Losing him and Burt in such a short span was rough. Met Burt by chance at a Las Vegas buffet about 20 years ago. He invited me to sit with him. One of the sweetest guys I've ever met. Everybody made the most of their second chances, but when Paulie wanted one too, he was told he wasn't good enough. Lost in Paulie's demeanor, is the fact he never asked Rocky for a loan, he supported his sister financially, offered Rocky a loan and bought his car when he needed money. I love that you've done this! In defence of "Rocky Balboa", Mason's not really the opponent. The real opponent is "the stuff in the basement", the pain he feels for having lost Adrian. The whole point of the match was proving to himself that he could still go for it, that he wasn't just going to give up on life. Dixon just gave him the excuse to do that.
@thewolfofwallstreet627Ай бұрын
Not to mention the fact that what seperates Mason Dixon from previous rocky antagonists is that Mason isn't really an antagonist. He's just filling in that role because he happens to be fighting rocky. And, he's given his own mini arc that does get resolved as well because it was established early on that for all of his accolades, he was unfortunate enough to enter an era of boxing where he had no one who could really challenge him. He was a victim of his own dominance as one character put it. But when he found his real challenge in an unexpected place fighting a past his prime Rocky, it forced Mason to dig deep to try to prove to himself that he deserved to be champion, and Rocky even approving him was the icing on the cake, as they both won in their own ways in Rocky Balboa if you think about it.
@ToniMcGintyАй бұрын
@@thewolfofwallstreet627 That is absolutely true, although I would also argue that Apollo was never really an antagonist. Clubber, Drago and Tommy, on the other hand...

It's much sadder when you realize half cast rocky franchise is no longer here with us Carl Weathers, Sage Stallone (Robert), Pedro Lovell (Spider), Burgess Meredith (Mickey), Tony Burton (Duke), Burt Young (Paulie), James Brown, and Tommy Morrison (Tommy Gunn) My favorite Paulie moments from Rocky franchise are from Rocky 4 before Rocky goes to fight Drago he tells Rocky how much he loves his brother in law and how much he truly means to him if you look at Adriana reaction you can see it goes from shock, surprised, nd emotional seeing her brother finally show genuine emotion for someone he loves and cares. You can tell she wasn't expecting Paulie to say something like that and it's underrated moment that doesn't get talked about alot. My other favorite Paulie moment is a deleted scene from Rocky Baloba after he is left go from his job he breaks down in front of Rocky telling him how much he misses his sister and him saying that he should have died instead of her you can see Rocky reaction trying to stay strong but at same time you can also see he's in alot pain but feels even more sad his best friend saying he should have died instead of Adriana it's crime this was deleted from the movie should have been kept in.

Great Reaction.... RIP Carl Weathers (Apollo) and Burt Young (Paulie)..... The "Rocky" Movies are movies about Relationships and Personal Growth, with a little Boxing thrown in...... Actually Butkis was his dog, he had sold the dog before the movie and bought it back when he got the movie deal....... The scene where Rocky points out the shorts are the wrong color, was added cause the printer messed up the poster/prop and they didn't have enough money left in the budget to correct it, Same thing with Rocky's robe being the wrong size..... So they wrote in dialogue to address it..... Adrian is Rocky's Heart and Motovation..... He is powerless without her approval..... Apollo is a First Class Opponent, If you notice at the end of the fight in Rocky 2, Apollo raises Rocky's Hand/Arm, and Congradulates Rocky.... Rocky III, Mr T took his mom to the premier and she gave him a hard time saying "I raised you better than that".... We all had our hearts ripped out when Apollo Died, Almost as much as When Mickey Passed..... I have heard it said that Carl was mimicking the "Death twitch" so well that the on scene doctor (Who was playing the Fight Doctor) was concerned until he examined Him....... In "Normal" competition there is drug testing..... With these being an "Exhibition" fights, the regular rules/Procedures were not followed.... During the Fight Drago says Rocky is a Machine..... The actor playing Tommy Gunn was a Real Fighter at the time this was filmed..... The speech Rocky gives to his son is one of the greatest speeches ever. The speech between Rocky and his son outside the restaurant stands out as one of the epic speeches of modern cinema. I read in a interview where Talia Shire agreed with the idea of Adrian passed away before this movie happens.... She said that (summarized) "It would make no sense for Rocky to fight if Adrian was alive" and when asked if she felt bad about being left out of the movie, she replied "The whole movie is about Adrian" The cameo by Mike Tyson was actually supposed to be Mr. T's Clubber Lang as a commentator on the fight. Unfortunately Mr. T was doing some reality show at the same time.
