocky is not a boxing movie, it's a love story with boxing in it. Some cool facts, Sylvester Stallone still has Cuff and Link. Butkus really was his dog. He had to sell Butkus to afford to eat before he was able to sell his script , he only got about $50. After he got his first advance he went back and bought Butkus back and paid about $1500. The leader of the street singers is Sylvester Stallone's real brother, Frank.

Rocky is in my opinion the greatest, most inspirational sports movie ever made. It also features of the greatest love stories ever put on film
@stonecoldku41615 ай бұрын
To help keep costs down Stallone would use some family members in small roles. One of the singers in the group on the corner was Stallone's brother Frank and the man that rang the bell during the Apollo fight was Stallone's father.

For me it was a well earned Oscar for Sylvester Stallone for writing Rocky, because it is a wunderful story of struggling in life and often just needing a chance to proof yourself. I always thought Rocky is more a drama and a love story than just a boxer-movie. The movie is as old as me and kind of an old friend too - I love it to see people discovering it.

Sylvester Stallone has never won an Oscar. While Rocky did win the Best Picture Oscar that year, the BP statue went, and still, does go, to the producers -- which did NOT include Stallone. And yes, I agree that's moronic -- that a film could win the Best Picture award, and not include the writer(s) of the film! Instead, it goes to the producer(s) (who may or may not have contributed creatively to the film).

The inside of the gym where Rocky trains is actually the Main Street gym in downtown Los Angeles. It burned down many years ago, and it is a parking lot now. That sports arena where the fight was, was actually the Los Angeles Sports arena which was right next to the L.A. Coliseum. They tore down that sports arena a few years ago and built a soccer stadium there.

Butkis was actually his dog, he had to give it away while struggling to pay rent while trying to make it in Hollywood. He later bought his dog back after his first movie earned him a livable income. The 2 turtles he kept as well.
@scottdarden30915 ай бұрын
Unfortunately Butkus died before Rocky III could be filmed 😢 but he still has Cuff and Link.
@thewonkyembouchure3 ай бұрын
The turtles were returned to the pet store after the filming of the first movie wrapped. The Philly Inquirer interviewed Joseph Marks in 2017, the former owner of J&M Tropical Fish, who confirmed that he "still owns the turtles, Cuff and Link, that Rocky bought at the fictional Adrian's pet shop in the film" (Article: Owner of razed Kensington pet store recalls when Rocky came calling, published April 21, 2017).

Fun fact... the drunk Rocky picks up is Lloyd Kaufman, future diredtor, producer, cofounder and public face of TROMA Entertainment. They made schlocky movies like The Toxic Avenger (Kaufman directed that in 1984)...which is getting a remake this year with Peter Dinklage.

Rocky Balboa is the greatest movie character of all time. There are 6 Rocky movies and 3 Creed movies. Rocky 1-5 Rocky Balboa(aka Rocky 6) and the three Creed movies. Each movie is a part of a singular picture. You can never see the whole picture if you don’t watch all the movies.

My dad took me to see this movie when I was a kid, but I didn't fully appreciate it until some time later. Rocky 3 is definitely my favorite from the franchise and the one I've seen the most for some reason. It probably got played a bunch on cable (HBO) , or maybe one of my friends had it on VHS back in the 80's. I forget after all these years. I hope you get a chance to react to it.

I liked, subscribed, and rang the bell for your entire Rocky journey so I certainly hope you react to all 6 Rocky movies. I think you will really like them. $17.20 is about $95 today. Carl Weathers, who played Apollo just died last year. Apollo is basically acting like Muhammad Ali did during his career.. This is the rare franchise were you can say at least the first 4 Rockies are worth watching. Then the continuation movies that came out starting 5-10 years ago are not bad either.
@FreddyKurganNimmo5 ай бұрын
All 9 movies in the franchise are worth watching. It's just that, in many people's opinions, Rocky V is the franchise low-point, and isn't worth repeated viewings. Most people who have watched the 6th film, Rocky Balboa, agree that it is one of the better films of the franchise. And, given time away from the initial poor opinion of Rocky V, that Rocky Balboa actually makes Rocky V a bit(if even *just* a bit) more tolerable on a repeat viewing(knowing now that it's *not* the closing chapter).
@boki16935 ай бұрын
@@FreddyKurganNimmo I said the first 4 because for some odd reason, I can never even remember Rocky 5. So, I can't even say if I liked it or not. And the only other one I saw was Creed. Which I liked but not as good as the Rocky's I saw and remembered.

RIP to the great Carl Weathers, Apollo Creed! Some Rocky facts! Pauly was only 34-35 when he started rocky, so he was only like 5 years older than Stallone! when he started this series U really should watch any documentary on how this got made!! Broke, almost homeless, sold his dog...for real!😮...wrote the script in 3 weeks. Was asked big money(back then) to sell it, but not star in it. He always said no. Finally sold it for 30k to ABC TV. He was good friends with and done a movie a few years prior, with Henry Winkler. He became THE STAR of😊 abc tv in the show Happy Days, as the Fonz. He heard Stallone sold the script to ABC. Henry goes to the ABC heads and says, u don't GIVE me that script, I leave the show....they gave it to him! Stallone never made a ton of money on the rockymovies. Only as a writer actor choreographer. He got ripped off by the first producer, who bought the rights and rocky name, and never sold it back to Stallone, though he's made billions! Based on a real tune up fight, for Ali. He was going to fight Frazier later in the year, for the title, but he wanted a tune-up fight. He fought against Chuck Wepner, a journeyman tomato can bleeder, who was good, but never top 10 ranked. And he damn near knocked Ali out!😮 The guy singing outside, is his real brother Frank!😮 The first guy he fights in this movie, Spider, shows up in Rocky Balboa or Creed! The teenage girl he talks to, also comes back in one of those movies! Adrian is the sister in godfather!😮😮😮😮 Gazzo, his boss, also in godfather 1-2! Stallone almost died in 4, because Drago, actually cracked his ribs, puntured a lung, punctured his heart sac! Drago in real life, has multiple masters PhD in engineering! The blonde wife of Drago, shows up in Creed 2 and so does Drago, and Stallone actually married that woman, and had beautiful daughters with her! Tommy Morrison in part 5 was a real boxer and could have been the greatest ever, but drugs and booze got him. In 3 Clubber got the role, by winning a Tough man contest! In 3 hulk Hogan, hit Stallone for real in the back of his shoulders with his forearm, and moved vertebrae. Dennis Quaid did a amateur tough guy boxing movie, kind of based on the Clubber Lang actor, that was very good, called Tough Enough! and busted his lip open! There was never going to be a 2, but this movie made so much money, win Oscars, etc., Stallone wrote a sequel! When he was accepting an Oscar for this movie on stage, Ali comes up, grabs him, fakes punches at him and says, "u stole this movie idea from me!" Paulie has done a couple other great movies, Rob the Mob, and Pope of Greenich Village! Adrian is part of the Coppola family.... Francis Ford, Nick Cage, Sophia Coppola... maybe her daughter! What 1 and 2 are really, the ultimate love story! U can go see the Rocky statue in Philly! The mistake of colors he's wearing, in the auditorium, was due to a mistake and money problems, so they kept it in, and had the dialogue reflect this! Watch all but u can skip 5, finish the Rocky series, then go to Creed! The Great fight ever... middleweight Ray...boom boom Mancini vs Duk ku Kim,... outdoors, Caesars palace. Outdoors. Went the distance. Slug fest. Kim died in the ring. He fought the last round with a busted blood vessel in his brain. Fights went to twelve after that. Cinderella Man is a great True story movie about a depression Era boxer!

couple facts, the dog in the movie is rocky's dog in real life, he sold the dog, because he was broke and could not afford to feed him, while trying to sell the rocky script, sly would not sell, even being offered lots of money, he would only sell if he played rocky, once sly got the money, he bough his dog back, the guy that rings the bell, in the rounds, is sly's father

It's hard to explain, but at that time, women tended to feel slighted if you didn't at least hint at having an interest in something more than hand holding and a kiss goodbye when the date was over. Based on Adrian's initial response, Rocky was well without the bounds at that time when he repeated the invitation. (Rocky would have read her eyes before he repeated the invitation.)
